Sep 14, 2011 - Nevada

We found a really neat place to stop and camp for a few days - just east of Austin, Nevada on Rt 50. Aside from driving through the Nevada desert in the heat of September, it was a beautiful ride. The sunsets are just gorgeous.... we typically miss the sunrises!!!! This particular site is called Hickison Petroglyphs Recreation Area. Just a little tiny spot about a mile in off the highway on a dirt road. The rock structures and cave holes were all carved out by wind - just an amazing mix of natural carvings. Short drive today 150 miles along the "The Loneliest Road in America" to Austin, an old mining town that's all on one street. Did some store browsing at least there were only 4 mostly selling topaz jewelry. Stopping here over night, high temp today was 65 degrees and it raining right now at 5:00 PM supposed to be getting down to 36 degrees tonight - we are at 6,500 feet so that could explain the coolness.

We have been camped out in the Toiyabe Mountains just east of Austin, Nevada for the last couple of days. We did some quad riding yesterday and are feeling sore today. There are so many areas to ride in this mountain range. This morning while getting ready to leave there is snow flurries in the air. The weather "has" been beautiful, so we are leaving just in time. We had a beautiful campsite at the Bob Scott campground with spectacular views of the snow capped mountains. We are headed off to Lake Tahoe,Ca.

Jul 7, 2007 - Austin, NV

Next stop was Austin, NV. This is 70 miles from Eureka. NOTHING here either. Actually, Stokes Castle is here. We drove the 1/4th mile up the hill to see it. It is not impressive. I'm not even sure why it warranted a red dot on my atlas. We also caught up with John and Charley on this stretch of the road. They are in Montana now. Sounds nice and cold!
