Oct 14, 2012 - OTRA - NY - Rochester

Much as I hated to leave Camp Eriez, we have miles to go and people to see so off we went around 10:15 a.m. for the 170-mile leg of our journey to Caledonia, New York where we’ll be for about a week, visiting Billy (my son) and his family and Betsy (my daughter) and her husband. The vineyards we saw along I-90 are getting ready for late harvest and/or settling in for the winter. Evidently, the areas along Lake Erie are great for grapes because we saw miles and miles of vineyards, much like the miles and miles of soybean fields further...

OTRA – NY – Caledonia 9/6/11 Waited until today to leave for Billy’s area. This way we won’t be driving with all the Labor Day traffic…although I wonder just how much there would have been since Labor Day in this area of New York was a complete washout. Anyway, on the road by 10:00 a.m. with only 141 easy miles to drive today. When we went over the bridge (Erie Canal) in Sylvan Beach, it was funny to see only three or four boats tied up whereas over the weekend there must have been 30 or 40...moored 3 abreast in some spots. Pulled into...

We wanted to get off early so we’d have time to see Granddaughter Abbey at her riding lesson in Rochester today so we left around 10:20 under cloudy (but no rain) skies. WELCOME TO NY: 11:10. Followed the NY Thruway to right below Buffalo but then switched over to NY 20…a nice straight red road. As before, lots and lots of vineyards with grapes soon to be picked. We should have stopped and gotten just one bunch to snack on. Somewhere, about an hour from our destination, we saw 2 pastures full of reindeer. I think they're Santa's reindeer...

8/28/09 Left this morning around 12:45 p.m. since the drive to Weedsport, NY was a short one of about 70 miles. We’re going there to visit with my daughter, Betsy, and to go to the NY State Fair. I had wanted to get the fair train from Rochester directly to the fair but figured we could spend 2 nights at the campground for the same amount so off we went. Hmph. A slight snag in the plans here. When the honeywagon guy emptied our tanks last Thursday, he really yanked on the black tank handle and it broke off in his hands. He was able to push...

8/14/09 Off we go at 11:00 a.m. North on I-81 to just south of Syracuse then west on SR 20 instead of I-90, a toll road. Well, talk about hills! I thought the hills in the Poconos were bad but these were a LOT longer and a LOT higher. That temp gauge did get up there today! I did not like this part of the trip at all! The one hill was a very long hill and no matter what I did, that truck just kept going slower and slower until we were creeping along at 20 mph. That was really scary to me. I was afraid it would quit going forward and start...

Left Brennan Beach today around 1:00 p.m. to travel about 2 1/2 hours west to The Genesee Country Campground in Caledonia, NY, about 20 mins. south of Rochester NY. Arrived here at 4:00 Lot 23. Quite a nice little campground for $25 a night. The electric and water facilities are shared (only 30 amp electric) and there is no cable or sewer. However, there are 4 good "antenna" stations and a honey-dipper comes through twice a week so we can still use the "real dishes", LOL. And, most importantly, it's clean, quiet, and country. Lots of...
