Jun 30, 2016 - A Trip to the Past

Today we decided to go to Virginia City which is nestled in the mountains about 30 minutes away. When we were in this area in 1983 we took the kids to an Old West Town. Both of us remembered it as Carson City, but when we got here we quickly realized that it wasn't Carson City, but Virginia City. This town still has original buildings from the 1850s. It has the feel of an old west town although it now has electricity and indoor plumbing. They even have what they call a "comedy" shootout at 1:00pm. We spent a few hours investigating the...

Headed West 2016

Jun 29, 2016 - Nevada State Museum

After a couple of days to rest in Lake Tahoe we braved Hwy 50 with its l o n g 6% downhill and survived. We are staying at Comstock Country RV Resort at the bottom of the hill. There seem to be a lot of long-term campers here...so many they have an award for "Yard of the Month". It was a beautiful extremely small space with plenty of blooming flowers and shrubs, but it seems a little silly in an RV park. We decided to check out Carson City this afternoon. Stan was especially interested in the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Unfortunately, it...

May 23, 2016 - Alabama Hills to Home

While staying in the Alabama Hills we explored the area. I was finally able to visit Manzanar National Historic Site, one of the Japanese internment camps from WW2 where people of Japanese descent were taken after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I've always been fascinated by some of the crazy notions that come out of war and tragedy. Even though it was horrible to think of people being rounded up like that and of the consequences that followed, we were pleasantly surprised at they had to try to make a bad situation bearable. I must read...

Aug 4, 2015 - Day 28

Welcome to Reno, the biggest little city in the world. At least that is how it is advertized on the huge neon sign that spans the main drag downtown. But before Reno we had to drive out of California. Northern California wasn't all I had expected. The mountains were beautiful, but there wasn't the lush greenery I associate with mountains like we have in the east. The mountain valleys were barren, better suited for ranching than farming. Driving toward the Nevada border, we crossed a vast valley similar to the setting for the movie...

Lay of the land

Feb 14, 2015 - Heading to Yuma, Arizona

Lately it has been difficult to think about traveling as our winter weather has been more like sunny spring days. Yet, it is nice to travel and see something new; so it is time to hit the road. Yesterday we were nearly ready around 1600 hours and decided to just wait till the morning. And, here we are, packed and on the way. Oh, let's stop by the Post Office on the way out. Check. Oh, look, I forgot to close the steps on the trailer. Push, shove, start over, push shove and they will not fold up. John comes to the rescue and discovers they...

Oct 2, 2014 - Home Sweet Home

We planned to visit reservoirs around Elko and the Ruby Mountains in Nevada. However, those horses were still pawing and begging to be allowed to run free. So after a short look at South Fork and determining the water is very low and full of gunk, we turned the ponies thataway. A couple hours later we were in Winnemucca. A nights rest, and another exceptional meal at the Winner's Inn; home was almost in sight. The next day John decided to give the Ford stallion a bath. While his back was turned some real, wild horses came into the yard to...

Sep 29, 2014 - Carson City to Reno

Day 3: Arrived in Reno @ 10am finding the Reno Airport I discovered it would not be open till 11am. We then decided to stay two nights in Reno @ the GSR Casino RV Park and hire a car to make it easier to get around. After getting my suitcase we went and did some shopping @ Summit Racing (that was really fun) and then on too a outlet store area in Sparks. That evening we returned to the RV for a quick nap then went on to the Casino for a buffet dinner, while we were there Mum, Uncle Peter and Uncle David lost some money.

Sep 3, 2014 - Carson City, Nevada

We had a little later start today. Yesterday was really a long day. The drive through the Nevada desert is not one of our favorites. Quite boring to be exact. The skies were very hazy almost the entire trip. The only scenic part of the whole trip was the detour they sent us through which was a very scenic valley. They were doing road work on the tunnel that is out in the middle of nowhere. We fueled up in Carson City and got settled into the Comstock RV Park which is just one block from Highway 50 going to Lake Tahoe. We always detour off...

Apr 10, 2014 - And Back to Nevada Again

Our first stop out of Bishop is in Laws, CA at the Laws Railroad and Historical Park. For a small town and an out of the way place it was a fabulous museum, although Buzz was a little disappointed in the amount of railroad memorabilia - the old depot was original and they had one engine and some freight and passenger cars, but that was all. The remainder of the museum was basically a depiction of the town around the turn of the century with each building a separate shop. A couple of them were especially interesting and I have attached a...

Jan 11, 2014 - 2014 January - The New Year Begins

HAPPY NEW YEAR - WELCOME 2014 Year 2013 left gently and as easily 2014 begins. Our plans are flexible this year. Thoughts lean towards spending some time at Pyramid Lake, Sutcliffe, Nevada for winter fishing. We may head out to camp late February and stay till early April. Joe has scheduled a fishing trip in Mexico with the guys late April. I will probably spend the time while he is away watching movies and eating macaroni and cheese. Lucy the Lab and will need extra long walks if I truly do eat and lounge too much. The other adventure that...

Dec 1, 2013 - The year in review

Sunday 01 December 2013 The year has been an interesting one for us. Not a lot of traveling, yet we did visit some new places. The early part of the year we headed out to Pyramid Lake near Sutcliffe, Nevada for six weeks of fishing. We stayed at the campground there and experienced many warm, sunny days of good fishing, hiking and geocaching. After returning home we started the kitchen project. While not difficult, it certainly is time consuming. Removing cabinet doors. Using a special product to scrub the wood, was the first step. Followed...

Sep 17, 2013 - Carson City, NV - Gold Dust West Casino RV Park

Well it took us five hours to cover the 228 miles from Redding, CA to Carson City, NV due to a couple of significant construction delays. It then took us another hour to get into our site as we first parked in a site their computer had marked as out of service and they made us move though we found nothing wrong with the site and another coach stayed in it two days later?? We are staying at the Gold Dust West Casino RV Park which would be a great place with a little more care and a lot more tree trimming and/or slightly larger sites. You...
