Jun 16, 2017 - Alexandria Bay, NY

After our stay in Verona, NY, we headed to the banks of the Saint Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay, NY. The town is a little resort town with T-shirt and gift shops, bars, and restaurants. They tell us it also a big winter recreation area with ice fishing, ice sailing and snowmobile riding - think we will take their word for it. Our campsite faced the water where we could see tankers traveling the Seaway. We learned that pointed-nose tankers are called “salties” because they go into the ocean; the round-bowed tankers are called “lakers”...

New York and Maine

Sep 16, 2014 - 2014-09-16.Boldt Castle

We arose to find a spectacularly blue sky so, drove to Clayton, had breakfast at Kozy Koffee (great by the way) and drove to Alexandria Bay where we boarded the Uncle Sam Boat Alexandria Bay II for a guided cruise through the Thousand Islands and a trip to Boldt Castle. Normally, we are not “tour” folks but this one was definitely worth the money; the guide was very informative and the information delivered in a natural, relaxed way. Turns out there are not 1000 islands in the Thousand Islands but 1,864 but not wanting to give up the salad...

The tour lasted 2 1/4 hours and covered both the American and Canadian sides of the river. Click here for more information about the Two Nation Tour that we enjoyed. At the end of the tour, the ship dropped us off at the Boldt Castle on Heart Island. We enjoyed the self-guided tour of the castle before returning to the mainland. Click here for information on Boldt Castle.

Jul 21, 2013 - Thousand Islands

Finally...a break in the weather. Calm waters and 73 degrees. We drove into Alexandria Bay to take one of the cruises. We got there for the 10:00 Cruise. Okay..today is Sunday and it is a different schedule than the weekdays. So we are leaving at 1:00. We walked around town and had breakfast. The cruise is a 3 hour tour that goes 9 miles down the St. Lawrence River past many of the 1000 islands to Singer Castle. The castle was built by the President of Singer Sewing Machine Company as a "hunting lodge". He didn't want his wife to know how...

Jul 18, 2013 - Alexandria Bay, NY

We spent our first full day cruising the coast of Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. It was a beautiful drive through harbor towns like Cape Vincent, Clayton and Alexandria Bay. The lunch at Bella's in the town of Clayton was great with a view of the river and some of the 1000 islands. We figured the two couples having lunch next to us may have owned one of the islands or a million dollar house nearby. Can you tell we were ease-dropping? Other than sightseeing we searched for info on cruises through the 1000 Islands. Decided Alexandria...

Jul 17, 2012 - Alexandria Bay

After leaving the casino, we picked up the Seaway Scenic Trail along Lake St. Lawrence River, which separates the U.S. and Canada. It was an excellent road and we enjoyed occasional glimpses of the Lake and the small villages. We saw thousands of apple orchards, which seemed strange, but became clear when we saw the Mott plant in Oswego. We stopped at Alexandria Bay, a really neat tourist town and hub of the Thousand Islands district. Here, the wealthy of the early 1900s built huge mansions and the rich and famous stayed. We took a ferry...

Jul 2, 2012 - 1000 Islands Boat Tour

We took a wonderful boat tour along the St. Lawrence River to Singer Castle and Boldt Castel. An Island is defined as any rock / Dirt outcropping in the river that has a tree and some other vegetation. Singer Castle - Currently the castle really in disprair, leather cracked and pealing, lamp shades with holes, etc; however, the owners are making restorations and they have a long way to go. A part of American history and local folklore is Singer Castle on Dark Island, located on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Singer Castle is the only castle on...

Sep 10, 2011 - Love upstate NY!

Rome, NY – Camp Bobbie We are back in Rome,NY after a week of traveling north to see friends. We were fortunate to have decent weather while we were up there and only had rain a few times except on our trip back here. We couldn't be in this area without a trip to see our last year's caravan friends, Penny & Gary, at her Dad's farm. We interrupted Penny in a woodworking project and found Gary laying under a hay bailer....so much work on a farm and they have their share there! But, Penny had made a delish apple pie for us and we had a great...

Jul 1, 2011 - Thousand Islands / Alexandria Bay - USA

Unser visum...

Aug 26, 2010 - Alexandria Bay and 1000 Island Boat Tour

Thursday we went to Alexandria Bay and took a boat tour around the 1000 Island area. Actually we learned there are over 1800 islands including both the US and Canada waters. When this area was developed in the 1800’s it was the vacation spot of the rich. The first area our tour boat went to was called ‘Million Dollar Row’. You can only guess what these homes look like. We saw large Islands and small Islands where the house covered most of the island. When the boundary was set between Canada and the US they made sure no Island was split by...

Jun 29, 2010 - Hampton Beach bound

We finally got on the road at about 2:30 this afternoon. Glenna worked til noon, and I took longer than expected to do some lake tests and finish up some last minute jobs. We decided to cross at the Thousand Island Bridge at Gananoque, so headed east on the 401. There were several accidents and all the over passes were filled with flag wavers in honour of a couple of our soldiers who were making their final trip on the Highway of Heroes. That's the second time we passed a motorcade on our way to Kingston. Pretty sad and always leaves a lump...

Jun 26, 2009 - 1000 Islands New York

It's been a while since I've updated our web site, We spent some time in Charlotte, Michigan getting service work done on the coach, and several days at the Newmar plant in Nappanee, Indiana. In the middle of all that I had to travel to southern Illinois, to visit a sick brother. Thank goodness we ran into several friends in both Charlotte, and in Nappanee, so in the midst of all the turmoil, we did find time for some fun. We left Nappanee, with some friends on the 24Th of June, we are now in Clayton New York, camped on the Saint Lawrence...
