Oct 13, 2011 - Last days in New York

We left Shar's Wednesday afternoon in a light rain shower. Staying off the interstate we drove through quaint towns with storefronts displaying the architectural designs of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Vineyards were prevalent all along the highway the vines heavy with purple grapes. There is an abundance of large two story farm houses through out the area many with intriguing ginger bread trim and Victorian colors. Finding a truck stop with diesel for $3.57 per gallon was a fortuitous surprise since only ten miles back diesel was...

Oct 6, 2011 - Apple picking and farm work

Hello, I had a very enjoyable day yesterday. We had lunch at the local gathering spot where I tried a new flavor of pancake, pumpkin,it was delicious. Lee spent his afternoon working on the truck tailpipe. Shar and I went apple picking. Becker Farm where we picked apples is a very large operation. For those of you in Illinois it is like Eckert's orchard. After paying for our apples we walked to the orchard to choose our fruit. We were informed tasting apples to choose the kind we wanted was permissible so we did. They do provide...

Oct 2, 2011 - Buffalo

The weather has been rainy and cool(50s-60s) therefore not conducive to outdoor activities. So Saturday Scott graciously spend the better part of his day showing us some of Buffalo. One street was truly lovely with large homes on either side of a tree lined median. We drove by one house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, then viewed several of the older buildings displaying unique architectural features. There are numerous churches obviously several decades old many constructed of stone. Scott told us most of the stone used in construction...

Sep 29, 2011 - forgotten things

Don't usually write this soon when we aren't site seeing but wrote late last night and forgot some things that are probably more interesting. Western New York has an abundance of farmers markets. Got some delicious peaches and apples last week. Ice cream shops are almost numerous as the farmers markets. Everywhere are signs of fall as the trees begin to turn, soy beans and corn stand ready for harvest, and pumpkins everywhere. Louie flushed a pheasant on our morning walk and Shar got within 50 feet of 3 deer near the barn the other night....

Sep 28, 2011 - At Shars

We have been at Shar's for a little over a week and are having both a restful and productive visit. By productive I refer to Lee accomplishing several minor repairs to the truck and trailer. I have kept up with my Bible Study and genealogical research. We did go to the movies and saw Contagious. It was an interesting story if a little disconcerting since it could happen. When I am not working on my projects Shar and I just sit and talk. To Debbi Bell, Shar has started reading The Book Thief, I am looking forward to her opinion on the book....

Sep 19, 2011 - New York

Had a pleasant trip to Shar's. Some road construction but the only real delay was going from I-70 to I-71 outside Columbus. It is always congested but worse during rush hour. We stayed Friday night north of Columbus at a park we have stayed in before. Very nice park. The next night we stayed at a KOA near Westfield New York near Lake Erie. We were close enough to the lake to walk down and snap a couple of pictures of the beginning of sunset on the lake (which I will add later). It is great to see Shar and Scott. We celebrated her birthday...

Jun 9, 2009 - More New York

More from New York This has been an especially enjoyable visit with Shar and Scott primarily because Shar has been able to do so much more than in previous years. Shar cooks for herself, keeps the kitchen clean as well as taking care of the horses, and mowing the yard. I really have not done much to help her this year. However Lee has found a few things to keep him busy. He and Scott got her golf cart running then he repaired the barn door replacing the old siding. I was Lee’s, gofer, holder, screw and nail keeper and in charge of keeping...

Jun 1, 2009 - In New York

Hello from New York ; We arrived at Shar’s on May 26th and so far the weather has been cool and mostly cloudy with some rain. I really like Shar’s house. While the floor plan is unusual with the den, which used to be the garage, kitchen, dinning area and living room on front side and the laundry room, small bath, Scott’s office, guest room, main bath and master bedroom on the back side they have more square footage and much more closet space. Scott is setting up the basement as a work space. Off the den is a nice patio room with...
