European settlement near the Pamlico River, of French Protestants coming from Virginia in the 1690's, resulted in the creation of NC's first town, which was named Bath in 1705. As early as 1701, the area was known as St. Thomas Parish, and had a public library sent from England. By 1707 , there was a gristmill and a ship yard and a year later, 12 houses. In the early 1700's, Blackbeard threatened merchant ships off the NC and VA coasts, and by June 1718 he came to live in Bath, having been given a "royal pardon" by the British Governor...
