Oct 15, 2018 - Wintering in Venice FL

NEW ENTRY: I know, I know, I have been remiss in updating the blog! And now for the task of updating. We traveled south from Montgomery, AL, with stops in Jacksonville, FL (Arthur and Holly Bond & Family), and Seminole,FL (Patti's cousin), arriving in Venice on October 15th. This is the first time we have stayed anywhere for more than a month, as we signed up for six month site at Florida Pines RV and Trailer Park. We were pretty active: John playing more golf than usual while Patti pursued real estate opportunities. More on that at a...

Mar 31, 2017 - On the Way to Florida

We left home on March 9 and spent 2 days driving to Raleigh, NC. A little out of our way. The reason for the detour was a chance to see The Leafs play. Inexpensive tickets, 10 rows off the ice behind the Carolina bench. Next day to Ridgeway, SC. This is where we store our fifth wheel. No use in hauling it back to Canada when we spend 5 months at the cottage. Spent a couple of days getting the rig ready. Weather was cold. -2 at night. Then headed to Myrtle Beach. Ocean Lakes Campground. HUGE. Spent a week there enjoying the tacky tourist...

Nov 15, 2015 - Chalk Art Festival

I never thought I'd get near a place where artists create 3D pictures on the ground but I did today! I found out that Sarasota has had this festival for 8 years before this one. It was moved to the Venice airport and to a street in the city last year. I didn't make it to the downtown portion of the pavement art, but maybe I will get there tomorrow afternoon. Hundreds of artists from around the world come here to participate in the festival. This year there was a Pavement Music Festival! There are vertical walls where seniors can paint,...

Sep 18, 2014 - Lakeland to Venice

Arrived at Carol's at noon just as planned. Easy drive and had time to stop at Publix to pick up ingredients for a pasta dinner. I found my friend to be in a more fragile state than expected - maybe comfort food will help. We went for a quick lunch and then a drive to the waterfront. Looking at the water is so relaxing. We sat in the car - quietly - for a time before I drove back home. I started dinner while Carol napped. At 6:30 we ate heartily and prepared to watch The Roosevelts on TV. Will judge tomorrow how long I should stay ( or am...

Feb 19, 2014 - Pool Party!

There was a party today at Rambler's Rest RV Resort. It was listed as a "resident appreciation party". It was at the pool area from 1:00 to 4:00 and was well attended. Of course, whenever you advertise free food and drinks, they will come! They even had a steel drum band playing poolside. It reminded me of tropical island resorts that we have visited. Lots of fun. They even had door prizes. It was a beautiful warm day and I will leave you with the words of John Denver: "If I had a day that I could give you, I'd give to you a day just like...

Feb 14, 2014 - Rambler's Rest RV Resort

Today we are taking you on a tour around the park where we have been for the month of February. You will see our site, which has been our "home away from home" for the month. We have quiet neighbors and trees for shade. Your will also see a few other sites in the park. The majority of the park is park-model trailers that have permanent or semi-permanent residents. They have a few RV areas in the park and a lot of RV are tucked in between the park models. The residents are all very friendly and welcoming. A lot of them used to be transients...

Feb 10, 2014 - Old friends and beaches

One of our reasons for choosing Venice as one of our base camps was the many "old" friends that we have in the area. My brother lived here for years and it seems to be a mecca for New-Englanders. We caught up with our friends, Pop and Andie the other day and met them for lunch. Pop does not really own the restaurant that we chose but it was a good choice. Right on the Intracoastal Waterway and we were able to watch the boats cruising up and down the canals while we enjoyed our lunch. Today we spent a good part of the day on Blind Pass...

Nov 22, 2013 - Sentimental Trip to Venice

On our last day at Punta Gorda we drove north to pay a visit to Venice. It holds a lot of great memories for me - you see my grandparents retired here in 1958 from Illinois. We were living up in the San Juan Islands of Washington State at the time, but that didn't stop us from taking family trips to visit my grandparents in Florida. Incredibly, we made the 3700 mile trip by car. My dad had five weeks of vacation so he'd order up the trip kits from AAA and off we'd go. The fortunate thing for me was they I'd get to stay the summer with my...

Apr 28, 2013 - A Day in Venice, FL with Joan and Bill

We spent the day with Eileen's long-time friend, Joan, and her husband, Bill. Bill has recently restored the family 1951 Packard and generously took us for a ride around Venice, FL. We got a kick out of the surprised looks, "thumbs-ups," and admiring stares of the passersby. We stopped at a jetty, where we spotted a manatee, had dinner at a wonderful marina-side restaurant, and visited the beach at sunset where Eileen learned how to find sharks' teeth.

Mar 28, 2013 - Geithmans Family RV

We moved once again to our cousins home in Englewood near Venice. The Geithmans are very gracious to have us back to their wonderful home. We’ll attend Easter Sunday church services with them. Otherwise, this stop is just a hangout stop to continue getting to know our newly found relations and probably eat too much. With this posting we just passed 7K photos An update has been posted for www.purposefulrving.blogspot.com

Feb 20, 2013 - The Geithman Family RV

We had a great 85 mile drive to Englewood on the Gulf Coast and the beginning of our week visiting with 2 sets of cousin in-laws of Rebecca’s. We met these “cousins” for the first time last Sept while we were in Wisconsin. We parked in their front yard on the circular drive way. This afforded us a great view of the beautiful landscaped front yard. That evening seven of us went to dinner together. We caught up on times gone by and other such things. Our gracious hosts opened their home to us, fed us well and gave many great suggestions for...
