Jul 24, 2013 - DUCK!!
July 24, 2013, Wednesday Just what is it about our truck that attracts birds...ducks in particular?? Guess you've all remember the big Quacker that nailed our headlight in Alaska a few years ago. Well, they seem to be after us again this year. Last week we had a Dove fly into the passenger door. Lucky for us he only left a few feathers there....not so lucky for the dove though. Then Monday a duck flew up out of the bushes by the side of the road and we couldn't avoid hitting him. We thought for sure we had a new hood ornament but there was...Jump to full entry
Jul 29, 2012 - Another reason for a party!
Since I last wrote we have moved from Maine through New Hampshire and into Vermont where we stayed one night near Killington. Had a bit of rain and fog there, then we moved into the Adirondack Park in New York and spent two nights on Lake Piseco, the sweet little lake where I spent so much time as a kid. The first evening there, while sitting on a bench overlooking the beautiful scenery, some fellow campers came up and asked if we’d been sitting there long. “Only about ten minutes,” we replied, and then they showed us a picture of the BEAR...Jump to full entry
Oct 18, 2011 - Fort Stanwix, NY
Back on the road and we head over to Fort Stanwix. The fort is located in downtown Rome, New York. In the early 1980's no one was aware of the fort, it was buried under a city block of buildings, but as the buildings came down and archeologist started digging the bones of the fort were unearthed. The fort has now been reconstructed and is open to the public. This fort was significant in the Revolutionary War against the British and the local Indians.Jump to full entry
Sep 12, 2011 - Do we have to leave?
We've been in Central NY about a week now. There was another tropical storm last Wednesday and the area was badly flooded. Even worse was the southern tier of NY, near Binghamton - the area we need to go through to get to PA. So, we're camping in the driveway of my childhood friend, Bobbie, and loving every minute of it. She and I took a ride Saturday to go to the nearby Amish store, and on the way saw some terrible signs of the flooding....one entire street of homes all had huge piles of household goods waiting for the trash truck. What an...Jump to full entry
Aug 29, 2011 - Goodbye Irene!!!
It’s hard to believe, but we left Florida hoping to escape the summer hurricane scares only to have the blasted thing come up to New York State!! What’s that about?? We were having such a great time in the NYS campground in Piseco when the ranger informed everyone that all state campgrounds were being closed on Saturday at noon due to Hurricane Irene. So, we were at a loss for awhile as to where to go as the campground in Verona was totally full for the weekend. Thankfully we were able to fit into the driveway of my friend, Bobbie, and...Jump to full entry
Jun 6, 2009 - Erie Canal
Minhee and myself went down to Rome, New York and took a 20 mile bike ride along the Erie Canal. The Erie canal, opened in 1828, runs between Albany and Buffalo. The canal opened up an all water route from New York City all the way to the western Great Lakes. The Erie Canal created a cheap trade route that allowed farmers west of the Appalachians and along the Great Lakes ship their produce to New York City and thus the world. It also helped drive the industrial revolution to upstate New York. Mills and factories in the 1800's required...Jump to full entry
Jul 10, 2008 - Rome, NY
We left Saugerties and drove about 3 hours to Verona, NY which is just outside of Rome, NY which is where Frank was stationed several years ago. We got there early enough in the day that once we got the RV set up we took a drive into Rome. We stopped to see Ft. Stanwix which is a fort from the revolutionary war era. It is a replica of the original, but looked pretty authentic. Then we drove out to the house that Frank lived in when they lived here. It was pretty much the way he remembered it, but it had been painted a different color. We...Jump to full entry
Jul 16, 2007 - The Villages RV Park at Verona NY and the Andriondacks
After Niagara Falls, we traveled to Rome NY to see my brothers house. (The trip was planned to visit my brother, but he had since moved back to Indy) We stayed at The Villages RV resort, part of the Turning Stone Casino resort. It was nice, wasn't there much too much running around. We went to Cooperstown to visit the Baseball hall of Fame, then daytripped through the Adriondacks. It would have been a nice trip if we had had more time. I did get alot of pictures.Jump to full entry
