Sep 14, 2012 - Illipah Reservoir, Ghost Town of Hamilton & Cave Lake

Out, about & checking out our surroundings. Illipah Reservoir is located 40 miles west of Ely on US 50. It offers camping, picnicking & fishing. Hamilton bagan in 1868 & started as a boomtown (which resulted in 25,000 people) most migrating to the area for the hope of mining for silver ore. Big scale production ceased in 1887, all the silver was on top & none below. The town elevation was 8,000 ft & people weren't about to stay to see a if real vein could be located. Hamilton was our second stop on September 9th. Located 38 miles west of Ely and 12 miles south of US 50, it is a genuine ghost town. While there are few homes and no major buildings remaining today, Hamilton was the first county seat of White Pine County. Prospectors discovered ore in the White Pine Mountains in 1865 and the rich Hidden Treasure Mine was located on Treasure Mountain in 1868.
