Sep 16, 2012 - Kershaw Park on Canandaigua Lake

It was such a beautiful day today that we decided not to go home just yet. We drove over to Canandaigua, NY and stopped at Kershaw Park just to walk around and enjoy the lake. As we walked along the lake, we came across two swings like the one above. One had a couple of young lovers in it and we figured, they were there for the afternoon. She was lounging on his lap. So as we walked along we found the swing above occupied by this guy. We just managed to hang around long enough to make him uncomfortable and we took his seat! We decided...

Our 2012 Travels

Sep 16, 2012 - Sonnenberg Mansion

This morning we decided to head over to see Sonneberg Mansion and the gardens since it is such a beautiful day. After we purchased our tickets we headed straight for the mansion to get into the next tour. The mansion is a 40 room Queen Anne mansion which was built between 1885 and 1887 by New York City bank financier Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson as a summer home. They named the estate "Sonneberg" which is German for "Sunny Hill." After we toured the mansion we went out to view all of the gardens which are...

Our 2012 Travels

Sep 11, 2012 - Niagara Falls U.S.A.

We started today with a delicious breakfast served by our hosts. There was fruit, eggs, meat, potatos, beans, muffins and breads, juice, tea and coffee. We checked out of our room but left the truck at the B and B and walked to Whitewater Walk. This is a walk on the boardwalk along the rapids which are formed after the water leaves the falls in the Niagara River. The water drops 52 feet in less than a mile. It is 35 feet deep and travels at a rate of 22mph. Some of the rapids splash as high as 6 to 8 feet. Again we took dozens of pictures....

Sep 10, 2012 - Niagara Falls Cananda

Our first stop today was the Anchor Bar and Grill in Buffalo, NY. This is the restaurant where Buffalo Wings got started way back in the 1960's. The wings were pretty good but not the best we have had. From there, we crossed the border into Canada and drove to Niagara Falls, Ontario. We found the Bed and Breakfast we had reserved. It is called Straithaird and is a lovely place owned by a couple of Scots. He told us about the Adventure Pass which has four attractions and unlimited bus rides for forty eight hours. We got them from him then...

Sep 7, 2012 - Letchworth State Park

We were on the road early, headed to Letchworth State Park. They call it the Grand Canyon of the East. It is a large canyon carved out by glaciers and a river. It does not have the colors and formations of the Grand Canyon but there are impressive views. In 1972 the river was so high that the Hogsback (see photo) was almost under water. Only the top was above the waterline. We ate at the Glen Iris Inn, a beautiful setting right beside Middle Falls. They were preparing for a wedding which would take place at 5:00pm. What a wonderful spot for...

Today we drove south through the town of Cananadaigua then along the shoreline of Lake Cananadaigua which is one of the Finger Lakes in Western New York. They are a group of long thin lakes that the Native Americans said was where the Great Spirit put his hand upon the land. We drove on south and east to Lake Keuka where we had lunch at a restaurant on the shore. After lunch, we drove down along the shoreline to the first of many wineries in the area. Several of the Finger Lakes have a wine trail. This winery, Keuka Springs, was a small...

Aug 9, 2012 - Canandaigua, NY

It was a fabulous 90 miles drive from Corning up Hwy 14 along the beautiful Seneca Lake. We drove passed Watkins Glen Raceway, NASCAR friends eat your hearts out, where there is a big race this weekend. Through thi smedium, our trip journal, we have many friends we have not had the pleasure of meeting face to face. This is a stop where, one of the couples who regularly read our travel journal noticed we'd be in their area and asked us to stop by for "meet-n-greet". Diane and Reese have been reading our pieces for more than 2 years, they...

Jun 4, 2011 - Sonnenbery Mansion

Today while the men went to the Hamfest, the ladies took off to do some touring. We went to the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historical Park. When we arrived it started to rain so the touring of the gardens were limited. But we did tour the mansion. Perched atop the sun-bathed hill of the estate known as “Sonnenberg” (German for “sunny hill”) is a 40-room Queen Anne-style mansion. New York City bank financier Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson, the daughter of New York State governor Myron Holley Clark,...
