Sep 27, 2018 - Rhinebeck, NY

Sunshine this morning and temps in the 60’s. A nice fall day. Today we are going to the FDR Home and Presidential Library and the Vanderbilt Mansion which were closed due to government shutdown in 2013 when we were last in Hyde Park. We had an 11:00 hour tour with a Ranger who was a real hoot! Franklin’s father, James, bought the 110-acre property in 1867 for $40,000. It included a house and working farm overlooking the Hudson River. Franklin ultimately expanded the holdings to nearly 1,500 acres and planted over 500,000 trees now run by...

Sep 26, 2018 - Lenox, MA to Rhinebeck, NY

We had dinner at the Sloane Tavern, Cranwell Spa and Golf Resort. The dinner was not very special (Bob had a hot dog and I had a vegetable fritto misto) but the place was very interesting. In the early 1900’s Lenox became known as the “Inland Newport” where millionaires spent summers including John Sloane of W & J Sloane (relative of the Vanderbilts) . In 1893 he bought the Tudor-style cottage (cottage defined as a secondary residence with a minimum of 30 rooms and 20 acres) for $50,000. Frederick Olmstead (landscape architect of Central...

Aug 21, 2018 - Cruising the Hudson

While our time in Rhinebeck NY has been pretty rainy, we did get out to take a cruise on the Hudson River. Interesting history lessons and scenery. Rich peoples homes, bald eagle, sailing, and lighthouses. Had a good dinner back in Rhinebeck to cap off the day (Old church converted to a restaurant)

Jun 7, 2014 - Country Living Fair

We worked this morning in the campground office until noon and it was pretty quiet until the last hour or so. Then we took off to see the town of Rhinebeck. However, the town was just full of people. The Country Living Fair (like the magazine) was at the Fairgrounds and the excess of people were all over town and there wasn't a place to park. That is why our campground was full too. We decided to see what all the hubbub was about so we headed to the Fairground. The place was jammed with people so we had to walk quite a distance to get to...

Jun 2, 2014 - Our Home For This Summer Season - Interlake RV Park

We arrived at Interlake RV Park one day ahead of schedule. We took a few pictures of the campground. It is really nice and we think we will enjoy being here. The office where we will be working is on the side next to the little red shed where the fire wood and other things are stored. This used to be an Inn and we need to get a picture of the front of it because it looks really nice from the road. They rent out one studio apartment and one larger apartment on the first level. Then there are two apartments on the top level where some...

Sep 27, 2011 - Ramblings

I want to send a hello to our Tiki neighbors/friends; we loved the message you left us last week on my cell phone. It sounded like you were having one of those famous impromptu gatherings that our street is famous for. Sounded like you were having a fun evening; sorry we missed it, but thanks for thinking of us! We left Lockport/Niagara area Monday morning and drove most of the day, about 250 miles through Syracuse and Albany, NY, passing acres and acres of cabbage, sweet corn and more pumpkins as well as apple orchards. As far as the eye...

Jul 31, 2011 - a very cultural day

Mom and I had tickets to go see Godspell at the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center. I just remember the song "Day by Day" from it but was ready for a good musical about the life of Jesus Christ. Well, it was a musical alright, but not what I expected. They seemed to make fun of the parables, but at least they told the parables correctly. We weren't impressed and left at the intermission! We drove south a bit and stopped at the Mills Mansion, a NYS Historic Site, and then the Vanderbilt Estate, a National Historic Site. Mom and Dad used to...
