Pretty Cold last night. Around 40. We got up around 8:00 and had breakfast, got the van ready and went back to Menards. About 10:00 we headed off to Traverse City. Arrived in TC shortly after noon. Jul 15, 2014 - Bay City, MI - More of the Lake Huron Shoreline

(Ron writing) It rained hard during the night and kept raining off and on all morning and into the afternoon. Our day started with a delicious breakfast of waffles with the fresh strawberries and raspberries we purchased from a roadside vendor yesterday. As we approached the fruit stand, we had a strong whiff of strawberries. It smelled so sweet we couldn't resist purchasing a quart for only $3. A rainy day is a good day to do some chores. We did our laundry in Tamas at a very nice but very busy and crowded laundromat. Then we had some...

Sep 9, 2013 - Bay City, Michigan

After our weekend at the very tip of Michigan it was time to start heading south. We chose a park that offered an indoor pool and a very complete workout room. We are doing our penance and paying for the "sins" we committed at the Grand Hotel! We are still enjoying a 5 course meal but now it consists of apple slices, cheddar cheese, pistachio nuts, crackers & cheese spread and wine! We found an authentic 50's diner called Ruby J's and got down to the business of eating, once again! I ordered chicken fried steak with sausage...

Jul 14, 2013 - Tall Ships Day 2

Knowing that the crowds would be bigger and the lines longer, we set an early departure time. Sure enough, the crowds WERE bigger and the lines were LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. As soon as the shuttle deposited us outside the Wenona Park entrance, we parted ways. The Lighthouse Society was sponsoring a tour of the Saginaw Rear Range Lighthouse which is rarely open to the public since it’s owned by Dow, one of the area’s largest employees. Dow limits access to the lighthouse and has done little to restore it. The society is working with the company,...

Jul 11, 2013 - Tall Ships Celebration

Knowing that the gates didn’t open until noon, we left Gaylord about 10:30; that would put us in Bay City around 12:30, hopefully avoiding the line that would probably be waiting to get in. Parking was provided as was a free shuttle into town. The GM Powertrain plant was our parking area. The shuttle came almost immediately and we learned that the ships had not yet arrived. Later we found out that gawkers on the bridge had caused an accident that delayed the ships which had to anchor out in the bay until the accident was cleared. All that,...

Jul 14, 2011 - All Thumbs

Yesterday we did the thumb of Michigan. For those who don't know, Michigan looks like a mitten. The thumb part of the mitten was conquered yesterday with yet another beautiful day. We drove along Lake Huron and made stops in many places and parks wondering at the beauty of this part of the country. Notable stops were in Port Sanilac, Lexington, Port Austin and Bay City. We took a tour of a doctors house in Port Sanilac who was the first doctor in this part of Michigan (after completing a 6 month MD degree at U of M!). He rode his horse on a...

Jun 21, 2006 - Frankenmuth, MI

We stayed at the Yogi Bear Jellystone RV Resort in Frankenmuth, MI for 2 nights. Pretty little town - much like a Bavarian village. We ate lunch at a great place - the Frankenmuth Brewery. It overlooked a river, so it was very scenic. We walked through town checking out all of the shops. Unfortunately, there were 2 great German meat markets. Well, we couldn't pass that up so Dan definitely got is "brat" fix. Bought extra for the freezer too.
