Nov 9, 2012 - We made it!

The whirlwind is over for a few days. After 1300 miles we pulled into Freeport NY where Dad and Herta are staying with a friend. Dad and I toured the house where over 250 gallons of heating oil mixed with about 6 feet of sea water filled the lower levels of their home. The environmental workers have done a good job of clean up but more is needed. We then toured favorite haunts of ours by the water and it is indeed sad the damage that is evident everywhere. A winter storm also hit the area Wednesday night which added insult to injury to...

Jul 25, 2012 - Gone fishin'

Dad and I went fishing yesterday on a beautiful summer day. Of course I forgot my phone which has the camera so you will just have to imagine the scene. Dad out caught me four flukes to three as we went way out in the ocean. We were past where all the oil tankers were anchored awaiting the pilots to take them into NY harbor. By the way our computer died here on LI and we need a new one so this blog continues to be done on my phone. We capped the day with another cook out with fresh fish and burgers with left over corned beef. Leaving in a...

Jul 24, 2012 - What's goin' on?

Yesterday we interviewed a woman to help Dad with care giving for my step mom Herta. All looks good and and this full time assistance will be a tremendous help. Herta has Alzheimers. I also painted the downstairs bathroom while Shirley did crafty stuff and cooked cornbeef and cabbage. Dad and I are going fishing today and we are set to leave for PA and our camper tomorrow morning. Enjoy the pics.

Jul 23, 2012 - Boats and more boats

After church Shirley and I went for lunch on the nautical mile to a hole in the wall on the water. Food was excellent and the view spectacular. I hung out for a couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere. In the evening we went to dinner at Herta's grand daughters house. Margo and Tony put on an excellent spread. Margo's father Lutz was there with two teenage nephews from Germany. It is always good to see Lutz. Enjoy the pics.

A good day indeed. Off to Church. Enjoy the pics.

Jul 21, 2012 - Cross country

Sorry for no blog yesterday it was a long trip back and a bit of rest was in order. We had a few delays after bidding the west coast Strachans adieu. Flights were delayed in Atlanta. We tried to fly stand by only to have one seat available for one Bob Strachan. So we waited for our original flight which was also delayed. We reached home around 11pm after Shirley picked us up in the big honkin dually. It rained most of the day yesterday but I was able to grill outside for dinner. Sunny today and a trip to my favorite nautical mile for lunch....

Jun 4, 2011 - Holy Lobster Batman

Yesterdays main activity was a trip to Oceanside (15 minutes) to Jordan's Lobster Farm, on the water of course. You go up to a window and order, take your lunch to the dock and eat waterside. I had lobster bisc and a lobster roll. Yum. Dad and Lutz had soft shell crab sandwiches. Shirley and Herta had salads. We all agreed the seafood was the best ever. Lutz even had raw clams. They also have a fresh seafood market and we toured the lobster farm. Huge salt water tanks with lobsters and crabs. Even a guy shucking clams. Jordan's provide the...

Jun 3, 2011 - Beautiful day AND a concert

Another great water day. Dad and I went to one of my all time faves, the Nautical Mile in Freeport. Then we all went to Brooklyn where Margo (my step niece)was the music director for the elementary music program. What a great job the kids did in this 1 1/2 hour Disney extravaganza. That of course means kudos to Margo. Her public school received a Disney grant and they sent a couple of Disney folks to Brooklyn to work with the kids on an Aladdin production. This also gave the school the copyright to use the Disney logos etc. So the theme for...

Jun 2, 2011 - Lazy Day

We are in Freeport on Long Island still at my father and Herta's house. It is always a pretty laid back time when I am here. Usually I come by myself but this time of course Shirley is here. She hasn't seen my dad for over 2 years since he stopped coming for Thanksgiving. It has been even longer since Shirley has seen Herta. The weather is mild and windy. My brother Glenn bar-b-qued a fantastic london broil last night. It was nice to see him. I grew up not far from here in Wantagh but spent countless days at my grandfather and grandmother's...

Jun 1, 2011 - Where in the world are we?

After leaving the Amish country of PA yesterday we motored up through Pennsylvania on perhaps the worst roads we have seen in the 9000 miles we have driven already. We spent a nice night at my brother in law Lutz's home in Bushkill near the Delaware Water GAP. After dinner and a nice nights sleep we left for Long Island today with Lutz driving and now we are at my father's house in Freeport NY. NO WAY were we going to negotiate NYC traffic with the rig. We are staying 3 days and nights and then Lutz is taking my dad and me back to PA and...
