Oct 1, 2019 - Hilo to Kona, Big Island

1 October 2019 Arrived in Hilo on the Big Island early in the morning after a very smooth night's sailing from Maui. Watched the tug do its job as we berthed, and then off to breakfast. We are only on this side of the island for today. There are lots of options for tours, but we decided to take the advice we got from a waitress a few days ago, and explore for ourselves on the Hop on, Hop off bus. Volunteers also set up a mini info desk, so we were given plenty of advice and maps. Seemed like showers were on the forecast for the day, and...

2019 Bear Hunt

Sep 18, 2019 - Day 7

Today our ship moved to the other side of the big island of Hawaii. There was just one difference. Due to port limitations, our ship could not dock. Instead the ship anchored a distance off the island, and we used tender boats to get to the dock. Tender boats are smaller boats that seat just under 100 people and can get into the docks. We transferred from the ship to one of these tender boats, sailed to the port, then got off at the pier. Interesting change of pace. Interesting, not any more fun. We met our tour guide/driver and headed out....

Hawaii Cruise 2019

Jan 23, 2019 - Kona

Overnight we sailed to the other side of the Big Island to Kona - the home of coffee that will keep you awake for days. Kona does not have a port, so our ship anchored offshore and we tendered into shore to catch a catamaran for a ride along the coastline. We saw where Captain Cook first visited this island in Kealakekua Bay. We were served a nice lunch and treated to a great 3 hour trip. On the return trip the crew had fishing lines trolling behind the boat. Simultaneously 2 of the lines hit and the crew were rewarded with 2 nicely sized...

Hawaii

Jun 28, 2013 - Last day in Hawaii

We don’t leave Kona until 10:45 tonight, so we decide to take another trip up the coast. We go north toward the airport and stop at the Kona Mountain Coffee shop for – what else? – coffee – and cookies and free samples. Then we go further north to Honokohau Marina, part of the Historical National Park. Great scenery again with huge waves coming into the shore. From there we drove up to Lapakahi State Historic Park where they are restoring a fishing settlement that dates back more than 600 years. Very interesting landscape and noted to be...

Barb's Retirement

Jun 22, 2013 - Hapuna Beach

Today we visit Hapuna Beach State Park north of Kailua-Kona. The landscape on the western side of Hawaii is very barren - entirely volcano lava with a few straggly trees and some imported tall grass. We learn later that there are two types of Hawaiian lava: Pahoehoe" has a smoother and ropey surface whereas "a'a" is rough and jagged. The lava covers the entire land to the ocean and as a result, there are few sandy beaches on the Big Island. Hapuna Beach is rated as the largest white sand beach on the Island. It's windy today, so our stay is...

Barb's Retirement

Jun 4, 2013 - untitled at 29

What an exciting day! Gene and Steven went fishing on the Fire Hatt boat. Yes just the two of them. They were only out about an hour when Steven hooked a marlin! He was able to reel it in. He told me his hand was cramping but he did not care. It was about 250 pounds. I do not have those pictures they are on genes camera so maybe later. Within the next hour gene hooked another marlin, about 400 pounds, but she managed to get off.;(. Steven had the time of his life that day! When they returned to port Steven was thrown in the water since he...

We where up early to fly to the big island. Once here we found where the guys where going to go fishing tomorrow then went exploring a little. We went out to the place of refuge. It was there we got to see the honu's(green sea turtles) we also saw puffer fish, an eel, sea urchins, and other fish that we did not know. Steven really wants to go snorkeling now.

Aloha, In case anyone has noticed, we have not made it to the Volcano National Park. The kids did not seem to thrilled about going. The drive is about 3 hours to get there. So it would be a long day. They said the lava is still flowing but not into the ocean. The next few days are supposed to be cloudy and rainy over on that side of the island. So those are some of the reasons for not going. We will just enjoy the sun and beaches on this side of the island. I guess this means Octi and I will need to come back for our 25th Anniversary. It...

Mezin Hawaii 2012

Jul 12, 2012 - Wednesday - July 11th

Today, we hung around the Muana Lani and Waikola Village area. We went to another resort area called the Waikola Village. They have the Queens and King shops similar to a Partridge Woods and had a farmers market there today. We got some homemade jellies, macadamia nuts and sampled some honey. I bought a Hawaiian pineapple (small) and it is the sweetest pineapple I think I ever had. It is delicious. Also bought some Hawaiian bananas which are about 1/2 the size of regular bananas and are sweeter than a regular banana. Again - Yummy. I made...

Mezin Hawaii 2012

Jul 12, 2012 - Thursday - July 12th

What a fun day today! We all decided this was the best day. We went on the Catamaran snorkeling boat ride today. It was about 4.5 hours long. We boarded at the pier in Kona. They had a nice breakfast buffet and for lunch grilled burgers, hotdogs, chicken burger, etc. Food was great. The water is unbelievable. I can not get over how crystal clear and turquoise blue it is. The snorkeling reef was anywhere from 25 feet to 50 feet deep. The boat was so clean and they had nice snorkeling equipment. One of the better tours. On the way out to the...
