Oct 3, 2019 - Nawiliwili, Kauai Island

3 October 2019 Cruised all night to Kauai and berthed at Nawiliwili early in the morning. Probably the most "rocking" we have had, but it was not rough. Just a gentle sway all night. Caught the free shuttle after breakfast and went into "town" to the Anchor Cove Shopping Centre. We headed down to the beach first, and then to have a look through the Marriott Hotel which is huge and has several guest towers. A beautiful tropical oasis is the centre piece, with fountains and a waterfall and some of the biggest fish we have ever seen. These are...

Oct 2, 2019 - Kona to Nawiliwili, Kauai

2 October 2019 Another very smooth cruise from Hilo to Kona. Had to look outside early in morning to see if we had docked or were still moving. We anchored off Kona and transported to town by a shuttle of four tender boats. All very well organised, with lots of guests heading into the town area or on tours. The tenders carry 97 persons when transporting & 150 persons when used as a lifeboat. Lots of interesting little shops in Kona and we enjoyed poking around the town area, watching local fishermen and having a bit of lunch. Back on...

2019 Bear Hunt

Sep 21, 2019 - Day 10

Today we leave the ship for the last time. The day starts early as we need to meet our excursion group at 8:50. We need to get all final items packed and ready to go. We got all our stuff packed and went in search of breakfast at the only game in town…the buffet. We got there and our worst fears were realized. Everyone was getting breakfast there this morning. We hunted for a table, finally waiting for other folks to finish so we could glom their table and went one at a time to the buffet. To their credit, they were able to keep things well...

Hawaii Cruise 2019

Sep 20, 2019 - Day 9

Today is our last full day on the ship. We have no excursions planned because the ship is staying in port until 2:00 PM then heading back to Waikiki. We have a free day on the ship. We slept in a little later, going to breakfast at The Skyline Restaurant at around 9:00 AM. We had a good breakfast, Cheryl having pancakes and I an omelet with a side of bacon. Nice meal. After breakfast we needed to do some administrivia in preparation for leaving tomorrow. We had been told to check our billing to ensure all was correct. I checked the bill on...

Hawaii Cruise 2019

Sep 19, 2019 - Day 8

Today is our final excursion. We will be exploring Kaua'i, We had a meeting time of 8:50 so breakfast was somewhat early. We chose the buffet, and had a number of different things. I had scrambled eggs and bacon, then some Cheerios, Cheryl went with waffles. After breakfast we left the ship at about 8:30 and went to the sorting area of the pier. Lots of different excursions starting at roughly the same time. There was zip lining through paradise, snorkeling through paradise, horseback riding through paradise, and our excursion, walking...

Hawaii Cruise 2019

Jan 25, 2019 - Nawiliwili Day 2

Today a tour guide took us to Allerton Gardens, part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. This estate was owned by the Allerton family and they did a fabulous job of creating this vast garden. Inside the garden are the trees where a scene from "Jurassic Park" was filmed - the one where the paleontologist and the children spent the night in trees. There's even a dinosaur egg nestled among the roots of one of the trees. We were fed a nice lunch and then shown a waterfall in the garden that is not normally open to the public.

Hawaii

Jan 24, 2019 - Nawiliwili

We cruised to the island of Kauai - the Garden Isle - for a 2 day stay. Our excursion today took us to the Waimea Canyon called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". We also took a riverboat cruise on the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, the sight of many weddings. Along the way we were serenaded with Hawaiian music. Our last stop was at Opaekaa Falls. Hawaii has a feral chicken problem. They are everywhere. No one eats them because the saying goes - to cook a Hawaiian feral chicken, place the chicken and a lava rock in a pot, cover with water...

Hawaii

May 3, 2015 - Lihue, Kauai

FOBTs, Here I am on the "Garden Isle" of Kauai, Hawaii. Actually, this island has many faces with different parts getting tremendously differing amounts of rain and thus having different climates. One part only gets 10-15 inches of rain per year and is arid while Mt. Waialeale is allegedly the wettest place on earth getting more than 460 inches of rain each year. We landed at the port of Nawiliwili, and the ventriloquist of yesterday evening's entertainment had fun with that name. Rather, his dummy, Mr. Long Nose, did. Nawiliwili harbor is...

May 6, 2014 - Kaua'i - The Garden Isle

Overnight, we sailed north from Kailua-Kona to Kaua'i and, by the time we were up and about and eating breakfast, we were sailing into Nawiliwili Bay. The strange name is said to be in honor of the wiliwili tree which once grew here. Kaua'i is known as the Garden Isle and it's easy to see why: very lush green tropical vegetation and lots of agriculture; it has its share of beautiful beaches too. It's impossible to do it all in one day in port so we decided to opt for a tour to Waimea Canyon. First stop in Hanapepe for a coffee break and...

Dec 24, 2010 - Kauai - Day 2

Well, since my curtains were closed I ended up sleeping until 11 o'clock!!! I was kind of bummed cause I wanted to get up and go kayaking by the waterfalls, Oh well! We departed Kauai at 1:30, so I just moved from my bed to a lounge chair by the pool. There was a lot of activity going on around the pool, so it was fun. I saw these two ladies working on a puzzle and I had to take a picture cause it reminded me of when I was little and would help my sister Colleen every Christmas Eve on her new puzzle of the year. I guess other families have...

Dec 23, 2010 - Kauai

Okay, today is finally the day! I am going skydiving from 10,000 feet!! So one of the staff members of the skydive company, Kristal, picked me up at the dock. While I was waiting for her, I saw a rooster crossing the road, I had to laugh and think of all the jokes we hear about an animal crossing the road. Anyways, I finally see Kristal and we head to the south part of the island near Port Allen. I made small talk with her on the way there and found out she is orginally from Champagne, IL. Anyways, we take the scenic route there. It was a...

Sep 28, 2006 - Nawiliwili, Kauai

Although Kauai is known for having the most rain in the Hawaiian Island chain, we had our best weather day there so far. We toured the Garden Isle with a woman I thought of as Rambo-ette. She was muscular and stocky and wore combat boots and camoflage patterned short shorts. When we first met her she chatted about helping her husband split rocks with a sledge hammer, carry logs down the mountain, and shoot goats during hunting season. But then she also talked about her extensive career traveling the world as a Polynesian dancer. (See the...
