Jun 21, 2017 - Tupper Lake to Mason Lake

60 miles. Day without rain - hooray. For a state highway, Rt 30 was a pleasure. Many beautiful views of lakes and mountains. Cloud formations were endless - all shapes and sizes. Temps in low 60's were perfect. Surprised a young wild turkey who was not happy with me. Church of the Transfiguration at Blue Mountain Lake was a surprising respite - lovely grounds right on the lake. Lunch at Cedar River CC. Met another fellow rider - turned out she was from Newburyport, MA - small world. Powered thru Indian Lake to Mason Lake. Great Day.

Jun 20, 2017 - Lake Placid to Tupper Lake

61 miles today. Weather ranged from sunny to pouring rain. i now know how those adirondack streams and rivers get all that water. road from LP to Wilmington was beautiful. followed the west branch of the Ausable River. Decided to take the "shorter route" - climbing Whiteface, unfortunately, it poured rain the whole way. Drenched again. Managed to get soaked twice more on the trip as clouds moved thru like freight trains. Biked past LaVida - the outdoor recreation center for Gordon College in Wenham - i knew it was somewhere in NY. finished...

Jul 17, 2016 - Lake Placid, NY

Lake Placid On our 3 day weekend we packed our bags and headed for Lake Placid and hit it at a perfect time; good weather, small crowds, and in between a very big horse show and an Iron Man Competition over the next weekend. Jean found an old family-owned hotel that was really neat, old, but big rooms and baths. Our first night we went to an outdoor concert in the middle of town on Mirror Lake. As you can tell from the pictures, folks came by boat, paddle boards, inner tubes and a few simply swam across the lake. We were surprised by the...

Aug 25, 2015 - Lake Placid (Northern Adirondacks)

After Vermont, we headed to Lake Placid which is located in the Adirondack Park, a 6 million acre preserve under the management of the State of New York. I am sure you will remember that Lake Placid was site of the 1980 Winter Olympics and the “Miracle on Ice.” We were struck by how small the arena is and wondered where all the visitors stayed as there were mostly roadside motels in the area. We were also struck by the number of closed businesses; they could sure use another Olympics. As you can imagine Stephanie had her list of “must...

Cat Nap Inn 2015

Jun 25, 2014 - Lake Placid

June 25 Lake Placid Change in plans! The day turned out to be rainy -we have been quite lucky. The first bit of rain since we arrived. We are so thankful there was no rain during our biking trip. When we arrived in Lake Placid, we decided to spend the night here instead of the campground. It's great to have the flexibility! So we explored Lac Placid all day - it hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and 1980' so it had quite the museum and two stadiums. Quite a lovely resort town, settled in the mountains on a lake, lots of shops and...

Sep 21, 2013 - Days 13-14

We left the shore yesterday and headed through the Adirondacks to a KOA near Lake Placid. We saw quite a few trees that are on the verge of turning, and the drive was hilly and twisty. It really isn't that far from our last stop but took quite a while. The campground is very pretty with lots of trees but no grass, apparently because of the shade, so the ground is too dusty for the cats to get out. They weren't happy. Today we stopped at Whiteface Mountain ski area which was host of the 1932 and 1980 winter olympics. The ski mountain is...

New England 2013

Jul 25, 2013 - Lake Placid

We visited the Olympic Jumping Complex, you can see up close the ramp that ski jumpers launch from before flying over the length of a football field. We took the elevator to the observation deck of the K-120 meter jump. The ski lift was broken so we cheated and drove part way then took the elevator. At the top there is a panoramic view of the Adirondack High Peaks. You get a bird's eye view of what the jumpers see as they start to accelerate towards the end of the ramp. It takes courage to take off at 60mph and fly through the air and land...

Jul 24, 2013 - Lake Placid

We woke up to 55 degree temp and rain. It had rained during the night and was still drizzling in the morning. We started the day with another trip to Urgent Care. Diana is still fighting a bladder infection. Got a new drug to try. Let's hope this is the fix. We picked up the drugs and decided since it was cold outside we would visit The Lake Placid Olympic Museum and the Event Center in the center of downtown Lake Placid. The Event Center housed the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' hockey game. The museum gives you history of how a tiny mountain town...

Jul 31, 2012 - Home to dirty truck and rutted driveway

Hey Guys We're HOME! We made it back up the road and the Cougar is parked in it's "guest room" site. Which is amazing considering that the driveway's rutted out in front of where it sits. It's not fully cleaned out (it took a couple of days to pack and we've only added stuff) so it'll probably take a couple of days to empty. We've put over 13,072 miles on the truck and have hours of pictures and memories. Thank you God, for such a safe journey! Thanks to, to all of you for your interest and support along the way. We're having a bit of a let...

Jul 18, 2011 - Lake Placid - USA

Jun 10, 2011 - OH WOW !

Well I have written this before and somehow it disappeared, frustrating. But the past two days have been FANTASTIC. I am a HUGE US Olympic fan. We went to the Holy Grail for me. The Herb Brooks Arena the home of the 1980 US AMATEUR victory over the Russian PROFESSIONAL team. The US went on to the gold medal victory over Norway. It gave me goose bumps. The Olympic 1932 & 1980 Museum was fantastic. Two times winternOlympicspics were held in this small Adirondack town of Lake Placid. We also went to the ski jump venue. WOW. We are now at...

Jun 9, 2011 - A Roaming Tale

OK so it has been a while since I wrote the blog. Thanks to Shirley for keeping it up. Here is the real story. My father got lost in Alexandria Bay and it took me two days to find him. After taking him off the little island with the two room cottage, we both had to swim to shore and the St.Lawrence river water in June is COLD COLD! Obviously just kidding. We were on an island close to Canada and Verizon texted me that my roaming charges were near $50! So I turned my phone off which meant no Internet and thus no blog from moi. Anyway what a...
