May 16, 2013 - Old Pu'u O'o trail

Thursday, May 16th -- Because our friend stayed overnight at Hale Ohana we were able to get an earlier start this morning. Our target was the trailhead of the Old Pu'u O'o cattle trail near MM22 at about elevation 5700 ft on the Saddle Road (Hwy 200) west of Hilo. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, before the roads were built between Waimea and Hilo, the Paniolas used this trail, among others, to drive their cattle to the waiting ships in Hilo. The trail climbs to 5800 ft as it passes over some old a'a lava from an 1855 Mauna Loa...
