Oct 31, 2018 - Crossing Over into the US of A

Tuesday morning we crossed over into the USA. A few little hiccups, US Customs only took us 11 minutes, but right after leaving customs, the route we wanted to take through Detroit was detoured for construction. The fellow at the toll booths said with a slow drawl... 'nooooo problem' just like the guy from the TV commercial for Bad Boy's ---- Nooooo Problem. We seemed to manage for a while not too bad, second guessing the GPS, using the detour signs as well as our own instinct. Just outside of Detroit we took a wrong turn on the...

Winter In Phoenix

Jul 23, 2018 - Des Moines, Iowa

We are continuing to head west. Today was a 2 hour drive directly west to the Des Moines, Iowa area where we are staying in Grimes. Before leaving Amana, Jay did a short bike ride while Rocky and I got the RV ready to move and we took a long walk. Then Jay and I ran to the post office and grabbed some coffee at Casey’s General Store for the day’s drive. We quickly got on I-80 heading west and although there are MANY 18 wheelers on this road, we had a non-eventful drive to Grimes. We’re staying in one of our membership parks where we’ve...

Sep 5, 2017 - and we're off!

When I had my Achilles surgery in May, we anticipated having to stay close to home until the holidays. This makes our departure today extra sweet. We have reservations and plans for the winter, but this part of the trip is unclear at this point. We have made a reservation for Rocky Mountain National Park and plan to head toward Oregon to see the Colombia Gorge and Crater Lake, but forest fires have broken out in the area and we might drag our heels until the smoke literally has cleared. We have been reading that as the economy has...

Oct 6, 2016 - Is this Heaven? Hell no, it's just Iowa!

Iowa. State #2 on my 11 US states left to visit. Quiet. Flat. Windy. Did a tornado come and transport me back to Oklahoma?? No, it's just Iowa. Not much to see....pretty similar to Oklahoma in that respect. But, the Okies have much friendly (and have to admit, a bit more upper class) people, and of course, my family!!! Iowa? Corn fields...and lots of them!!! The drive to Iowa on Monday was very peaceful. It reminded me of driving through New Mexico...little traffic and great roads. We stopped in Oskaloosa and had our first stay in Gypsy at...

Gypsy Journey

Sep 24, 2016 - Spoiled by friends

I've had a lovely dinner and great conversation with Linda and Steve. Didn't stop to see any sights today but hopefully I'll take some soccer photos tomorrow. I've been treated to great views of a western thunderstorm through Linda's huge windows. I've missed seeing this! Sorry for the short update but visiting took priority and now it is time to sleep. Goodnight!

Sep 15, 2016 - Heading Home

After leaving California we headed to Lake Tahoe, and of course I was driving, and did we get any photos? No! Cause Gary was in charge of that. In fact I'm not even sure I saw Lake Tahoe, just a blur on the side of the road with the amount of traffic. We headed across Nevada, and stayed in a town called Wendover, one of the last towns before we hit the state line. The place was one casino after another. You would have thought the way the street was lit up that it was Las Vegas. This wasn't Reno, it wasn't Las Vegas, little Wendover, had at...

Jul 21, 2016 - Des Moines, Iowa

In addition to being the Iowa State capital city, Des Moines is also the location of two sites of significance to the extended Hubbell family. The original Hubbell ancestor in the United States (Richard Hubball) landed on the east coast in the 1640s, and his descendants are now scattered all over North America and into space (Hubble Telescope, right?). And, of course, there has to be a society dedicated to the genealogy and preservation of Hubbell/Hubble history. The Hubbell Family Historical Society (HFHS) is located in Des Moines, which...

2016-Adventures

May 30, 2016 - Back to Nebraska

Our last visit to Nebraska consisted of crossing over the border and staying in Omaha for 2 nights, so we could put the state on our map. We felt a little deceitful saying we had stayed in Nebraska when we had seen so little of the state, so we were glad that on this trip we were going to be able to spend more time here. Our first stop was in Grand Island which is another beautiful little Midwestern city. The RV park we stayed in was a KOA which we usually avoid as they tend to be pretty expensive. This one wasn’t too bad, and it was...

May 29, 2016 - 40 Years and Still the Same

Our plans didn’t work out very well for Memorial Day weekend. We had planned to stay at Adventureland RV Park where we would meet up with Leo and Peggy Bitteker. Leo and Peggy graduated from high school with Buzz, and the last time we saw them was at our wedding (46 years ago this June 20th). They have been full time RVer’s for 12 years, workamping at Adventureland Amusement Park every summer for the past 7 years. The RV park was full for the weekend, so we ended up staying at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. They have a huge campground with...

Jun 19, 2015 - Travel Day to Des Moines, Iowa

Friday June 19, 2015 Travel Day to Des Moines Mary-Jeanine wants to camp in a parking lot. It is cheap, quick, the companies don’t mind (Walmart or Cracker Barrel), and we are completely set up for it. But I am just not ready for it. I don’t know why. It just seems so…. industrial. Maybe tomorrow. In any case, we made it to Des Moines today and settled into a campsite for the night and figured why we are here. A big name in quilting is just around the corner. As Trump would say, they are “Huge”. So, tomorrow we are going to see both Fons &...

Apr 16, 2015 - And Iowa Comes in Last!

We left Omaha in the rain which continued for about 50 miles, but when the rain stopped the wind started so I think we were better off with the rain. We sit so high up off the road that the rain isn’t too bad to drive through, but for the same reason the wind is really tough. Instead of taking I-80 we took a side road which really made it easier as we could drive more slowly and not feel like we had the big rigs barreling down on us and calling us all kinds of names for holding up traffic. We drove through Ames, IA and then down towards Des...
