Sep 20, 2019 - Nevada, Missouri

We headed south on Hwy 15 to Hwy 56, then east to Hwy 77 and then Hwy 54 into Nevada, MO where we stayed at Osage Prairie RV Park. Really rough roads getting into this park and their interior roads. The reason for this stopover was to visit Cottey College. I belong to an organization of women called P.E.O. which is a philanthropic educational organization. Our mission is "women educating women" This college in Nevada is fully funded by our organization and we offer most students tuition scholarships. It is a women's college and one of the...

Fall 2019

Jun 10, 2013 - Nevada, MO

10Jun2013 - We are off to Osage Prairie RV Park in Nevada, MO. this morning. On the way we passed though many small towns the most memorable being Iola, KS. We decided to add it to our list of places to return to in future! It was simply a pretty little town with nice RV park on west side of town directly on 54. Quote by Gene to sum up the journey thus far: "Been driving on US 54 thru the center of the country for a few weeks now. Have seen some really pretty country and stopped in some great small towns to see the sites. Oh, and some good...

Oct 18, 2012 - Cottey College

Most of you know that I am a member of the P.E.O.(Philanthropic Educational Organization) sisterhood. P.E.O. owns a women's college in Nevada, Missouri, Cottey College. We have no loans and no deferred maintenance and we are very proud of this. It has always been a two year college but 4 of the disciplines have been approved for 4 year status and the first graduating class will be this year for the 4 year disciplines. The college is applying for a couple more 4 year disciplines in the fall. Great news! A few days ago I called and asked if...

Oct 17, 2012 - New oil & brakes, caught in a storm and cattle

We got up early and headed back 12 miles towards St. Louis where we had an appointment to have the oil changed on the Tahoe. What a great Chevrolet Dealership, they were thorough, nice and friendly. Fred has had problems with the emergency brake and wanted it checked. When they took the brakes a part the service manager came and got Fred. Took him out to the service bay to see the brake problem. So we replaced the rear brakes. They sure do work great now. And they were done 30 minutes earlier than they thought. We have found that the...

May 18, 2011 - Nevada, Missouri

We are now in Nevada, Missouri. This is a small town north of Joplin, Mo. It does not have a Wal-Mart. Boo-Hiss! We did a little sight-seeing between here and Chanute, KS. We drove by a town named West Mineral, KS and saw BIG BRUTUS. The museum was closed and it was raining so we were only able to get a quck pic from the parking lot. Big Brutus is the 2nd largest electric shovel and is a monument to the rich coal mining history of Kansas. It is over 160 feet tall and weighs 11 million pounds. Its shovel can load 150 tons in one scoop -...

Where RV Going Next?

May 16, 2009 - God Smiled on us today

We were having a wonderful day. The grass was green – the cows were contentedly grazing in the pastures – the road was good. We had even stopped for gas at the lowest price we had seen in a long time. I went into the RV to check for the address of the Elk Lodge when I smelled that most dreaded smell – hot rubber/electrical. I went out and felt the tires and hubs. The back tire on the driver’s side of the RV was ok but the hub was too hot for me to keep my hand on. Now what do we do. We tried to call the tire place that was recommended by...

Summer 2009 Travels

May 14, 2009 - Abilene, KS to Nevada, MO

On the 14th of May, we drove from Abilene, Kansas to Nevada, Missouri (yep, Nevada), only it's pronounced Ne VA da, with a long "a". Don't know how this town got its name, but it is rich in history of Civil War strife. Kansas was a hotly contested region between the North and South. Confederate Bushwhackers ambushed a Federal militia party on the town square and fought a battle through the town streets. The Federals burned the town in retaliation. Just don't think of Kansas as being involved in the Civil War. The town has a huge 3-M plant...

Fuehr's Tours 2009

Oct 23, 2007 - Nevada, MO

OK, off again headed for Nevada, MO to visit niece Tiffany going to Cottey College there. In addition we found the "Bushwacker Museum". Missouri was a State during the Civil War where there was some confusion as to whether it was part of the Union or Confederacy. Nevada, was raided several times by independent (non-Union nor Confederate soldiers) bands of self-proclaimed slave or non-slave advocates. Thus the title, "Bushwackers". The museum provided some history over that period. Part of the museum included the local jail which was built...

Catch UP

May 22, 2007 - Dorothy we're not in Kansas anymore

Good morning from Hutchison, KS. We are taking a rest day due to high winds, severe thunderstorms predicted, and rain. We are with Uncle David and Aunt Sandy who joined us on Saturday, May 18. Greg & I left Tribune, on Friday to head for Scott City. We thought we would beat the wind that day by starting out at 6:10 am. NOT!!! We had left from the B&B and felt quite refreshed after a rest day. We saw buffalo first thing in AM and they were b-i-g. We also saw several homes that were built into the ground. Not into a hill, mind you, but...
