Oct 16, 2015 - Outer Banks!

It was a 4.5 hour drive from Gloucester to Avon, but I dragged it out to 7! I got my first ticket in years because a cop saw me go through a red light. It turned yellow when I was very close to it and I made the decision to go because I knew I wouldn't be able to stop in time. It happens once in a while and I usually blow my horn while going through the light. It will cost me $50 for the offense, but another $188 for court costs even if I don't go to court! And I have to get a certified check or money order - they won't take personal...

Nov 2, 2014 - Nor'easter Survival skills

Spike, Zoey, and I have survived our first Nor'easter storm here in North Carolina! We were feeling pretty vulnerable last night on the Outer banks with water on either side of us. It rained and was pretty windy all night. We had to put the "slide outs" in, as the wind was buffeting us pretty hard. The winds were 35 mph with gusts to 50mph. Miss Zoey could not figure out why the RV kept moving and making noise. She kept looking at me like I was doing it on purpose, disturbing her sleep. And of course we wished it would stop moving and...

Heading to the East!

Nov 1, 2014 - The Nor'easter has begun....

As I write this tonight the Rv is rocking due to the gusty winds. Hard to believe how fast the weather can change. This morning @ 0700 there was no wind and it was sunny when I took Miss Zoey out. We went out to the beach today, to walk and watch the storm coming in. Zoey thoroughly enjoyed herself, digging and chasing the sand pipers. She was afraid of the waves though. She ran from them if they got to close to her. The sand and the dunes are very different from home. I included a few photos so you could see.

Heading to the East!

Oct 31, 2014 - Outer banks of NC

Today we went under the Chesapeake Bay and didn't even get wet! We took an underground tunnel to go underneath it. When we came out of the tunnel we were able to see the Newport News Shipyard on our right, and see them building the aircraft carrier, George Bush, in their largest dry dock. Spike and I had both been to this shipyard in our careers, so it was cool to reminisce! We drove down beautiful treed parkways this morning for the last time, as we said good bye to Virginia. Thankfully no rain this morning but it was kinda chilly & damp....

Heading to the East!

Aug 21, 2014 - Asheville, NC

So the beach appeared in the rear view mirror and we headed west. We stopped for 1 night at Falls Lake Recreation Area, which is north of Raleigh, NC. The campground was okay – perhaps they will tidy up in the fall. We did visit the lake and that was very nice. They had a swimming beach and families seemed to be enjoying all manner of water activities. I should mention that a new “warning” for us at the parks gives me some pause. The bulletin boards usually have some notice similar to “Our insurance company has advised us to tell you that...

Aug 16, 2014 - The Outer Banks and FAMILY

We did make it to the beach. The gathering was in Avon, NC on Hatteras Island. 39 of us (3 generations) were there and we occupied 3 houses. The houses are all 4 levels with the ground level being the “garage and pray the water doesn’t go too high stilts”. Bedrooms were on the 2nd and 3rd levels and living/family areas were on the 4th level. There were no elevators and 2 of the houses had very steep stairs. Thankfully our house had multiple landings on the stairs and they were not as steep from stair to stair. The stairs will not be missed...

May 2, 2013 - iAvon, North Carolina

We left this morning about 9:45, we were told if we got to the beltway (495) around DC around 10:00 we wouldn't have to much traffic to deal with. On our way to Hwy 270, while we were still in town, we missed our turn and ended up in a culdesac, well we couldn't make the circle, so we had to unhook the car and get through it and hook back up. This fortunately was are only excitement during the trip. The beltway wasn't busy, I95 south wasn't too bad and before you know it we were close to the ocean around Virgina Beach. Near here is where we...

Oct 15, 2012 - First in flight

We woke to a beautiful morning and walked a mile to Church then packed up for a day of sightseeing. First up was the site of Orville and Wilbur Wright's first flight at Kitty Hawk. There was an interesting display at the visitor center and then walking the grounds where markers showed the landing spot of all four successful flights that December day in 1903. We also enjoyed the professional kite flying competition that was going on. Outside of the roped off area for the pros many people were flying kites on a perfect day for that activity....

We spent last night in Wilson, NC...arriving on the Outer Banks this afternoon. It's much cooler than Florida! Windy but the sea air smells so good! We are staying at a really nice pink campground, "Times of Sand" in Avon...can't wait to take a pic of the welcome center. Driving from Wilson to here took about 4 hours, with many great pics, including too many turtles to count. More tomorrow.... Today, we drove to the ferry for Ocracoke Island. The ferry is free, a forty minute ride with car...a fun trip. We drove off the ferry, 13 miles to...
