We went hiking along Inman Gulf in the Tug Hill region. Tug Hill is a huge slab of shall between Syracuse and Watertown that was pushed up prior to the last ice age. The western slop of the hill, near Lake Ontario, is 300 feet high while the eastern slop of the hill, along the Black River, is 2,000 feet high. This region receives the most snow fall east of the Rocky Mountains per year. At the end of the last ice age, glacial run off in the streams cut 200-300 foot deep canyons through the Tug Hill region.
