Sep 23, 2012 - Upper & Lower Mesa Falls....

After setting up camp yesterday we drove about 35 miles to view the Upper & Lower Mesa Falls. Larry & I were first here in 2006 and Mom, Joyce & I visited the falls in 2010. Other than Niagara, these are my favorite Falls. I love how close you can get on the boardwalks & viewing platforms at the Upper Falls. You can hear & feel the thunder and power below your feet, almost makes you want to jump in and try to ride it to the beautiful river below. Well, almost! Upper Mesa Falls is roughly 114 feet high and 200 feet wide. The average volume...

Sep 22, 2012 - Reed Point, MT to Island Park, ID....

Pulled out of the Deer Park Campground in Buffalo about 12:30pm Friday & headed west on I-90, destination Reed Point, Montana. It seemed like a good stopping point for the night before heading to Island Park, Idaho today. We arrived at our Passport America Park about 5:30pm & got checked in quickly. This is a small (19 sites) park but a very friendly place. Clark directed us to a western saloon at the end of town for a light dinner of wings, onion straws & stuffed mushrooms. Very tasty & I didn't have to cook! There is a train track not far...

Sep 7, 2012 - cleaning up after road construction

Donald washed the trailer today and I cleaned inside He really had a big job after that horrible road construction. He did a great job. That took most of the day. We decided to go back over to West Yellowstone to get some post cards and our McDonald's fix. Can you believe they don't have a dollar menu. I see this as gouging tourist. Came home and Donald study his map and campground books and I set outside and read. We have crossed Continent Divide three times in three different states. We need to get moving south because Donald talked to...

Don't wake me up

Sep 5, 2012 - Montana road construction

We seem to get out a little later every day. Donald says we will leave about 8:00. So to me that means a little after 8:00. Today it was 25 till 9. We only drove 175 miles but at least 10 of it was the worse road construction we have ever seen. Check out the pictures to see what our truck and trailer looked like after we got thru it. Guess they water the road down to keep the dust down but that just makes mud. We haven't taken many pictures today because the smoke is so thick that you can't see the mountains. We are just 14 miles outside...

Aug 28, 2012 - Mesa Falls ID

Another great day in Idaho; we visited Mesa Falls. The Mesa Falls are the only major falls in Idaho not used for irrigation or hydroelectric projects, and as such maintain a look and feel of nature undisturbed. At 110 feet and 85 feet, respectively, the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls offer equally spectacular views in a beautiful forest setting. Both falls can be viewed in full, with the area surrounding the upper waterfall enhanced with paths and viewing areas that make it easily accessible to all. Though only about an hour’s driving time,...

Aug 20, 2012 - Henry Lake, ID

We are still in the Valley View RV Park, in Island Park Id. We can see Henry Lake across the road. We drove around the lake and enjoyed looking at all the houses and ranches. We saw some pretty but unusual birds, cows and horses or maybe a mule. I have had the best time with this picture. I know some of you have seen it already, but I couldn’t miss putting it on the journal. It looked like a mule but had the markings if a pinto. We got some good pictures of the cows; they wouldn’t get out of the road! Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Aug 6, 2012 - Island Park, Idaho

We headed southeast today, traveling on the east side of Flathead Lake, passing Swan Lake, Seeley Lake and Salmon Lake (and many others), through Butte Montana then south into the corner of Idaho. Our destination was Island Park, Idaho just 14 miles SW from West Yellowstone, Montana, so we can tour Yellowstone National Park. Near Anaconda, MT we saw an old smelter stack in the distance. Completed in May 1919, it was the tallest masonry, brickwork structure and chimney of any kind in the world and it remains the world's tallest and possibly...

Aug 4, 2012 - Sawtelle Mountain Peek, ID

After a couple of rest day we were ready to go again. We were told do not miss Sawtelle Mountain Peek, We could see the mountain off in the distance with what looked like a round dome. We found out later when we arrived at the top that it is a Doppler Radar System. All threw the mountains were snowmobiles trails. That is a big thing in this area; we were told that they do get some snow in Aug. YES I said that right AUGUST!!!! That would be a blast to ride the trails in the snow! As you have noticed from my journal pictures that we end up on...

Aug 2, 2012 - Headed to Idaho

We had a great two days of traveling. We only drove about 300 miles the first day and arrived in Moses Lake WA safe, with no problems. We hated to say goodbye to this beautiful state. Washington has something for everyone. Snow capped mountains, green valleys and lots of farm land to desert like rolling hills. As we crossed the state I noticed the wide range in temperatures, the people on the west coast wore jackets and had no suntan. Then we arrived at Moses Lake WA. People had on shorts and had dark tans. Second day of travel took us on...

Jul 29, 2012 - Henrys Lake State Park near Island Park, ID

I moved from Massacre Rocks SP to Henrys Lake State Park [SP] on Thursday, the 26th. I went into Pocatello to get gas and stumbled on a Walmart so I bought my groceries there instead of Idaho Falls. I always feel in a hurry with the cats in the MH as it gets very hot in there, very fast. And it was a hot day. I also stopped at Petco to get a new cat box [aren't you glad I share all these facts!]. Pretty pricey, not like the Farm and Fleet one they had. Henrys Lake SP has very few trees and I don't have one. The lake is very pretty with...

Jul 17, 2012 - Yellowstone - northern loop

Another long travel day in the car - northern loop of Yellowstone (plus we are 32 miles from the entrance to the park). It was closest we could get without mortgaging the houses. Just unbelievable scenery - I hope the pictures aren't too boring but I can't stop snapping even though I know they pale to the real thing. Another stamp for my book today - I may have to do a count soon. One part of the loop would be difficult for anyone afraid of heights - I think Shirley may have closed her eyes a time or two. Today I think the Mammoth Hot...

Jul 16, 2012 - Travel Day

Travel day to the west entrance of Yellowstone - to stay on that side for for 4 days. We had to travel north through the park and exit the west entrance to get to our campground in Island Park, Idaho. We arrived and set up just before the skies opened - torrential. We went out after supper for animal patrol, of course, plus I had read about a scenic byway that started 3 miles south of the campground. It's main attraction was the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. At 114 ft and 65 ft respectively, they offer spectacular views in a beautiful...
