Aug 31, 2019 - Golf

I have not made much mention of golf in our travels. I am trying to play a bit more often that in the early days. This course (Lester GC in Duluth) was pretty interesting as a municipal course, that offers some splendid views overlooking Lake Superior. Well maintained and quite demanding, it is one of the few course that I would consider walking (fairly compact without great distances from one hole to the next). So I walked it! A few steep uphill treks got the heart pumping. Slept well that night!

Aug 30, 2019 - Sightseeing in Duluth

Seeing that the weather looked good for a Friday trip to Duluth, we booked a ride, first class, on the Scenic North Shore Train. Had a nice view of the area and learned about the history. The train and historical museums were impressive. After the museum and the train ride we walked over to the famous Aerial Lift Bridge where we had lunch at well-know restaurant.

2019-08-20.Minot to Duluth As mentioned, we have decided to cut the trip short to return to Pennsylvania to help Bob's mom after the death of Bob's stepdad, Frank. So, we left Minot ND and drove to East Grand Forks, MN where we stayed the night at the Red River Recreation Area again. This is a really nice campground as I reported earlier in the journal and our opinion hasn't changed. Many of the other campers on Sunday night had also been at the FMCA rally in Minot. The good news was that we had full 50 amp hookup so we could dump and put...

Jun 22, 2019 - Lake Superior #2 June 17 - 20, 2019

Apostles Islands National Lakeshore is part of the National Park system. It is one of several national lakeshore parks along Lake Superior. Since the islands are not accessible in an easy way – kayaking, canoeing or private water taxi are required to get to almost all of the islands. we decided to take a cruise to see some of the features. The cruise was about 2.5 hours long and I was not able to stay on the outside upper deck for the whole trip – Tom outlasted me. The day was beautiful but moving through air that is only 60 degrees at a...

Jun 16, 2019 - Lake Superior # 1 June 12-16, 2019

LAKE SUPERIOR – WOW I keep saying we are going to Duluth, MN but the destination is LAKE SUPERIOR. Just a little geography/info. Duluth is a city of 87,000 people that is on the border of Minnesota. Its twin city is Superior, WI with 26,000 people that is on the border of Wisconsin. We are staying in Wisconsin at a nice, locally owned RV park for 9 nights – our longest stay of the trip. This a vacation destination for Mid-westerners. There are lots of trails, marinas, educational attractions and dining/drinking locales. There is a casino...

May 24, 2019 - Duluth

I should have entered the address of the Lakehead Boat Basin into the Phaeton's GPS. It was a bit longer trip than normal for us as we drove northwest on I-94 and then north on U.S. 53. We had some light rain, but encountered more rain and fog as we neared Duluth. Since the GPS didn't know the boat basin, I cleverly entered the Fairfield Inn because it is next door to Lakehead. But when the GPS was heading uphill instead of down toward the water, I asked Sue to find the basin on Google Maps. We followed Google Maps directions through town...

Aug 28, 2018 - Minneapolis, MN to Duluth, MN

August 28, 2018 Martina was very fun with interesting dishes. Bob ordered a Chilean 2014 Sol de Sol chardonnay and Leslie brought a 2005 Achaval Ferrer Finca Mirador Malbec. We were able to catch up with the kids and learned that General Mills moves people into new jobs when they are out on a LOA. Celeste expects to move into procurement which she is looking forward to. We are also looking forward to the Dederer/Kweller get together for Christmas in Denver as we had done for many years in Truckee. Much longer time for Leslie and I to take...

Aug 19, 2018 - “Does this bus go to Du-lut?”

We drove into Duluth, MN on Saturday. Every time I think about Duluth, I’m reminded of a joke we heard when we lived in Minnesota some 35 years ago. It’s a Scandinavian joke ( like Polish, Italian, Irish, etc. jokes in other parts of the country) and many of them involve Sven, Ole, or Lena. Take you pick for this one when they ask the bus driver the question in the title. The punch line is “No, it goes beep-beep.” Lol. No? It loses something when you write it down. It needs to be done with a Norwegian accent and it gets a little funnier,...

Jul 26, 2018 - Day Trip: Duluth, Minnesota

What a day! “John, what do you want to do today? We like Duluth.” He nods his head enthusiastically. I head to the office. We book another night and move the rig. Our first site had a patio and swing. Our current site has a covered picnic table. All we need is electric. We travel to Duluth. Normally, we don’t head into cities. But, we like Duluth. I already said that. We find the parking lot for the Vista Cruise line. There is a tour at 12:30. Perfect. We walk to the Aerial Bridge. We walk across it, take some pictures and walk back. No,...

Aug 15, 2017 - Indian Point RV Park, Duluth, MN

It was an easy 148 mile drive along Hwy 2 through the countryside with great views. We crossed the Mississippi once more on our way east, we also crossed the St. Louis River once just a few miles before coming into Duluth. One town, a ways back was undergoing reconstruction of their Main St., they made a new temporary road for traffic around the town. It was strange. We were anxious to get to our space at the Indian Point RV Park as it is situated along the banks of the St. Louis River which drains from Lake Superior... It is told to us that...

Sep 24, 2016 - Moving Along

Duluth, MN We were sad to pack up and leave our home of the last week. The resort is beautiful and the two brothers really enjoyed fishing. Ron and Mary headed home while Jim and Sandi headed east - sort of. First we were seduced by a sign advertising a craft show and flea market. False advertising! There were only 8 tables with very little to offer. To console ourselves, we went hiking along a boardwalk through a unique conifer bog to check out some of Minnesota’s most unusual plants – insect-eating pitcher plants, sphagnum moss and...

Aug 15, 2016 - Tall Ships/Train & HH Rally

The Haulin' HitchHikers Club have two big Rallys each year. The annual meeting of the Haulin' HitchHikers/HHHH has always been in the Hill Country of Texas in April. The Rally committee decided we also needed to meet in the fall, before everyone heads to their winter homes. This year, the Tall Ships Festival, on Lake Superior, in Duluth Minnesota was the centerpiece of our fall gathering/rally. Thirty-five members/eighteen rigs attended. Burlington Bay Campground in Two Harbors, just north of Duluth, was our home base. Enjoy the pictures!...
