Oct 10, 2018 - Old Signs & New Hotels

There were a couple of things in the downtown area I’d wanted to do yesterday but ran out of time so decided to do them this morning. The first was the Neon Museum on N Las Vegas Boulevard. I arrived at 10:15 but it turned out there were school groups going through and they weren’t selling tickets to the public until 11. Went back to my car, found a shady spot and read my book while I finished my coffee. This was a kind of unique “museum”. First of all, it was outside. It was a bunch of old neon signs that were display around a path in a...

Oct 9, 2018 - An Offer I Couldn't Refuse

Plan was to spend today in the downtown area. Easy commute. Had researched a garage and although I didn’t end up using that one was very close to destination. However due to a bit of misunderstanding of the GPS went the wrong way but ended up at the Mob Museum on Stewart Street at 10:15. This is a rather comprehensive history of organized crime and like most museums these days has a lot of interactive exhibits. Ironically it is in the old court house where some of the mobsters were prosecuted. Starts back in the early 1900s w/ the large...

Oct 8, 2018 - Viva Las Vegas!

This is the first Courtyard I’ve stayed in since Richmond, CA where my window was busted out. Since Courtyards don’t provide breakfast, which is why I ended up at McDonalds there, I headed to McDonalds near here for breakfast. It as the same set up as Richmond. A pad in front of strip mall. I was very nervous but things worked out okay. Headed downtown around 9:30. Took a Big Bus sightseeing tour that lasted a bit over 2 hours. It was your rather typical tour hitting the cities highlights…pointed out all the hotel/casinos on the strip, mob...

Oct 7, 2018 - A Fine Day in Death Valley

Left Barstow around 8. Spent an hour on I-15 before heading north, at Baker, on CA 127 for Shoshone. As soon as you come off the interstate there is a sign that says “Next services 57 miles” (i.e Shoshone). When I got to Shoshone thought I’d top off my tank even though I still had more than half. Glad I didn’t have to fill it up. $5.10 a gallon. I’m pretty sure this is the most I’ve ever paid. Just north of Shoshone turned left on to Badwater Road (CA 178). This time the sign says “Next services 72 miles”. And for the first 50 of the 72...

Oct 2, 2018 - Viva Las Vegas.

October 3, 2018 Las Vegas. So yesterday we took off to get some supply’s (beer and wine) and do the Laundry. We headed to Henderson Nevada because there was a Sam’s Club and a Walmart there. After we completed our shopping trip we met Al and Rose for dinner. By then it was already 8pm. As we were driving back we came over a hill and spotted the city all lit up like Christmas. Never did we think I was Las Vegas. We thought the whole area was like this. However today we drove to Las Vegas only to find out that the lights we saw last night...

Sep 23, 2018 - Las Vegas NV - Las Vegas KOA at Sam's Town - Journey Campground

Decided to make a stopover in Las Vegas to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Went to the buffet at Sam's Town for dinner and broke even on a poker machine. Can't complain about that. Oh, and we checked out some campgrounds at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It was disappointing. One campground was closed and the second we went to was full of older mobile homes, not the kind of thing you should see in a campground at all. Also, Lake Mead's water level was way down. Overall, not we expected when we drove out there.

Jul 27, 2018 - Nevada, Part 2

Today was our 44th anniversary and we spent it in Las Vegas. I would tell you what we did but you know the saying, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Oh, okay, I guess I can made an exception this one time. We visited Hoover Dam in the morning. You have to go through a security checkpoint to reach the dam. We walked about halfway across the top of the dam. Again, size is deceptive. Maybe it’s the size of the canyon that the dam spans that makes the concrete structure seem smaller than it really is. Boulder City, which sprung up to...

Jul 26, 2018 - Nevada, Part 1

It was a frustrating and expensive day. It began in Williams when we needed a new front tire on the car and it ended in Las Vegas when we finally gave in and replaced the rear roof air conditioner in the motor home. We discovered yesterday when we left Albuquerque (I hope this is the last time I have to remember how to spell Albuquerque) that one of the tires on the car was losing air. This morning we went to a tire shop to have the tire patched. But the pinhole was very close to the sidewall and the technician said the patch might not...

May 8, 2018 - Housekeeping

Today we got caught up on the laundry, cleaned up the motorhome some and emptied the holding tanks. We pull out tomorrow and head north for a couple of hours to our next stop. Will need to fill the propane tank soon. We went to the Olive Garden for supper. Good food but way too much. I think we brought home enough for lunch and supper tomorrow. The temperature when we came out of the Olive Garden was 41° C or 105.8° F. Time to find somewhere cooler!

May 8, 2018 - Las Vegas, Nevada

We have moved a bit further north. The RV is parked at the FamCamp on Nellis Air Force Base north of Las Vegas, Nevada. We got here yesterday and we will spend one more night here. The US Air Force Thunderbirds do a lot of practice here in the area for upcoming airshows all over the US. There was a nice flyover in a Diamond-shaped pattern with 6 jets. but, alas, I did not have the camera ready. I did catch a glimpse of one plane on my phone. We have done the "sightseeing" thing here before, so we limited our activites to visiting some...

May 7, 2018 - Sam's Town Casino

The heat was just too much yesterday. It got up to 99° F or 37° C. Didn't go out last night. This morning, we wondered around "Sam's Town Casino". It seems you can't look or move anywhere without spotting a casino of so sort. The one disappointing thing was that all of them allowed smoking on the gaming floor. Tonight, we're going to take the shuttle bus in to the strip and get a view of the night life and lights. Just 2 more tourists. Should be a hoot.

May 6, 2018 - Las Vegas Blvd.

Typical tourists, we saved Sunday morning to take a drive down "The Strip." Typical tourists, we didn't charge up the camera and had to use Sue's cellphone. The pictures still turned out great for the middle of the morning. Can't wait to see it at night with a charged camera. We did drive past the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop from TV but couldn't get near the parking lot. The Strip is quite a sight... nothing but LED billboards from one end to the other.
