Sep 1, 2011 - Visiting with my Mom

It has been a day to catch up on things that needed to be done. Of course I spent most of the day with my mother. She had a list of requests: Gayla: bake a cake; Glen: grill a pork loin. There are a few other things on the list which will wait until cooler weather. I also did laundry; and Glen washed the truck. My baby brother just stopped for a visit. He carried the mail, came home, started brush hogging on the farm, had a flat tire, changed it and more brush-hogging. It was 9 p.m. when he stopped and he hadn't had supper yet. You have a...

Apr 11, 2011 - Second Home Stop

We had a fantastic visit with our daughter Trisha, friend Jeff, and boys Brady and Tanner. Saturday we worked on a list of projects Trisha had saved for her dad. :} First was the purchase of and installation of a outdoor ceiling fan/light fixture on her outside patio. Happy Birthday, daughter! Glen also solved the problem of the gas blower not starting: replaced the spark plug. The back yard was also raked, fertilized, re-seeded, and strawed. Saturday night there was an early celebration of Tanner's eleventh birthday. We all dined at The...

Nov 30, 2010 - You will never guess where we are!

We have driven (the truck) to St. Clair Missouri. Glen's brother, Paul lives and teaches in St. Clair. Paul's youngest daughter, Rachel, is a senior in high school. One of Rachel's classes at high school is entitled "Modern Warfare". Several weeks ago Rachel and her teacher asked Glen to speak to her class...as a Viet Nam veteran. We are here for Glen to do that very thing. I am sitting in the truck at the high school parking lot while Glen meets Paul on his free hour--12:25-1:25. Rachel's class isn't until 2:25-3:15. I am not sure what...

Nov 30, 2010 - Presentation is over!

As indicated in the post earlier today, we drove to St. Clair Missouri to visit with Glen's brother Paul and his family. Glen was invited by his niece Rachel, a senior, and her Modern Warfare history teacher onto make a presentation about his time in Viet Nam. The fifty-minute class period went by quickly. Glen did an excellent job, of course. What was very striking is how young the class members seemed. Would that be a function of OUR age???? ha! Paul is a speech and drama teacher in the high school; Pam is a kindergarten teacher. After...

Nov 28, 2010 - Back in Central Missouri

Oh, my, where has the time gone? I do have a reason for not posting the past couple of days. WiFi service disappeared! Could never get back on line. However, we are now at my mom's....the "black hole" of cellular service....and at least for tonight there is wifi service. Friday Glen and I drove about 30 miles south of Adrian to Schell Osage State Wildlife Refuge. It was a great day....there were tens of thousands of snow geese, a few dozen mallards, four white pelicans, double crested cormorants, bald eagle, and the BIRD of The Day...two...

Aug 28, 2010 - Friday and Saturday

Rural Internet service is slow and cranky. There was another trip to the doctor with my mother yesterday. She received more medication and a shot to try to get the flare-up of arthritis calmed down. As of this afternoon she and I decided the swelling is receding; and, she says the pain is somewhat reduced. Friday afternoon we had a wonderful visit with my Aunt Beryl and Uncle Gene, two of the sweetest people. Uncle Gene has had many health issues the past three years or so but has not let that sour his disposition or curb his sweet smile....

Aug 26, 2010 - Family Chores

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood! We sat outside a lot today. The skies were blue, there was a slight breeze, low humidity with temps in the low 80's. Nice, nice, nice! Glen is such a good son-in-law. He ran the weed-eater around the yard this morning. Of course, Mom is very appreciative. This afternoon Mom decided to show us a couple of roads we haven't been on in years..and years...and years. There definitely has been an increase in houses along these roads since it has been over 40 years since we have been on them. Tonight my...

Aug 25, 2010 - Chauferring Duties

I drove my mom to the beauty salon this morning. While we were gone Glen washed the car, and started removing tar, and yellow paint by waxing the car. He worked on the car all afternoon. The project is done. My, what a difference in the looks of the car. The many miles of being towed had taken a toll from tar dots and occasional yellow paint dots from striping. My mom and I offered moral support and direction as we sat in our lawn chairs. I am sure those spots I pointed out Glen would have seen eventually! :} This evening my brother Mark...

Aug 24, 2010 - Family Errands

The first errand of the day was to take my mother to Urgent Care at the Lake (of the Ozarks). Her hands have been bothering her for over a week. She was diagnosed with either gout or arthritis. (my personal opinion: gout). The nurse practitioner said the same medicine would be used to treat either; gout is a form of arthritis. After two pills today my mom reports that her hands feel "a little better." There was a stop at the pharmacy, then WalMart, then Panera Bread--lunch and bagels(for breakfast). Have you ever had the Crunchy Cinnamon...

Aug 23, 2010 - You Know You are Back in the South When....

You know you are back in the south when....the waitress at the Mexican Restaurant asks "sweet or unsweetened?" when Glens says "iced tea, please!" No one in the northwest or Canada or Alaska knew about sweetened tea. We left Adrian MO this morning and drove to Bolivar, MO. We visited with Glen's mother, Wilma, at Parkview Nursing Home. She is in the same condition as when we last visited with her. Speech skills are limited. Mostly there is mumbling. The medical field may have figured out how to extend life, but not necessarily add to life...
