Aug 9, 2009 - Weekend at the lake house with family

Friday started a fun weekend at Jay's brother's house. Elliot and Debbie have a lake house on Lake Cayuga, also one of the Finger Lakes in the area. It's a beautiful lake cottage with a great dock and yard made to look even more beautiful with Debbie's flower plantings. The cottage is right on the lake, but the road is up above, which means a 58 step climb down to the house and an even more steep 58 step climb back up to the road. The weekend was filled with off and on thunderstorms, some of which were really beautiful and some very loud,...

Aug 6, 2009 - Lake Ontario

TOday we drove about 90 minutes north to visit some San Diego friends, Cyndy and Manfred, who moved to this area to retire. They have a beautiful cottage year round home on Little Sodus Bay which is part of Lake Ontario. What a peaceful piece of the world. We went out to lunch in Fair Haven, but Cyndy was moving a bit slow, as she had an infection under her toe nail and had to have the nail removed the previous day. UGH! As you'll see in the picture, the bandage made it look worse than it was. Lunch was great and we came back to their house...

Aug 5, 2009 - Exploring the Finger Lakes area of NY

Today we took our time getting out, since the drive yesterday was long and tiring. We were supposed to have morning thunderstorms, but they never appeared, so we decided to head out to play golf at Bonavista State Golf Course which is close to where we're staying. It was an absolutly beautiful course, but you'll need to take my word for it, as I forgot the flash card for my camera in my laptop so... no pictues. Jay and I played pretty well, which surprised us since we haven't played since Indiana. So we enjoyed the morning. After going back...

Aug 4, 2009 - Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes of NY State

We woke up early since they were cleaning the parking lot in our campground…. Wal-Mart. Luckily, the store was close, so I ran over for some last minute supplies and then Jay and I went to breakfast at Punxy Phil’s. Then we headed out of town, waiving good-bye to the many Phil’s in town with a 5 hour drive to the Finger Lakes area of NY state. Our drive was really beautiful through many scenic areas of Pennsylvania and NY. The tough part was negotiating some of the small town roads that were built many, many years ago before 40 foot motor...

Jul 10, 2009 - Schenectady to Romulus, NY

As Day 21, we are almost halfway through our Great American Road Trip. Yesterday, in Pittsfield, Mass., we made our turn west, and have been following Highway 20, which is our route for most of the way home. Today’s drive from Schenectady, N.Y., to the Finger Lakes region was a lovely but lumpy roller coaster ride over hills and into expansive valleys. There were lots of white houses, red barns and beautiful lakes. The weather has been great. We haven’t hit too much humidity or heat in the East. We drove all morning and stopped in early...

Jun 22, 2007 - Finger Lakes, NY

Been in the finger lakes region enjoying the fishing, the scenery and of course the wine trail!! There are lots of gorges and waterfalls around here. We really didn't find out until later so we only went to few, but man were they magnificent. The Finger Lakes we visited (Cayuga and Seneca) are the largest of the five in the region. It is hard to believe that a lake 2 miles across and 38 miles long can be over 500 feet deep! Unfortunately, they are like little seas and we had a rough go with the kayaks. I did manage to catch my first Pike...
