Big Bend Excitement

May 3, 2013 - Cashton turns 2!

Cashton had a Monster Bash for his 2nd birthday party and Mom and friend Alyssa really made it a fun afternoon. Grandma Penny was in on all the fun from the beginning. At this age, you only need one guest, really, and that's your best friend Jacob. The boys were really busy all afternoon with inside and outside fun things to do. We were very excited Aunt Renee and Val decided to come join in the fun, too. Great Grandpa and Kay were there, too, along with Jacob's family. Lots of food, fun and time for talk and laughter made it a great...

Aug 31, 2011 - Time to Pack!

Today's record high of 103 degrees (was still 101 degrees at 6:00 p.m.) broke a 58-year old record! So, we were so glad for a full hook-up site as the air conditioning was on full blast all day as we began packing, putting "stuff" away, storing the window and tire covers, and re-hooking the bungee cords in the cabinets as tomorrow is moving day after 1 month at the Ozark-Branson RV Park. I also calculated how much we spent during the month which was definitely over our projected budget based on my pension (Dan's pension will start October...

Aug 29, 2011 - MO Sports HOF & College of the Ozarks

Missouri's sports memories and memorabilia abound at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield, MO ($5 per person admission) in a 2-story, 32,000 square foot building. The interactive displays were fun (face a major league pitcher, face in a NASCAR simulator, call the action in the Announcer's Booth, shoot baskets, throw football passes, and play a hole of golf). The "Legends Wall" honors famous Missouri stars, professional and college-level, and the "Legends Walkway" features bronze busts of the honored legends, full size statues,...

Aug 28, 2011 - Blog Day 2

Dan and I agreed on our name for the blog through My Trip Journal: Wandering Woodruffs. We also set up a g-mail account (wanderingwoodruffs@gmail.com) so that readers of the blog (hopefully there will be some) can contact us if they wanted to do so. Now, I just have to type up the daily entries that I've been writing in "The Travelers Journal" (including a record of all our expenses) that I've been keeping since August 1st or the first day of our fulltiming lifestyle. Dan will then have to go through his thousands of pictures and add them...

Aug 27, 2011 - Let's Get Started On Our Blog!

On this lazy and incredibly beautiful day, high 60's in the morning and low 80's in the afternoon, I began looking through websites of other RV'ers about their travels (what fun that was!) In doing so, I came across "My Trip Journal" which is advertised as one to capture your memories, explore the world, and/or develop a memory book. The trip journal is FREE with unlimited entries plus photos and videos can be posted in the entries. Due to the number of pictures Dan takes, we would need to upgrade to premium status ($99 per year) so that an...

Aug 20, 2011 - Lambert's Cafe

Looking for some good down home southern cooking with "throwed" HOT rolls plus sorghum, if wanted, and "extras" of "pass arounds" of fried okra, fried potatoes, macaroni and tomatoes (MY FAVORITE!), and black-eyed peas? Then look to Lambert's Cafe in Ozark and Sikeston, MO and Foley, AL! We met our dearest friends, Don and Denise Lutes, and Denise's parents, Dave and Bernice Murphy, at Lambert's today to celebrate Dave's 82nd birthday! Dave was born exactly one-week before my mother (but, God bless her soul, she passed away on January 17,...

Aug 15, 2011 - One Month of Retirement

Today is 1 month since my retirement! Time has flown by with 1) traveling to South Dakota to establish residency and obtain drivers' licenses and license plates; 2) preparing the coach for fulltiming; and 3) 2 weeks in Ozark focusing on the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Creek. As we learned that our workamping jobs at Amazon in Campbellsville, KY will start on Sunday, October 23 (until Friday, December 23), we began making plans, and then RV park reservations, for the period Thursday, September 8 (September 1-September 8 will...

Aug 11, 2011 - A Bad and Good Day

Have you seen the 2006 movie, "RV" with Robin Williams? If so, do you remember the scene during which Williams is trying to dump the contents of the sewer system and ends up with fecal matter all over him? Well, we didn't have it that bad; however, we did have an overflow in the toilet, sink, and floor in the bathroom. Yuck! It all started with an "odor", you know that "odor", emanating from the bathroom. As the gauge for the grey, black, and fresh water tanks at the "Control Center" indicated only one-third tank full, Dan decided to add...

Aug 6, 2011 - America's Night of Hope

As Dan wasn't feeling well today (too much sun?), I walked to the 4 antique stores in the mall behind the RV park. Although I saw lots of interesting "stuff", there really is no room in the coach, so I only "window shopped". I was pleased to learn that the Family of Christ Lutheran Church meets on Sunday mornings at the Stained Glass Theatre, next to the antique store. I then spent the evening watching the live broadcast of Joel and Victoria Osteen's "America's Night of Hope" at US Cellular Field in Chicago, IL sponsored by Matt Crouch on...

Aug 4, 2011 - Motorcoach Work

Motorcoach work today! Oh goody... 1) Adjust the satellite system; 2) Mount the Magne Shades on the front side windows (drivers and passenger side); 3) Install wheel covers to prolong the life of the tires' 4) Empty boxes of more "stuff" we had brought into the coach but had not yet stored away. (We definitely learned the importance of labeling all the plastic containers inside the coach cabinets as well as in the basement so that we know where everything is located.)

Aug 3, 2011 - "Cowboys and Aliens"

As it was already 85 degrees at 8:30 a.m., we decided that today should be an "inside air conditioning day". After finding the closest theater in Springfield, MO (10 miles away) and obtaining tickets, we saw the movie, "Cowboys and Aliens" with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. We also drove around Springfield to obtain our bearings. We returned to Ozark, stopping at Wal-Mart to purchase a small propane tank to fuel the cook-top and oven. As indicated yesterday, we later installed the Magne Shade (navy color) on the windshield. The...
