Jun 30, 2014 - Washington Irving Country

Today was a most interesting driving day. I did not drive on one 4 lane highway. Every road I took was two lanes. I went through the Poconos, Adirondacks, Catskills, and I'm now in the Berkshires. The morning was very rainy, in some places it downright poured. Between the dark clouds and the overhanging trees I had to turn the dashboard lights up all the way so that I could see the speedometer. I drove through towns like Lebanon, Damascus, and Galilee; all in New York. I'm now about 130 miles from East Lyme. I should be there sometime early...

Summer Trip 2014

Sep 21, 2013 - Bash Bish Falls

Today we did some hiking closer to the campground. Taconic State Park is in Copake Lake and lies on New York’s border with Massachusetts. We elected to walk the trail that leads into Bash Bish Falls Park in Massachusetts. The three-mile round trip hike was very enjoyable especially the trail along Bash Bish Brook and the waterfall that we reached. Annie took advantage of the brook for a couple of swims.

Sep 19, 2013 - Copake

On Tuesday we moved from North Stonebridge to Copake, NY. We are now in West Copake at the KOA. We are very near the point where the NY, MA, and CT borders meet. It is on the southern edge of the Berkshires. Yesterday we ventured northeast into Massachusetts to October Mountain for a hike. The leaves have not changed color yet but the rolling hills of the Berkshires are still pretty and we had an enjoyable day. We will be here for a week and look forward to a couple more day trips.

Sep 12, 2011 - Norman Rockwell

We took a side trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It was a really great trip through the beautiful green hills of New York and Western Massachusetts. Along the way we saw our first tree with some fall colors. Many of Rockwell's paintings are in the museum. I was surprised by how large the paintings were. Many were on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post for nearly 40 years. We also toured his last studio that was very interesting--it still has the knife marks on the floor where Rockwell cut the canvas down...

Sep 10, 2011 - The Berkshires and Other Things

Today was a 240 mile drive west from Cape Cod, thru Massachusetts, and finishing just inside the New York state line at Copake. Along the way we drove on the Mass Turnpike with 4 lanes of traffic until we passed the Interstate that headed to New York City. We stopped at a service center and saw the Budweiser Clydesdale's had also stopped. We got some great photos of these beautiful horses. The mountains of Western Massachusetts were really nice with lots of trees. A few trees were starting to change colors.

Aug 30, 2011 - Copake, NY

Where, you may ask, is Copake, NY? Go north along the east NY border. Where Massachusetts and Connecticutt meet, look west. Copake is there, east of Catskill. Why, you may ask, are we here? We could not get in touch with the campground in East Lyme, Connecticutt. We tried all day yesterday and this morning. We tried other campgrounds nearer to the coast, and, if they answered, they didn't have electricity. So, we came to this very nice KOA. How long, you may ask, did it take us to drive the 137 miles here? 6 hours. We left on about a 30...

Sep 13, 2010 - Plymouth and The Cape

Last Tuesday we moved about 170 miles to the east and, after another battle to get a suitable site, settled in at the Middleboro KOA. Well, we almost settled. Unfortunately only three of our four leveling legs functioned properly with the fourth stuck about a half inch below fully retracted. While I was able to retract the other three, the fourth leg not being nested meant that the See Ya would not shift out of neutral. This problem would need to be solved. Middleboro is about 10 miles from Plymouth and Plymouth is the home of Carol and...

Sep 6, 2010 - Copake, NY

Copake, NY is only a hundred miles from Manhattan, but is remarkably remote. Our visit here started out negatively, but turned around thanks to Sue's persistence. We started out from Florida and I made a wrong turn onto route 17 east (should have been west). We got to Chester and I decided to not turn around but instead to head north on route 9 to route 208 to Interstate 84. About 12 miles into that plan we saw the sign that said,"Vertical Clearance 9' 9" 3/4 of a mile ahead." We are 13'1" tall. We pulled onto a side street, unhooked the...

Oct 15, 2008 - Copake, NY

On Tuesday, we drove from Intercourse, PA to Copake, NY. It was a pretty uneventful day until just after dark; as we drove down the highway at 65mph, we hit a small owl. He hit the hood of the rv and slipped up to the base of the windshield and driver’s-side windshield wiper. So we drove the last hour or so with the (dead on impact) owl riding along. After arriving at the rv park, we had a late-night funeral for the little guy … a beautiful bird.
