Sep 5, 2013 - What Holiday?

Labor Day Weekend is over. Holiday weekends can sometimes be tricky for RVers on the road. Often, we don’t know exactly where we’ll be on a particular day and campgrounds are usually filled for the long three-day weekends especially in popular areas. This year wasn’t a problem. We found ourselves in eastern Oregon in John Day. It is remote, lightly-populated and not exactly a big tourist destination for most people. So we spent most of the weekend relaxing at the campground. We took a drive to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument where...

Aug 27, 2013 - Smokey

We left Likely early this morning. In fact, I think it is close to a record. We were on the road before . . . BEFORE . . . 7:00 am. Yes, folks. I was up early. I can do it if I have to. -- The sun was red this morning, an indication of smoke in the air. We have been monitoring the smoke situation in the Tahoe area. There are several fires burning in Northern California and Southern Oregon, but the main fire now is the one near Yosemite which is causing severe smoke in the area. -- We had originally planned on taking four days to get from...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Jul 18, 2013 - Back in the Silver State

I spent yesterday on the golf course. It’s the first time I’ve picked up clubs in about 3 years, but it wasn’t as bad a round as I would have expected. I actually broke a hundred for 18 holes and didn’t cheat too much. The course was pretty empty, but I did meet another lone player, Nick, who is from the area. He plays the course frequently and is in a league they have at the course. I’m not sure where all the golfers come from because it’s about 60 miles to the nearest town of any size to the north and probably 100 miles to the south....

The move from Mammoth Lakes, CA to Carson City, NV June 14th on US 395 was short (92 miles). We were delayed by construction work for 30 minutes near Carson City, but we watched some pelicans and other water birds in a nearby lake. We had traveled US 395 north to Lee Vining in 2001. At that time we stayed for 3 days in Lee Vining. During our stay we made day trips to Bodie State Park and Yosemite and also toured Mono Lake. When we departed Lee Vining in 2001, we went west through Yosemite National Park. So, US 395 north of the...

May 14, 2013 - Thunder Mountain

There was a weather alert for possible thunderstorms, and of course the usual relentless afternoon winds in the Carson Valley, so we decided we might as well take another scenic cruise up into the snow clad Sierras. The plan was to find some interesting spot below snow line for us to sit by a clear mountain stream or lake and have a picnic lunch and read our books. We headed up the Carson Highway, also known as California Hwy 88. The mountain road eventually crosses the Sierra Nevada, arriving in the old gold boom 49’r town of Jackson. Just...

May 13, 2013 - Carson Valley

We arrived safely at the Silver City RV Resort in Carson City. The “resort” has nice amenities, but it is right on 395 between Minden and Carson City and the traffic is quite heavy. Also, the wind comes up each day about 11:00 am and blows all afternoon and often all night. But it is a good central point for doing the few things on our list before heading north. It is quite a large RV park, but is mostly occupied by semi-perms and perms. Nancy met some of our neighbors and they are living here in a large fifth wheel because they had to...

Nov 30, 2012 - Navy Dive School Panama City Beach, FL

Posted: Fri 9:21 AM, Nov 05, 2010 Panama City - Recreational divers know the Gulf waters near Panama City as a hot dive spot, but few know that all U.S. Navy divers get their start at Panama City’s Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC), on Naval Support Activity. Over 89 days, young men and women - some fresh out of Navy boot camp, others with years of service under their belts - must pass grueling physical tests, designed to push them beyond their limits. They must excel in the academic arena as well, before they can earn their...

Nov 1, 2012 - Itinerary updated

2013 Plans are underway for travels. We have thoughts about going fly fishing in Belize. Or, maybe returning to Death Valley as it is not far away and we can quickly get warm and there is still much to be seen there. Traveling on short trips to Southern California, staying at different military bases and simply enjoying the warm, sunny beaches is a pleasant thought. The best part of being retired is not having to make a decision about anything today. A long walk in the desert with Lucy the Lab may be just the thing to do on this day....

Oct 20, 2012 - Ely to Carson City, NV

We had another beautiful day of driving from Ely to Carson City. No wind until we turned on the last leg into Carson City. We're staying at the Silver City RV Resort south of Carson City. It's a Passport America park & they give you 4 nights at the 50% PA price. We drove by Sand Mountain outside of Fallon, NV. Years ago when we belonged to the jeep clubs we went took our jeeps (put paddle tires on them to get thru the sand) to Sand Mountain at Thanksgiving. Cold but fun! We called Judi's brother, Dennis, to let him know we were here & he...

RV miles driven today: 203 Total Trip miles 6247 We will be staying in Carson City for three days before driving into Reno for "Hot August Nights". This is the capitol of Nevada an its name comes from the Carson River, even though Kit Carson was a big part of its history. It was also the site of one of the biggest silver finds in history. Gold mines were abundant in the 1800's also. The city has served as the capital of Nevada since statehood in 1864 and for much of its history was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the...

Jul 29, 2012 - Stinky, Stinky, Stinky!!

It got so cold last night, that at 4:00 A.M. we had to turn on the furnace. Brrrr...... It must have been in the 40's outside. We left the campsite and headed out for Bumpass Hell after going back to sleep for 3 more hours. Bumpass was an early prospector in the Lassen area who filed a claim on the part of the park with active hydrothermal volcanic activity. Bumpass couldn't find anything to mine so he took early wealthy people on horse back tours to the area. He proceeded to accidentally fall through the thin crust on one of the tours and...

Jul 24, 2012 - OTRA - NV - Carson City

Today was a "long driving" day...from Chowchilla, CA on CA-99 up to Sacramento where we picked up I-80 towards Reno, NV. Passed trucks of bagged onions and other loads of loose white onions. While in California, it appeared to be mile after of ag land. I guess we don't want California to fall into the ocean after all. Boy, did we drive through some beautiful areas as the road rose from 39 feet in Sacramento to 6100' near Truckee, CA. From there, we drove through what I consider high meadow areas that were just fantastic. I-80 crosses the...
