Sep 13, 2017 - Groovin'

To quote the Young Rascals: "I can't image anything that's better. There ain't a place I'd like to be instead..." And on this Summer of Love trip, here are some of the things I loved this day: Hugs from the Backwoods Bunkhouse Babes and random spouses as I left for CA. Reading about the firefighters from four states and several MT counties who extinguished the Blacktail fire we watched over yonder hill. Learning that the Big Timber high schoolers are the Sheepherders. Vees of geese winging south along the Jefferson River, perhaps having...

Jun 4, 2017 - Day 1 Roseville to Elk, NV

Well, not a bad first day on our "Flying Monkey Adventure!" We didn't leave till noon as it had been an exhausting week finishing work and preparing the coach! We made it to Elko, NV so we were pleased with the mileage. Abby settled in after we made it through the pass as NV is mostly flat and straight. One thing we noticed for sure was the smoother ride with our new 8 shocks. Probably needed those a long time ago, but live learn like they say. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are still covered with snow and the snow melt is flowing. It really...

Apr 12, 2017 - Truckee to Elko, NV

August 12, 2017 No snow last night and lots of sunshine this morning. Casual breakfast with Leslie before leaving for Elko, NV. We were prepared for a very boring day but that was not to be the case. After getting petrol in Reno we noticed a symbol on the dashboard. I got the Sprinter manual out to try to identify the problem. It was an engine diagnostic message that had several interpretations that seemed to indicate a fuel, fuel injection or emission problem. Nothing was specific. The manual rambled on about getting immediate Sprinter...

Aug 21, 2016 - Elko NV

The first half of Friday’s drive was perfect. Great weather, we found the ever elusive tailwind, little traffic and smooth roads. Then we hung a right at Idaho Falls and the lovely tailwind became a brutal crosswind as we headed west to our home for just one night in Arco, Idaho. Arco’s claim to fame? In the 1950’s it was the first town in the world to get it’s electricity from nuclear power. Apparently, and as evidenced by the massive Idaho National Labs complex that we passed through, this area is big into nuclear research and has been...

May 4, 2016 - Elko NV Museums

Elko NV – On the road we saw a sign for the California Trail Museum. This is dedicated to those travelers who made the big trip in a covered wagon. There were a few life size replicas on hand there. I could not even begin to imagine travelling that way. Bumpy and bouncy, dusty and loooooong. I also don’t think I could get all my “stuff” in there! It was a nice museum though. Another museum we saw was the Northeast Nevada Museum. It had some interesting displays on the big silver mining boom. But one display I really enjoyed was a...

Jul 18, 2015 - Elko, Nevada

I am way behind so there are a lot of days and miles to make up in the next 3 entries. HOLD ON. On Friday, July 17, we left Salt Lake City as planned and drove to Elko, NV. Our previous driving experience in Nevada has been in the mid and southern part of the state. Northern Nevada is very different. There is a lot of ranching in the area around Elko, which is a good sized town. Bing Crosby even had a couple of ranches there in the 40s and 50s. Everyone thinks of Las Vegas when you say Nevada but there are casinos everywhere. Truck stops...

Jul 10, 2015 - Bonneville Salt Swamp

Had a good stop at the Bonneville Salt Swamp...swamp that is due to some rains that made it look like an ice pond. This gave me an irresitable urge to keep walking all the way to the speed flats 7 miles away, but for the call of the destination. It is quite a sight wet or dry. I ask as usual...why, God? I mean the Great Salt Lake doesn't look like this...and what do we need it for anyway? Must we have it just to drive in excess of 600 mph on earth? Just askin'. More rain which brought us a microburst which about sailed Big Green into the...

Jun 30, 2015 - Elko, Nevada

Once again the weather is the primary topic. Ross & Marge left Winnemucca this morning around 1000 hours and drove the 122 mile to Elko, Nevada where they are currently camped at the Iron Horse RV Resort. They arrived around 1200 hours and stepping out of the motorhome it was discovered that the entry step was broken. Ross inspected the step and found one of the bolts had broken and a number of the other bolts were loose. After parking at our site Ross plugged the motorhome into the electrical post and turned on the a/c because the...

Sep 12, 2014 - Wyoming to Nevada

OK, so we didn't miss the cold weather entirely. We woke up to frost on the pumpkin as well as the toad (towed [vehicle] for those non-RVers). Our poor little car was filthy from the drizzle yesterday but otherwise everything was fine. We continued to follow I-80 and went through Salt Lake City without incident this time. This was the area where we had a nearly disastrous blowout two years ago on our way home from the northwest. The weather was good although once you leave the Great Salt Lake, the ground is so continuously white that your...

Jul 3, 2014 - Day 1- Elko

After picking Jay up from work, we headed for Elko. We got there in 4 hours and met up with Josh and Katie Carson, and their family (Quincy and Kaiser). We had dinner and caught up with a lot of things, and Quincy and the boys played tag. Then it was off to the hotel to sleep before heading on to Salt Lake City.

Summer 2014

May 15, 2014 - Elko, NV

Thursday, May 15, 2014 This was a travel day. We left Salt Lake City this morning and drove 230 miles to Elko, NV. It was an easy drive on I-80 west along the salt flats. We saw salt settling ponds and a production plant that are part of Morton’s Salt’s manufacturing operation. There is nothing much here to see or do in Elko, so we had a lazy afternoon. We drove around to find the cheapest fuel stations with the best access. The girls played Mahjongg and I went alone to visit the Northeast Nevada Museum. My travel companions have had their...

Sep 24, 2013 - Elko, Nevada

We left Salt Lake City around 0900 and headed for Elko, Nevada a distance of 237 miles. The sky was slightly overcast as we left and the wind was beginning to pick-up. As we headed west the wind kept getting stiffer. We crossed the border into Nevada and as soon as we did the wind got worse. We took a re-fueling break and had lunch in Wells, Nevada and as we climbed the hill leaving Wells the wind got even worse. As we got closer to Elko the sky kept getting more and more cloudy and as this is being written the cloud cover is getting worse....
