Nov 3, 2019 - Highland Hammocks SP Sister Trip 11-1 to 11-3-19

This was a sister trip, hosted by Sally, and some of my friends like Cathy LaCour were there. Giselle was listed as coming but she must have cancelled since I didn’t see her. Mary who plays the Uke and has the red and white Tab was there, and Sally’s Banana Split Tab was there. I met Janet, who tented, MaryLou who has a small silver Tab, and a bunch of other girls whose names I will have to sort out when I get on the sister’s site and send them friend requests.. I was only able to go Friday, Sat, and Sun even though I had originally...

Apr 24, 2019 - Going to Highland Hammock State Park

I went to my doctor and got a ultrasound and he did 4 biopsy, I shall go back in May to see "WHAT'S UP". So we wanted to camp for a few days before I go see the doctor, so we went over to Sebring , Florida to camp at Highland Hammock State Park. We did some Geocaching on the trails in the park and got to see the CCC building with all the displays and pictures of the CCC days from 1938-1942. On the way driving to Sebring we got to visit with a few "LOVE BUGS" as you can see on the truck. The acid from the love bugs on the paint can take the...

Mar 2, 2019 - GEOCACHING EVENT

We went over to Sebring , Florida for a Geocaching Event at Highland Hammock State Park. We saw a beautiful full size bird house in a tree. The front opens easy enough and what you'll find inside is a small Etch-a-sketch, you must follow the directions to " draw out" the combination that will open the door to the log book area. It took us a while to be able to use the Etch-a-sketch to get the combination that would open the door to the log book. We did have a nice area under a shade tree to rest while working to get the...

Apr 18, 2017 - Sebring, FL

I drove about 130 miles up the spine of FL (Rt 29/27) to Sebring, FL and pulled into the local hospital. Stopped at the ER and spoke with security which directed me to a nice quiet spot for the night. I have found that for those times when you just need a place to sleep and don't need the comforts of a campground (pools, electricity, water etc) that a hospital in a small/medium town is a good place to "camp" for the night. Their parking lots are big and empty out fairly early in the evening (as opposed to a truck stop or Walmart, etc). They...

Hello Everyone, Today we visited Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, FL. It is a wonderful state park with excellent hiking trails all suspended over the Florida swamps! These suspended hiking trails were built in the 1930-40's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. This is a great place to camp and hike thru the woods on very interesting trails! Oct 19, 2015 - Going To Highlands Hammock

We our going to stay over a few days at Highlands Hammock State Park near Sebring , Florida. Camping a few days and walking the trails in the park , looking for those ammo cans and small containers out in the woods. This is the ending of our three month trip from up north. We got in the low front and the weather from the hurricane that hit Charleston , SC , just came on home after eight days of rain. Good thing that we left when we did from Charleston , because of the high water flooding the town. Now we can finish the end of the trip by...

Mar 14, 2015 - Leaving Sebring

Well I havent posted for a while. On Jan 25, we decided to pull out of Highlands Hammock State Park. Never thought we would do this. But it became unbearable. The campground was noisy, the campers unruly, would not follow the rules and the park amangement was hesitant to enforce the rules. We left the park with the intention of taking some time off and possibly returning in a few weeks. After just a few days in Tanglewood RV Resort, we decided to extend our stay. So quiet, so peaceful. We have been here for 7 weeks and hate to leave but we...

Feb 9, 2015 - More SCCA Club Racing

I spent the day at the race track watching the amateurs drive around the 3.74 mile road course. By the time I got back to Winnie I was too tired from the sun and walking the track for different vantage points to post.I walked about 7 miles according to my pedometer. Sebring International Raceway is located next to the Sebring Regional Airport. Sebring started as a United States Army Air Forces training base, Hendricks Army Airfield, and from 1941 to 1946 pilots learned to fly the B-17 Flying Fortress's there. After the war, aeronautical...

Feb 7, 2015 - Short Drive

We made a short drive north today to Sebring, FL. I wanted to visit Sebring International Raceway this week end. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is having some club races at the track today and tomorrow. I was here a couple of years ago for the practice sessions for the 12-hour IMSA Race, the professional circuit for Prototypes (Audi, Aston Martins, Porsches) and GT cars (mainly Corvettes, Porsche and BMW's). We're also having a hard time finding a place to stay over by the coast. The snowbirds have filled most of the RV parks over by...

Dec 2, 2014 - Thanksgiving at highlands hammock state park

Highlands Hammock State Park is located in Sebring, Florida. "The park opened in 1931 and was one of the first florida state parks and is an example of the benefit of grass roots public support for environmental preservation". It became a CCC work camp in 1934 and the state's CCC museum is located here today in the building built by those young men for their recreation hall. The park is spread over 9,000 acres and contains 5 different Eco systems with 9 short trails, a paved biking trail and a back roads bike trail. The park runs an...

Nov 26, 2014 - The beach lady of American beach

We drove from Amelia island to Sebring yesterday in a serious rainstorm, lightning and thunder crashing one atop the other. We arrived at highland hammock state park and after a 10 hour trip were greeted by the ranger with the news that there is a young female black bear frequenting the park and our campsite is on her route from one dumpster to another. They are working hard to discourage her. And our checkin packet included instructions on how to help break her scavenging habits. We have managed to spend 9 months on the road without a...

Oct 24, 2014 - A Walk in the Swamp

We moved on to Highland Hammock State Park in Sebring. This is where Anne and her brother were born and she wanted to check out her first home (which is still in use as a rental property). We had another slide-out problem here, which we finally got corrected. Before we left, Anne managed to get in a walk in the Park's swamp area. I guess you can't visit Florida without spending some time in a swamp. Anne's pictures speak for themselves. The ark was full of kids celebrating an early Halloween.
