On September 3rd we drove to Lovelock, NV about 80 miles southwest of Winnemucca on I-80 to see the Giant Tufa Park. Calling it a "Park" was certainly a misnomer: there were no markers nor any facilities. It was on a dirt road about a mile from the highway. However, the tufa formations were fascinating. Tufa is a porous limestone deposit formed when water rich in calcium carbonate interacts with shoreline concentrations of algae and bacteria. These formations were made at the close of the last Ice Age. A current example of Tufa formations...

Jun 6, 2008 - Lovelock

Six hours of prevention, EFI was superceeded by a rare instance of caution/intelligence. After consultation with my good friend Dr. Scott Schell last night...a little caution and healing now could make a huge difference in me enjoying/participating in the rest of the trip....yes I rode in the van and expertly advised the ringleaders! An agonizing six hours. The bikers experienced 20mph winds alternating from directly at their back to buffeting sideways. At times 30mph riding speed was common....I was sooo jealous...and they had many smiles....
