Sep 30, 2012 - Eureka NV

The Nevada portion of US 50 crosses the center of state and was named The Loneliest Road in America by Life magazine in July 1986. The name was intended as a pejorative, but Nevada officials seized on it as a marketing slogan. The name originates from large desolate areas traversed by the route, with few or no signs of civilization. The highway crosses several large desert valleys separated by numerous mountain ranges towering over the valley floors, in what is known as the Basin and Range province of the Great Basin. Prior to leaving on...

Jun 15, 2012 - Eureka, NV - Lonely Day

(Ron Writing) We left Fallon, NV this morning and headed east on US-50. It was a long day of driving and not many stops. We mostly just enjoyed watching the beautiful scenery as we drove along the “Loneliest Road in America”. There are only a couple small towns between Fallon and the Utah border and there is very little traffic on this highway. The highway is in good condition but there are some very steep grades in places as it crosses a series of mountain ranges. We had nice cool weather with a weather front giving us some clouds and...

Jul 13, 2010 - Second Day - 473 miles to Eureka

Day 2 - before leaving Page, Arizona, we rode to the Glen Canyon Dam to take photos and then rode along Lake Powell on the road that would take us to Utah. We saw the turn-offs to go to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, but alas, no time to visit on this trip. Another hot day of riding, but we have our cool vests which we soak in water at each stop. On the final stretch to Eureka, Nevada, we enjoyed light sprinkles to cool us down. Sorry, still no photos due to motel computers.....

Jul 7, 2007 - Sunrise in Nevada

Day 8 Odometer reading - 85273 This morning we woke up again early ready to attack the "Loneliest Road". Leaving at 4:30 am the sunrise from Ely to Eureka was not as pretty as yesterday's in Utah, it was pretty but there is nothing in this stretch of highway. That is 78 miles of nothing to see. Luckily it was dawn most of the time. When we arrived in Eureka, we received "Survival Guides" to Hwy 50. These are passport size books with information about each town along the Hwy 50 stretch of road. Turns out, the "Loneliest Road" title is only...
