Aug 28, 2016 - Aug 26 Rest Day in Old Forge

Aug 26 - Zero miles on the bike today as we rested and had a fun day in Old Forge. Woke up in the morning as excited as any kid would be knowing we get to ride the train today!! ( well, let's say I was excited!!). Old Forge is small enough that we could enjoy the morning and walk to the train station. Arrived a little early so we spent a relaxing hour on the deck of the Van Auken Hotel across the street. I found this to be quite an amazing fact. The gorgeous two story building with wide deck and pillars was built in about 1876 and in 1906,...

Aug 25, 2016 - Aug 25 Boonville to Old Forge (26.65 miles)

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!! And here is why I say that . . . The day started a bit frustrating with the threat of rain hanging over our heads first thing this morning instead of later in the day as predicted yesterday. We thought we could make a short day of it and get to the next destination before the rain set in. It is always a chance you take, do we try and beat it or wait it out and ride later?? Our last effort to beat the rain, way back iin Lockport NY, was a dismal failure!! We were on the Eire Canal only a short time before the...

Sep 28, 2014 - Trip to Old Forge, NY

2014-09-27 and 28 – Syracuse RV Show, Old Forge RV Park Yesterday, we left Watkins Glen fairly early, got propane and fuel ($3.89 / gallon for diesel – cheapest we have seen in NY) and headed toward Utica, NY where we planned to stay at a Wal-mart for the night (Told you that I am becoming the queen of Wal-mart shopping across the country). Since it wasn’t that far, we decided to stop at the NY State Fair Grounds in Syracuse for the NY state RV show. I don’t think anyone has seen let alone parked an RV our size. We wound up parking by...

Sep 28, 2014 - Kayaking First Lake

2014-09-28 Kayaking First Lake The Old Forge area of New York contains the Fulton Chain of Lakes which are creatively named: First Lake; Second Lake; Third Lake; Fourth Lake etc. through Seventh Lake. Within a mile from the campground is Webb, NY with a lovely waterfront park with boat docking along its concrete bulkhead. It is located on First Lake, so, that is where we paddled. First Lake connects to Second Lake that connects to Third Lake (though I couldn’t find that lake on the map) and so on, etc. but First Lake is quite large and...

Sep 29, 2013 - Adirondacks Fall 2013

Sunday, Sept 29, 2013; 62 and sunny We almost always go camping in the Adirondacks in the fall to enjoy the beautiful foliage. The old camper is on its last legs, so we left it home and are staying in a hotel for the first time (in the Adriondacks). We are staying 3 nights at the Water's Edge Inn in Old Forge. We have a room with a small living area, fridge, microwave, and small balcony overlooking first lake. It is located within walking distance to shopping and restaurants, though we have noted that many of the restaurants, like The...

Sep 28, 2013 - A Special Visit to Old Forge

I was lucky enough to be in the area and could attend the wedding ceremony and reception for Helen and Marge. They are friends I met in Carefree. Helen is my Wii bowling partner. I stayed in a motel with Chic & Marilyn and also had the pleasure of seeing Joan & Barb and Karen and Mary (more Carefree friends). The day was beautiful and warm for the end of September; the setting was at the bed & breakfast, owned by gay guys who know how to set things up and pay attention to detail; the wedding officiator performed the ceremony for free -she...

Nov 11, 2009 - Vista Trail

Thanks to the hurricane down in Florida, we have a high pressure system with warm air hanging around the North Country. That meant that today was just beautiful with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 40's. I took advantage of this weather and having Veterans Day off to take a hike. I took a 5 mile hike on the Vista Trail just east of Old Forge, NY. It follows the ridge line parallel to Fourth Fulton Lake. The leaves were all off the trees which allowed almost constant unobstructed views. The down side to the leaves being off the...

Oct 1, 2009 - From Watkins Glen to the Adirondacks

The last two days we’ve spent in Watkins Glen, NY in the southern tip of Seneca Lake—one of the “finger lakes”. Beautiful waterfalls and scenic lake view from town. The Glen Watkins state campground was right next to the waterfalls. The campsites were like a forest surrounded by tall pines, with plenty of room for the both of us to romp and play. Watkins Glen is well-known in the grand prix circuit, and was home for the Grand Prix in the l940’s through 60’s. There are neat historic markers throughout the town marking where the finish lines...
