Jul 18, 2017 - Genesee Country Village in Mumford, New York

Our plans for yesterday were to go on a hike in the state park in the morning and then do laundry in the afternoon. We were just 10 or 15 minutes into our hike when we started hearing thunder, so we turned around and went back to the RV. 15 or 20 minutes later, the thunderstorm was right over the campground. There was a lot of thunder, a heavy downpour and a little wind, but nothing severe. Our campsite is underwater again, all except the gravel parking strip. There is very poor drainage here. There hadn’t been any rain in days, but water...

Our 2017 Travels

Jul 16, 2017 - Watkins Glen State Park in Watkins Glen, New York

Today, we drove over to Seneca Lake, which is the lake east of Keuka Lake. We took Route 14 down the western shore of Seneca Lake. There are occasional views down to the lake from the road. The hillside is lined with vineyards, wineries and tasting rooms. Some are big, fancy places; others are small and plain. One is in a renovated barn. A couple are in buildings built to look like barns. It is a pretty drive. We passed through the village of Watkins Glen at the southern end of Seneca Lake on our way to Watkins Glen State Park. The park...

Our 2017 Travels

Jul 15, 2017 - Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua, New York

Today was cloudy so we decided an indoor activity would be best. After lunch, we drove to Canandaigua at the north end of Canandaigua Lake. The drive was on secondary roads through farm country. The Finger Lakes Region is mainly farm country, including some Amish farms. There are caution signs for horses and buggies along the roads, but we didn’t see any. This is a grape-growing area and there are lots of wineries. We spent a couple hours at the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion, the summer home of Frederick and Mary Thompson (Sonnenberg is...

Our 2017 Travels

Jul 14, 2017 - Keuka Lake State Park in Bluff Point in the Finger Lakes Region of New York

Today, we continued east on I-90 across Ohio and into Pennsylvania. Erie, Pennsylvania, was the only metropolitan area we went through today. Just east of Erie, we got on I-86 and took it into New York State, leaving the heavy traffic behind. In Bath, we got off the Interstate and headed north on Route 54 to Hammondsport and then continued along the western shore of Lake Keuka on Route 54A. Route 54A goes through several little touristy towns and has pretty views of the lake. Our destination was Lake Keuka State Park. We are staying at the...

Our 2017 Travels

Aug 10, 2008 - A Ride Down Memory Lane in the Finger Lakes

A “ride down memory lane” was this weekend’s adventure. We rode through the countryside along three of New York’s beautiful Finger Lakes: Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake, riding past many Mennonite vegetable farms with their distinctive patchwork quilt fields, multiple dozens of local wineries, one “meadery,” and many lovely vineyards. Our destinations were our undergrad college haunts: Keuka College in Keuka Park on the banks of Keuka Lake, and Cornell University in Ithaca, located according to the song, “high above Cayuga’s...
