Mar 27, 2017 - Walker Lake NV

Leaving Tecopa, heading north we actually drove for a ways into Nevada before going back into California. It was easier than hauling the rig over the mountains. We had yet another place we had found before and decided to repeat. This is Walker Lake just north of Hawthorne Nevada. There is a BLM campground that in the two times we have been there now was pretty much empty. There were maybe five RVs here tonight. The sites are on terraces so everyone has a view of the lake. I took a little walk and did a couple of geocaches but it was very...

Apr 26, 2015 - Whiskey anyone?

Whiskey Flats RV Park in Hawthorne. Hawthorne is interesting in that it is the Army's ammunition storage location. The area is dotted with bumps in the landscape: underground bunkers of ammo. It is a military base and a very patriotic town. Other than that, not much going on here. No idea why the campground is called Whiskey Flats, but I bet there is an interesting old timers story that would explain it.

Rambling Rodericks

Apr 14, 2015 - Hawthorne,NV

We arrived at Whiskey Flats RV Park around 1:30pm after about a 5 hour drive from Pahrump. Nice Park that we have stayed at in the past. Winds picked up a couple of hours after we setup and the forecast was spot on. Winds increased overnight and this morning they are 25-35 with gusts to 45-60 so....we are staying put for another night and will head to Reno Wednesday morning when the winds are suppose to subside to 10-15. More after we get home.

Sep 16, 2014 - Driving Across Yosemite

Here are pictures of our gorgeous drive across Tioga Road in Yosemite. I had to drive the car because of a 45 ft. limit so most of the pictures are windshield shots. There was this huge Beast in front of me so it’s in most of my pictures. Tonight we’re in Hawthorne, NV. Tomorrow we’re taking U.S. 50 – the “Loneliest Road in America”.

Apr 10, 2014 - Eeezy peeezy!

I have been trying to think back to when we have had such an easy travel day. Very few come to mind. We have landed 194 miles up the road from our last stop and will spend two nights at Whiskey Flats RV RV Park in Hawrthorne, Nevada. The weather today was spectacular with temperatures in the low 70's, clear skies and no wind. And, best of all, the highways here are smooth, there has been very light traffic and the drivers around us have all treated us with respect. This is the very reason that we are going north through Nevada and NOT...

May 15, 2013 - Reno to Hawthorne, NV

We didn't leave Reno till 2:15!! But I guess that was better than the projected 4:00 completion time we originally got from the RV place. And we were both dead tired. Our lack of sleep wasn't just due to the bright lights in Baldini's parking lot. There were also the planes arriving and departing the airport (Baldini's is practically on the run way!) and the trains every half hour, the motorcycles and the parking lot loud speakers. Oh well, we would be on our way now. Once we were on the road, we called the RV park in Tonopah and they were...

While at Beatty we saw something we had never experienced ............. donkeys in a RV park! It was so different and we both enjoyed the adventure. Also we saw the modern day hippes they was just very nice kids. As for our day on the road - it was good. The wind was blowing but Ken handled the roads very well. After we arrived in Hawthorne our friends arrived and of course we had happy hour and then food grilled and eaten ..... such fun! So until the next time........ Have fun and stay safe! God Bless Ken and Fran

VNL Travels 2013

Sep 28, 2012 - Hawthorne, Nevada

We stayed at the Elks Lodge in Hawthorne, Nevada. We drove around Walker Lake, a lake that is dying because the water source is being reduced and the salt content is rising, similar to the Salton Sea in California, what a shame, we then drove past Hawthorne Army Depot, one of the largest ammunition depots in the US. We had a great time visiting with our fellow Elks.

Jul 27, 2012 - OTRA - NV - Hawthorne

After spending yesterday wandering around Carson City and getting some caches, today it was time to head south on our way back to Vegas. Tonight we're at the Whiskey Flats RV Park in Hawthorne , Nevada. Wow! What a neat old town...and non-town. One couple here have put out lots of caches, most located in the old, abandoned, torn-down town of Babbit that was originally built to support the more than 7,000 armed forces and civilian workers at the then naval ammunition depot. Since that time, the Army took over the base and now it's run by...

Apr 2, 2012 - Can't get there from here........

. I fell asleep before finishing this entry. Sorry about that! We had a very long day after being stuck behind a jackknifed truck for three and a half hours just north of Pahrump. We made it to Hawthorne safely after. I'll complete the journal this afternoon after the short drive to Dayton, which is near Carson City in Nevada. We will hold over three days there to let the next cold front pass by. To conclude: We started out from Pahrump at about 8:15 on our 270 mile long journey to Hawthorne and managed to get only 10 miles up Hwy 160...

Sep 9, 2011 - On the Road to Hawthorne, Nevada

After a good nights rest, we headed back up the highway.....our destination....Hawthorne, Nevada. We traveled up Highway 395 till we got almost to Mono Lake, where we took Hwy 167 to the Nevada border, that turned into Highway 359....which we took all the way into Hawthorne. We will be here just for two nights, then we are thinking of going into Pahrump,NV (if we can get into the RV Park there), if not, we'll head for Las Vegas. We did stop into the local Pizza Factory for dinner this evening & we asked the manager what there was to see in...
