Dec 11, 2015 - New York New York!

Well, we made it. After approx 27 hrs of travelling, we arrived in the middle of New York at 9.30pm New York time. We then went and explored & found Shake Shack - which was on Ji's list to visit. As you can see by the photo, it was just what we needed after not eating all day. Actually, it was delicious. We are off exploring this morning, with Ji having outlines of lots of places to see. The weather forecast for this weekend, is that it is the warmest December on record - so much for thermals!!

Sunday, our last full day in the Grande Apple, was another busy one. We started the day with some Hilton breakfast buffet, then walked a block west to the new One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at a symbolic 1,776 feet tall to take the really fast elevator to the observation decks on floors 100-102. We caught really good weather so the view was spectacular and we wandered around all 3 floors for about an hour; gawking at the view and looking at the very thin cables that were holding the window washer...

Saturday we awoke to temps in the upper 30's but by the time we got ready, ate and headed for the subway, it had warmed up to the mid-40's which was pretty tolerable. Today's adventure took us first to Carnegie Hall, the famous concert venue a couple blocks south of Central Park for a tour. The tour was more interesting than I expected and our tour guide was a walking encyclopedia – or in today's terms, a walking Google – of the building, it's history and features. The tour was supposed to last an hour but he managed to go on for about 90...

Friday was a busy day. After we finished breakfast in the hotel we walked about 15 minutes south down Church Street to Battery Park to catch the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. We had tried to do the statue when we had the fast house parked across the Hudson in Jersey City a couple months ago, but all of the tix for that day were sold out so the lovely wife pre-booked this excursion...luckily. The statue and Ellis Island average over 10,000 visitors every day so it was crowded and many who did not pre-purchase their “crown” tickets were...

We were unhappily up at 4:00 on the morning of the 12th in order to get to Fort Lauderdale for our 7:00 am flight to the Big Hairy Apple for our weekend amongst The Great Unwashed. The flight was pretty great – it left early and got there early – and since the tix were free I opted to upgrade to the Big Front Seat, as Spirit Airlines calls it, so we got the first 2 seats on the right side of the plane both up and back. That was money well-spent...no middle seat, great legroom and we were the first ones off the plane; I would do that again...

Today is our free day and that in and of itself is an oxymoron because absolutely nothing we do today will be free. The only thing we have definitive plans to do and tickets to do it is to visit the 9/11 Museum. Our tickets are for an entry time of 1130 and we will be taking a water taxi from the nearby terminal to the pier nearest Wall Street and we will have to walk to the Museum from the pier. Our guide warned us that the traffic we have dealt with so far would be magnified substantially Tuesday when the holiday ends and things return...

2015 New York Trip

Sep 8, 2015 - New York, New York

Yesterday was our second day to visit to New York City. The bus arrived at the campground at 1000 and we headed for the Holland Tunnel. After arriving in New York City our guide gave us a good run down of the various sites we were passing. She discussed the history of New York from the time the Dutch first settled here in the 1600’s and named the place New Amsterdam. She gave a good discussion of the various ethnic groups that settled in the various areas and how, as time passed, the ethnicity of those areas has changed. Today these same...

Sep 7, 2015 - New York, New York

Yesterday was our first visit to New York, New York. We had a meeting at the campground at 1430 and then a catered early dinner. Our guide showed up around 1630 and the bus showed up at the campground about 1700. Everyone piled onto the bus and we headed to the Lincoln Tunnel. We stopped at the Hamilton Heights Park in Hoboken, New Jersey where we got a great view of the New York City Skyline. This park is directly in front of the portion of the Hudson River where the Miracle-On-The Hudson occurred. Traffic in Jersey City and Hoboken was...

Bucket Trip #2

Jul 30, 2015 - Heading home

July 30th: Carol, Rodger, and I met at the campground about 8:00am to start our journey home. Tom decided to stay one more night before heading for Michigan. At London, Ontario Carol split off from us to continue to Michigan to stay with her daughter for a while. Hopefully they'll get busy on her coach soon. Crossing the border was one of our worst. First we went through the wrong lane, got shouted at, rigs searched, veggies and eggs confiscated, and given a lesson on what we were supposed to do next time. As I mentioned that I was just...

Jul 28, 2015 - Niagara Falls

July 27th: Not a great day. We, Rodger, Tom, Carol and I left Seneca Falls about 8:00am heading for Niagara Falls. At about 10:00am In Avon, NY about 80 miles from our destination, an old gentleman turned right out of a gas station/diner and plowed right into Carol's motorhome. The door was jammed shut, and the whole front fiberglass cap was torn off. Luckily she was not hurt, just extremely shaken up. The man's truck was demolished, he said he just didn't see her, and that she had hit him. I was right behind her and saw it all. The coach...

Jul 25, 2015 - ........still New York City

July 24th: Looked forward to our bus trip from the campground into Manhattan. Having taken it several times before and had a great time, we were pretty disappointed with the day as a whole. Traffic was absolutely horrendous making the going very, very slow, and making our time at planned stops, very short. First stop was Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty. Nice ferry ride across the Hudson River, managed to walk around the base of it before being herded back to the return ferry. By now it was lunch time and we were taken to Grand...
