Oct 15, 2015 - Plattekill NY

The forecast for Tuesday was OK in the morning, but iffy in the afternoon but by the time we left the house – and it was pretty early for us – it had already started to cloud up so we hit up Cracker Barrel for some breakfast in order to make our next decision on full stomachs...can't make good decisions on an empty stomach. After breakfast, stops at the Post Office, Verizon and Target, we were off to our next and final stop for the day, the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, the home of the FDR house and Presidential Library. The...

Aug 29, 2015 - getting ripped off

Generally, we enjoy planning our travel. We have lots on our bucket list and definite ideas about how we want to spend our time. It's fun researching and making decisions that will leave us happy and fulfilled. On the caravan we often had no idea what we were doing or where we were going. We followed a turn by turn trip log that found us pulling into campgrounds we had not chosen. We trusted that the caravan company had chosen the best available. We radio'ed the wagon master and he talked us into each campsite. Often we would forget the...

Sep 30, 2013 - Days 22-23

Yesterday: one day, five states. That's a lot easier to do in this part of the country. We went from New Hampshire through Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and finally lower New York state. We are in a KOA campground that is apparently only a hop, skip, and a jump from New York City, but you'd never know it from the terrain here. The campground is a bit of a drive into the country but well worth it. It's as wooded and secluded and pretty as we wish we could find in Colorado. After a long day, we decided to stay an extra day. Monday, we...

Sep 13, 2012 - Yale and the Hudson River

Left Mystic, CT today and drove to Plattekill, New York. On the way we stopped in New Haven, CT to see Yale University. We did not take a tour but we did drive around and look at all the granite campus buildings, very attractive. Decided we would also go to Louis’ Lunch where the first hamburger was made. I don’t know what happened. We had the correct address in the GPS but we never did see it on Crown Street. Oh well. We drove on to Plattekill, NY and enjoyed views of the beautiful Hudson River on the way. The KOA campground was forested...

May 2, 2011 - Plattekill, NY (May 2-5, 2011)

And, we're closer to home. Spending a few days in Plattekill, NY, in the Mid-Hudson Valley area. Why not stop and explore an area we've not spent much time in? So, here we be for a few days. Just because... it is in Newburgh, NY, very near where we are. OCC: Orange County Choppers -- the TV show where they customize motorcycles - the big hogs. The series is also filmed here; we watched a few guys messing around in the shop, but no filming was happening. Pete had watched part of the show the night before and we saw the bike they were...

Sep 25, 2010 - OCC

Pretty much the only thing we had on the agenda for today, other then a stop at Dunkin' Donuts, they'll never take over from Tim's, was to grab some groceries and sit around and do nothing. On the way to the local grocery store we just happened to drive right by Orange County Choppers, the home of Paul Sr. and Mikey. We stopped to do a quick tour of the showroom, a majority of the theme bikes they have built over the last few years, including the POW-MIA and the Firefighters bike are on display. After checking out a lot of the t-shirts and...

Sep 24, 2010 - 4 States In One Day

About 5 hours,342 KM's, and 4 states after pulling out of the Middleboro KOA we arrived at the Newburgh / New York North KOA in Plattekill, New York. Obviously two of the states were Massachusetts and New York, throw Rhode Island and Connecticut in the middle. We pretty much drove straight through Providence, R.I. with no stops but because of misreading the GPS we ended up taking a brief tour of downtown Hartford. Other then that the trip over was pretty uneventful, some nice country side, quaint little towns, and a lot of traffic when we...

Aug 30, 2010 - Lunch and a Tour of CIA; Tour of Vanderbilt Mansion

August 30 – Lunch and Tour at CIA; Visit to Vanderbilt Mansion Another beautiful day in the Hudson River Valley. We made 15 pounds of dog food before heading for the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. We lunched at the CIA Apple Pie Bakery Café. I had a roasted turkey, Gruyere cheese, cucumbers and chipotle mayonnaise on a brioche bun. Kathleen had a grilled chicken pressed sandwich served on a herb & garlic foccacia with sautéed broccoli rabe, feta cheese & basil-pine nut pesto. Yummmm. It gets better. I had a really great,...

Aug 29, 2010 - Visit to Homes of the Roosevelts in Hyde Park

August 29 – Visit to Homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt in Hyde Park, NY It was a beautiful day in the Hudson River Valley. A perfect day for visiting the homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt across the river from our KOA campground. We took a ranger-lead, one-hour tour through both homes – Mr. Roosevelt’s home was huge, dark and formal inside and the other, Mrs. Roosevelt’s, small, light and informal. Franklin’s mother Sara controlled the home of Franklin where he grew up. Sara was referred to as the...

Jun 22, 2010 - KOA Newburgh/New York City

The big decision today was whether to stay one more night at KOA or move on. We were all kind of tired from yesterday so we decided to stay just one more night. So today we went over to Poughkeepsie, NY to the State Park - Walkover the Hudson. This state park just opened to 2009 and is 1.28 miles walk across the Hudson River. This walkway is a restored railway. We were lucky today because it was cloudy all day so not that hot. The view of the river was great, but it did rain on us just a little on our walk back. Back at the campground we...

Jun 21, 2010 - New York City

Today we are taking a tour to New York City, the Manhattan area, from the campground. We had to get up early as they served us a continental breakfast at 6:45am and then we left on the tour at 7:30am. It took us till 9:30am before we got to the city traveling on I-87 to 17 to I-80 thru the Lincoln Tunnel which goes under the Hudson River. Our tour guide advised us on the New York slang and that is to say “Yo” if you agree on something. So now we are all talking New York slang. The first stop was Battery Park where our tour guide had to...

Jun 20, 2010 - KOA Newburgh/New York City

First thing this morning we checked on our power issue. Bo went to the office and told them our problem and they sent their tech over to our site. They looked at it and said they could do nothing until Monday and for us to check at the office about moving to another site. They had us move to site# 21. What a pain but it did take care of our problem. We can now use our air conditioner and hot water heater at the same time. Low voltage at the other site was the problem. Our surge protector detected the problem. We are so Thankful that we have...
