May 26, 2014 - Carolina Beach, NC Preparations for 2014

We spent most if our winter helping with ailing family and friends. Many trips to NYC to move John's aunt from her apartment to assisted living, hospitals with a stroke and influenza, and now, having to make decisions on end of life possibilities and another move to a permanent nursing home. Also, we lost a close friend to cancer and only recently to discover that his wife also has cancer. Another friend lost her mother, and we could go on, but we ask for many prayers for so many who are ill and have gone to be with God. We decided that we...

Dec 15, 2013 - Winter Plans

Well, our boating plans for the Fall did not materialize due to family illness and death of a close friend who also was a long range boater like us. JR has been doing well by herself, but she is getting mad at us for not getting her buffed out. We tried one outfit only to be told that their rates were nearly twice what we aer used to pay. Granted, they are top notch, but..... So, another outfit in WIlmington was pushing hard to get new business - energetic, nice young men - so we gave them a shot to just buff the hull and we were going to...

Oct 24, 2013 - Short day to Carolina Beach, NC

Today was a short day of motoring to Carolina Beach, near Snow’s Cut and the Cape Fear River. Each day we check the times of high and low tide at all of the fixed bridges we will encounter during the day (our GPS has displays of tides in the locales). We knew we were going to get to the bridge in Snow’s Cut at close to high tide when we would probably not be able to get under the bridge. Before anchoring, we motored up to the high-rise bridge in Snow’s Cut to check the water level, on the off chance we could get under it. The tide was high;...

Oct 24, 2013 - Carolina Beach State Park

Celebrating my birthday along the Carolina coast was a first time experience. Moving to Carolina Beach, just north of Wilmington, I was parked under 60 foot longleaf pines and spent two sunny days hiking the six miles of wide sandy trails along the water, by marsh and through the woods. The park is on the Cape Fear River and intercoastal waterway What I didn't expect was the first cold snap which dropped temperatures down to the thirties one night. I kept the slides in to better insulate and preserve heat as this park does not offer...

Jul 10, 2013 - TRIP COMPLETE: Mt. Pleasant, SC to Carolina Beach, NC

This is the last entry for our trip of 3/1/13 thru today to the Bahamas. It is with some sadness we finished this trip, but will have some of the best memories of any trip to carry us. 7/3, we leave for Georgetown, SC where we love stopping at the Boat Shed that is easy walk to town. Since slack tide is at 0515, and we are told that the current can play games with our single screw boat in the marina, we decide to leave at slack tide since there is also some wind on our beam. 2nd mate Jeremy sleeps thru the whole thing - how he can sleep...

Nov 3, 2012 - Carolina, Kure, & Wrightsville Beaches

VERY enjoyable day spent visiting Carolina, Kure, & Wrightsville Beaches in NC. A stop at the Dollar Tree and Taco Bell also. Back to the nice campground and for a bike ride. Slight problems with computer coming on, so keeping my fingers crossed. Spoke with Caroline and she is in COLD Maryland. Poor Baby :-(

Jul 3, 2012 - Carolina Beach Fireworks

Again this year, we planned a beach day followed by fireworks in the Wilmington area to celebrate 4th of July. This year, we headed down a day early to squeeze in a little more beach time. I worked a half-day on Tuesday and left around lunch time for the drive down to Carolina Beach. We had some fast food for a quick dinner then headed to Carolina Beach State Park to set up camp. The group campsites here are a short, maybe 400-meter walk from the parking lot to the sites just off the Swamp Trail. Along the way, we spotted a pitcher plant,...

Dec 1, 2010 - Carolina Beach, North Carolina

12/1 – 12/7 It took us four days to travel 714 miles from Lebanon, Ohio to Carolina Beach, North Carolina (I-71, US35, I-64, US60, I-64, US220, I-40, SR132, US421). We just made it out of Ohio before the serious winter weather arrived. In fact, on our first driving day it was snowing most of the time – luckily not settling on the highway. The first night we spent in a Wal-Mart lot in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The drive through the snow was quite beautiful along US60. The next night we stopped at a Wal-Mart in Burlington, North Carolina...

Jul 5, 2009 - Carolina Beach

Sunday July 5th Carolina Beach State Park, located on the Atlantic Ocean, a peninsula. We took 17 north and then 211 east and a small free ferry from Southport to Fort Fisher, Cape Fear. Southport is a small village somewhat like Gig Harbor. There are a lot of small villages like that around here in Carolina. Carolina Beach is beautiful. The weather is cooling a bit as we head north and so is the water. The state park was nice, and empty after the 4th week end. No power, but the price was right at $10.00 for seniors. We are low on propane...

Nov 11, 2008 - Carolina Beach, NC

Carolina Beach is a touristy/busy little town near the town of Wilmington, NC. Sorry no pictures of this place. The park was pretty nice - next to a canal "the Intracoastal waterway" It's kind of like a boater's passage all the way up the East Coast without having to ever enter the Atlantic Ocean. Seems as though it's mostly recreational boaters who use this waterway. We're amazed at the numbers of recreational boating here. There's all sorts of rivers, bays, canals - all kinds of connected waterways for boating. It's neat! We found a...

May 6, 2008 - the Great Pee Dee

And crossing the state line too - Tuesday, May 6, 2008 We woke to a gray, overcast day. We said goodbye to Dave and Lucien, and since they are also headed for Canada we exchanged numbers. Very nice people. He and I both look like old California hippies. But he was president of a small private college, while I - well - never mind. We got back on Highway 17 north. It’s nice open four lane road with little traffic, and for the first forty miles we didn’t pass many towns. Then we came to Georgetown on Winyah Bay. Winyah Bay is the outlet of the...

Nov 22, 2007 - Happy Thanksgiving We're in Carolina Beach NC!

Happy Thanksgiving! We left Mile Hammock Bay, Camp LeJeune, NC today and are headed for Carolina Beach, NC to see our friends Keith and Kathy which is one of the highlights of our trip. They have a home directly off the ICW and we can dock our boat at their back door! Luckily this time we are docking at their home which has deep water and not the other dock where we ran aground last year! Carolina Beach is a lovely area. There is so much to do and it's a huge boating community. An update: We traveled from Norfolk VA to Coinjock NC to Dowry...
