Mar 27, 2011 - Update

3/6-3/13/11 Things are still going fairly well. Bob has an infection again so is on medication for that, but is off almost everything else. He just used his walker at the Iowa City VA so his walking is getting better; still needs to work on steps. Couldn’t get the CT scan done due to his kidneys not being 100%, so he’ll have to reschedule and do it by a different method rather than the IV die insertion. I’m going to start back to work Monday and see how that goes. 3/26/11 Back to Normal ! Well back is back to normal, driving the car and...

Mar 5, 2011 - Happy Birthday Rain

3/5/11 Happy Birthday Rain Went to a little party for my great granddaughter, who turned 1 today. She’s sure a cutie. Bob is doing better. He’s starting to go around the house without his wheelchair and walker (while I hold my breath). Has been getting therapy several times a week and is finally starting to eat some meat (are hotdogs considered meat??) Has an appointment at the Dubuque VA on Monday, and Iowa City on Thursday. Hope the weather cooperates as we have to be there by 8 am on Thursday so will need to leave here at least by 6…...

Feb 23, 2011 - Update

2/16 – 2/19/11 OT gal Jennifer came out Wednesday to do an assessment and said she would bring out a shower seat when she came out again (but didn’t say when). Her battery was dead when she went to leave so had Jack come over and give her a jump. Was very disappointed in her visit; expected her to do some exercises with him but all she did was show him a couple to do himself. Didn’t sound like she was anxious to return. Granddaughter Katie and her daughter Rain came out to visit on Thursday. Rain is so cute – she turns herself in a circle,...

Feb 15, 2011 - Happy Valentine's Day

2/14/11 Happy Valentines Day Lin came out and we got Bob into her car for the trip to the VA in Dubuque. They said to be there at 10:15, and we got out of there after 1:30 p.m. Didn’t see the doctor until after 11 and then they were very thorough with him. Went over all the meds, did an eeg (and he does NOT need a pacemaker or any meds; his arythmia or whatever they said is nonexistent – darn Texas medical people). They very painstakingly removed the scab from the bedsore on his head (hilarious to watch the doctor and nurse take turns while...

Feb 13, 2011 - Home and beyond

2/9/11 - HOME Well, things did not go exactly as planned. Bob called at 5:45 asking where we were – that he was sitting in the lobby waiting. I had told him we’d pick him up about 6:15 !! We were just loading up the suitcases and went to the hospital. He was sitting in the hallway outside his room, not in the lobby! We got his bag and loaded him in Ben’s Yukon, did a good job climbing in. When we got to the airport at 6:30 we were told that due to the plane/pilots getting in later than expected the night before and requiring a full 8 hours...

Feb 8, 2011 - Last night in Midland

2/8/11 – LAST DAY IN MIDLAND Bob had just finished his cereal when I got to the hospital this morning. I waited until about 9 and then went to find the case manager to get the med prescriptions for Bob. There were 4 sheets (8.5 x 11) but I didn’t need to get all of them. I sat down with the RN to figure out what they were for and when he had to take them, and which ones we thought he could do without until he sees his VA doctor next Monday. I still ended up getting 9 different meds, but most of them are just 1 x a day in the morning. Got...

Feb 7, 2011 - 2nd to last day!

Monday 2/7/11 Brrr-ice on the windshield today. But then later got up around 60 (I think). Just know it was warm and sunny coming in the window in the afternoon. I got an email from Lenae about a couple guys meeting us at the airport tomorrow to help with Bob. I called her to remind her that we weren’t arriving until Wednesday !!! Then Bob was thinking today was the last day and we were leaving tomorrow morning, so I had to burst his bubble. Not a good start to the day. He was just starting his physical therapy when Ben picked me up to go...

Feb 6, 2011 - Super Bowl Sunday

Sunday 2/6/11 Got to hospital about 8:20 and Bob was getting PT. He’s getting pretty good at walking around (with the PT guy holding the waist belt in case he stumbles). No PT this afternoon.. He was worried about the garage and outside faucets so I called Lin, and she said there was no water coming out of either yesterday so maybe they weren’t turned on like the other faucets. She said they would go out and check; they finally got out there about 4 or so and said everything was fine. Had her grab Bob’s blood pressure machine so we can...

Feb 5, 2011 - 3 day countdown

Saturday 2/5/11 3 more days to go. Bob only had physical therapy today (twice), no OT or speech. I think they are giving him PT again tomorrow also because they are trying to get him in condition to climb into a vehicle to get to the airport. The eeg, or whatever, didn’t show anything but the nurse commented that because his heart rate has been so low he might want to talk to his doctor about a pacemaker !!! But 90% of the time when they take his blood pressure its when he’s laying down and has just woken up… Lin and Jim went out to the...

Feb 4, 2011 - 4 more days

Friday 2/4/11 Another good day. Was really cold this morning – they’ve been having record low temps at Midland the past couple nights. Got to the hospital about 8:15 and stayed until 7 p.m - makes for a long day. Bob had his OT and PT therapies in his room again today. They brought a step, about 6” high, so he could practice stepping onto it, then turning to sit down on the raised bed. This will help so he can get into a vehicle (well, provided we have a step for him). He complained about having pain in his chest area so they did an eeg (or...

Feb 3, 2011 - Another good day

February 3 Happy Birthday to my sister Wendy, and Bob’s cousin Cliff. Sorry if I forget anyone’s birthday or anniversary as my calendar went back to Iowa without me! Bob had another good day (except for being cold all day). He’s confined to his room again because they think he may have the same infection again, so had to have therapy in his room. He did pretty good, and we practiced a little bit after the session to try to strengthen his right arm. I keep prompting him (well, he uses another word for it) that he needs to get strength built...

Feb 2, 2011 - Finally a plan

Wednesday 2/2/11 Happy Groundhog Day - hope spring comes REALLY early. What a cold frigging day! And they had no heat in the hospital until almost noon, and then it never did get warm. Bob and I were in the bathroom, he in his wheelchair and me in the shower chair, with the electric ceiling heater on. The cleaning lady opened the door to come in and you should have seen the look on her face! We invited her in and I think she was happy to be a little warm while cleaning the stool... Never did get really warm, but sounds like it wasn't warm...
