Aug 19, 2004 - New York (Its not the old one I come from)

Well, what can I say, I'm in New York!!! To be honest, when I first got here I was NOT impressed! It was big and smelly and i just felt overwhelmed! I was ripped off by the taxi driver who couldnt find the hotel and charged me a fortune to drive around in heavy trafffic, I now know the bus station is only a few blocks away! Anyway my opinion totally changed as i walked out of the hotel only to find the empire state building right in front of me! So i instantly went up! I'm sure you all know may favourate film is 'An affair to remember' so...

Aug 18, 2004 - New York

Greetings! Before we get started, do you remember back on February 3 when I wrote how I had just seen the longest commercial flight in history land at LAX after a 8,760 mile journey from Singapore? I also said I was supposed to be on that flight, but canceled at the last minute. I didn't say why, but it was mostly due to fear (more on that later). I always believe things happen for a reason. As it turned out I'm happy I was not on that flight, because the record was short-lived. A few months later Singapore Airlines beat its own world...

Aug 12, 2004 - Hanging out in NYC

We had to circle around New York City because of a heavy storm. Once it was apparent that we would not be able to land at JFK airport we were redirected to Philadelphia. Once we arrived above the airspace in Philadelphia we then recieved further notice that the airport there was just shut down also. So, with little fuel left we were AGAIN redirected to Baltimore, Maryland. I had a flight connection to make but it was apparent I would probably not be flying the schedule I anticipated. We finally landed in Baltimore. I was thankful that we...

Aug 5, 2004 - NYC

Made it into NYC and spent Wed. walking all over. Started in the fashion district and made our way through Flatiron and into the village. Did a walking tour there, did some shopping, ate lunch at a cafe, and sat in Washington Park. Made it up into Times Square for a bit. Today we took a boat tour around the sky line, and saw the Statue of LIberty. Explored Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and then we will be taking in dinner and a Broadway tonight. Our hotel is great. There's a shuttle back and forth which saves us from some of the...

Aug 5, 2004 - The Journey Begins

So, I get to the airport in Cleveland to check in for the first leg of my three flight journey to Kenya. The man at the desk promptly informs me that I can only stay in Kenya for a maximum of 90 days at a time before I have to leave the country. Even though I have a 6 month multiple entry visa. So he calls British Airways to see if they will let me on the plane in NYC. They say 'No' unless I change my ticket so I return in 90 days. I have to do this once I arrive at JFK because BA does not fly out of Cleveland. He was nice enough to check...

Jun 20, 2004 - Change of Plans.....

18/6 Fri HUMID & WET! For info, I've added a Cape Cod map, with a few of the places I've mentioned on it, just to show the range of places I travelled to... coz really I've been there seen it done it in the Cape now, except for the Islands, but I didn't fancy that in the rain! I got up at 6am, looked out - grey sky, went back to bed! Decided (that was difficult, I'm really out of the habit of doing decisions!) that I would head back to New York, the weather is not going to improve till tomorrow afternoon, and I'm leaving Sunday morning...

Jun 7, 2004 - Back to New York, and the Zoo...

5//6 Saturday - Nice morning, rainy afty Decided to head back in the direction of New York... En-route we stopped in Mystic, Conneticut. Went to the Olde Village - 60 craft shops - most of them not tacky! Found a really nice Native Indian shop - we could both have bought the shop twice over!!!! Then we went into 'downtown' Mystic for lunch, pretty little town, but not a lot to do, so headed back to NYC! Got back at about 6pm ish, after dropping the car off etc..., going over toll bridges in the wrong direction.....hmm.... not wise on a...

May 28, 2004 - New York, New York (accent please!)

28/5 Friday Up 4.30am - ugghh!!!! Got to the airport via a very expensive taxi - EC$100!!!!! MUST review all flight times & make sure no early morning ones! The check in was fine - the guy remembered me from when I arrived, which was a tad scary!! When I got to Puerto Rico, it took a whole 10 mins to get through US immigration, which I felt mighty fine about, considering the bad press I've had about it!!! Onward & upward to JFK..... Had to do a detour to New Jersey because it was raining in New York, so refuelled, and went back, ended up...

May 28, 2004 - New York Sight Seeing

We got up late after my long night the night before. I should have gotten up at 6:30 to make sure that we would catch the Grayline to their terminal and then the express to the Statue of Liberty. No, this did not happen because of the late night. We were away by 9:30 instead. We went to the bank to cash a traveler's check. Then we went to Grand Central Station. After some time, we found that the harbor tour was at the Intrepid, miles away from Battery Park. We located the bus and got on. This also was an adventure because the bus would not...

May 28, 2004 - Journey to JFK Airport

The ride was a traffic filled adventure, but we made it fine. We were the last to be dropped off at the terminal. We went in just about 7:05 pm to get in line for the ticket counter. The line seemed long, but was not too long. This was because the majority of passengers seemed be flying Egypt U-Haul airlines. I could not believe the number of HUGE bags that people had to check. We cleared check-in and then had almost 4 hours to take-off. We moved to the waiting area. I cleaned up my email and downloaded today's pictures. I read the paper...

May 27, 2004 - New York

The flight was on time and uneventful. AirTran has a good product. It was our first flight on them. We landed, collected our bags and then hunted for a way into town. We took the Airport BuS into town. It is the cheapest way into town, but it was not worth the extra $3 saved. We had to wait and wait at Grand Central Station for a little van to take us on to the hotel. We later discovered it was just 6 short blocks away. You live and learn. We went to the hotel and checked in. No toilet paper in the room. I got the room changed. Better view....

Oct 30, 2002 - The Big Apple during Halloweeen

The Big Apple!! What a crazy place! So much activity, so many people. But I can see why people love living here. There is so much to do and see. We stayed at The NY Athletic Club, a reciprocal Club with our MAC. This used to be great value, but they got wise to the amount of $$ they were leaving on the table!! The rate $214 plus a bunch of tax!) is still reasonable by NY standards. There was an article in USA today while we were there about 5 hotels under $200 in NYC -- none was less than $185!! -- and not as well located. We were...
