Jun 20, 2017 - Niagara Falls, NY.

We drove I90 toll road all the way here from Ashtabula Ohio. It's the fastest route with not much to see. We did this drive about 20-25 years ago and drove through Erie PA. Erie was pretty abandoned at that time. We spent 4 days at Niagara Falls. It was the highlight of the trip for Ava. Again we planned our activities around rain. Being at the falls the rain didn't matter. We were wet one way or the other. Papa took Ava through the Cave of the Winds. It's a natural cave behind Bridal Veil Falls. It is some 130 feet high. You follow...

Jun 18, 2017 - Niagara Falls UPDATE - NOTES

Hi all, DESPITE EDITING SOME OF THE PHOTOS AND CAPTIONS ARE NOT SHOWING CORRECTLY, WE APOLOGISE BUT ITS THE PROGRAM......... Europe is left behind and the east coast of the USA is too not without a few excitements. Getting to Niagara Falls via JFK new York, here was an adventure marked by lack of sleep and the usual American airline delays. It was always to have been a huge day but after getting to Heathrow, 7 hour flight, 5 hour time adjustment, 7 hour layover, 3 hour plane delay, booked taxi not turning up then a 45 minute taxi ride we...

May 17, 2017 - Niagara Falls and back to New York

Our accommodation in Niagara was very eclectic. It's a shop that has been converted to accommodation. Adam, our host, and his girlfriend run an artist business of some kind and live in the property as well. They have created 2 rooms to use as b and bs. It's certainly a bit different and our quarters consist of a sitting room downstairs and a loft bed. Poor Pete, stairs are not his favourite thing and he had to climb 12 or so to get into bed. Apart from that, it was very cosy although when we arrived, it was as though we were in a black...

May 16, 2017 - New York to Niagara Falls

What a fun day we've had today. The early start wasn't so much fun as we had to be up by 3:30 to catch our bus to Niagrara Falls at 5:15. We had to be at 157th St to catch our subway train to 42nd St at 4:00am and the train arrived as we did. It didn't do Pete's stress levels any good. And then, the train stopped a few times due to construction in the line. And then, when we arrived at the Port Authority Temrinal, the gates were locked from the train station to the bus station. We had to take a detour out to the street. And then, we...

Sep 29, 2016 - Falling for Niagara Falls

After a fabulous weeklong stay in Pennsylvania visiting the DeNoi family we ventured north to Grand Island, New York for our visit to another of those areas that we have been looking forward to seeing in person, Niagara Falls. Thanks to our aunt and uncle, Charlene and Dennis, we didn’t have to do any research on where to stay. Additionally, they gave us some pointers on how best to see the Falls. Neither Dennis or I have ever been to Canada so we chose the Shared Wonder Tour, a package designed to see and experience the most popular sights...

Sept 5 & 6 – N Tonawanda, New York; AA Royal Motel Hotel and Campground Here at the AA Royal Motel Hotel and Campground, we are 11 miles from Niagara Falls and the border crossing to Ontario, Canada. Yesterday we quickly set up after arrival and drove to the American side of the falls. This area is not easy to navigate; streets go every which way and with some major roads running only one way. Many streets and have two names, which would be OK if the signs had both names (they do not). We saw the mist rising from the falls several blocks...

Aug 25, 2016 - Niagara Falls NY

August 23 Moved again, this time to Niagara Falls. The KOA RV park we are staying in is really nice, just a few miles from the falls. We will be here for five nights. August 24 Went on a tour of the American side of the falls today. It included the Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, and several stops at overlooks along the Niagara River Gorge. It was a little tough to take photos on the boat with the spray from the falls. I had to quickly get the camera framed before the spray got too much on the front of the lens. Poor Cody had to stay...

Aug 8, 2016 - Day 36/Day 37

Day 36 Today we drove over to the American side to take a ride on the Maid of the Mist. The wait to get on the boat was not bad and we managed to get a spot on the railing to be able to take it all in, including lots of water. The boat went past the American fall and then right into the middle of the Canadian Falls(Horseshoe Falls). The amount water that was coming over the top was unbelievable, we all got pretty wet, definitely an immense amount of power. Sean and I were going to do the Cave of the Winds tour, which allows you to walk...

Jul 17, 2016 - Niagara Falls

There are not enough adjectives to describe the views of t,e falls. Magnificent, spectacular, beautiful, awesome - all seem not to capture the true grandeur of the falls. We enjoyed exploring Niagara Falls State Park to see the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, and a panoramic view of Horseshoe Falls. But the true expanse of the falls is best viewed from the Canadian side which is also is also cleaner and more picturesque than the American side. Our obligatory ride on Maid of the Mist was fun and we did not get as wet as expected. We...

Jun 24, 2016 - Niagara Falls

We took a sightseeing trip to Niagara Falls today. We were disappointed as Niagara Falls State Park around the falls is under construction to upgrade the landscaping and walkways. Lots of chain link fence and construction equipment making it difficult to walk around. After enjoying the cool weather by Lake Ontario, the heat caught up to us as it got up into the 80's at the falls. We escaped from the heat inside the Top of the Falls Restaurant for a snack and a beer. All the seats face the falls and all of the food is from local vendors and...

May 17, 2016 - Erie Canal & Fort Niagara

The weather forecast is for better, warmer weather so we decided to stay another day and check out The Erie Canal, a short day trip from here to Lockport, NY. Very interesting and well worth taking in. Not yet Memorial Day and several of the attractions were not open, but Jean, as usual, struck up a conversation with a lady from the visitors center and got suggestions that we do the lake shore drive and Fort Niagara on way back. Most importantly she suggested we have lunch at "Toms Diner", which of course became a top priority. The diner...

May 16, 2016 - Niagara Falls, NY

Woke up Sunday morning to 31 degree temps and wind chill in the 20's, fortunately the rain and snow (yes, snow) had stopped. It was no fun crawling around on the cold wet ground getting everything hooked up. If I have to do much more of that, there may be a flat tow car in our future. As we headed into Canada, it grew even colder and about 10 a.m. caught up with the snow we slept through. Not enough to stay on the ground, but enough to blow across the road. Jean and I didn't bring our long johns, but if this weather continues we will need...
