May 10, 2017 - New York

We have a full day here before catching the train to Boston to,or row so we were up early and set off to the subway station to by our metro pass. We found the station easily and then tried to communicate to the guy at the ticket office what we wanted to buy and if we could buy a senior's pass for Pete (you need to be 65 to qualify). It was worse than trying to talk to someone in Cuba so we went to the vending machine and followed the steps for a 7-day unlimited pass. I'd researched the pass and this one looked to be the best for us. While...

May 9, 2017 - Havana to New York

We decided to get going early to make sure we had no dramas finding our way to the airport. We were down to about 35CUC and were hoping to find a taxi at the same price as when we arrived....30CUC as this seems to be the airport to city standard price. After running the gauntlet of Ronaldo's parents and lots of Spanish thrown in our direction, we made it out into the street and waked down towards the water. Everywhere else we've been, as soon as we step onto the street, at least one person is offering a taxi. Not so today. As we walked...

May 5, 2017 - Times Square

After resting/recovering most of the day I trained into Times Square at 3 p.m. to pick up my ticket to "Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812." Masses of people, acrobats, and Restaurant Row just a block from the Imperial Theatre were all a lot of fun. Evidence of "the city that never sleeps" are illustrated in my photos of Times Square at 5 p.m. and then again at 10 p.m. "Comet" was fantastic! The theater was decorated like the interior of a Russian nobleman's palace with red velvet on the walls, red carpeting, and incredible Swarovsky...

May 4, 2017 - NYC, still

Tuesday, May 3 We took the train to the World Trade Center. A gorgeous, modern interior mall building greeted us upon arrival. We walked out and saw the New York Fire Department Drum & Fife Band playing at the 9/11 Memorial. We went into the interior of Trinity Church where a mass was being held, then over to Wall Street so Gail could get a sense of what The Street was like. We asked directions from a woman who, with her son, were having lunch. She wasn't quite sure how to get to the Ferry Terminal but shared her lunch with us. We finally...

May 2, 2017 - NYC

Ahhh, where to begin? We got here just two days ago and already have had so much happening. Sunday, April 30, we left the Poconos and passed two backpackers with hiking poles standing on the Delaware Water Gap bridge, looking at a map. I can relate. It was only 90 minutes according to my GPS to get to Liberty Marina & RV Campground in Jersey City, N.J. First we did our Costco and Trader Joe's stops to stock up, just in case there wasn't enough to be had in NYC. New York City is composed of five boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens...

Apr 9, 2017 - Day 3 - Hot Weather, Great Views

Good Evening Parents So today's itinerary was a little more relaxed than yesterday but a great day today. We started with a walk up to Rockefeller Plaza where we ascended the 67 storeys to get some fabulous views of New York. It was a beautiful clear day today and we got some fantastic views of the bridges, buildings and boroughs of New York. Our kids this year have become very adventurous with their poses for photos as you might see from the photos, me and Dowdy tried to replicate a few of them and it didn't end welll. As I hope you can...

Apr 8, 2017 - Day 2 : New York

Good Evening Parents So today we have had a very busy day. First up was breakfast, a great many went to McDs this morning as flying 3000 miles to visit something that you can find in Odsal was overlooked. The others fully embracing the New York culture went to the deli next door which served what can only be described as 'American sized portions' of various things that will cause an arterial blockage. After that we hit the New York Subway for our trip to the south of Manhattan. Armed with nearly 400 dollars in $1 bills to pay for their...

Apr 7, 2017 - Day One - New York

Good Evening Right. Somehow it is still Friday? I have no words that can be used to describe how crushingly tired I am. So today we travelled a fair distance and then persevered through the tiredness to see some sights. We started off with a trip to Grand Central Station, experienced the whispering walls and the ornate buildings, we then continued south to see the Empire State Building before stopping off just outside our hotel for our first session of obligatory tat buying. We are just meeting for dinner (it's only 20.15 here at the...

Jan 8, 2017 - Sunday In New York City

Off out into the winter weather again all wrapped up. Fortunately it was no longer snowing but apparently we had about four inches of it yesterday. The roads were clear & most of the pavements had been salted or cleared so no problem getting about apart from the bitterly cold wind. We made our way via the subway to the catholic cathedral on 5th Avenue where we gate crashed none other than the bishop half way through mass. Pretty impressive building & the pews were nearly all full but we squeezed in one just off to one side. It must have...

Jan 7, 2017 - New York, New York & Snow

At least the bed was comfortable & we got a good night's sleep. Still up early but didn't venture out till 9am. Snowy blizzard conditions & bitterly cold as we headed out to Central Park. Temperature down ten degrees fahrenheit below freezing overnight & the snow is laying well. We took the subway up 8th avenue to the South end of the park & struggling against the wind we headed in to look for some geocaches. Found a couple but conditions really not ideal. We wandered around for an hour or so but in the end we gave up & headed out of the...

Dec 23, 2016 - Day in the City

With the exception of: 1) having to sit on the tarmac at the San Diego airport for 1-1/2 hours and the 2) terrible seats (would have been better to sit on a board) getting to New York over night was a piece of cake. Patti and I napped for a few hours and then headed to the city with David as our tour guide. Went to see the World Trade Center, and the Highline (repurposed rail line that ran through buildings, now a linear park)
