Apr 24, 2018 - camping at Myakka State Park

this year, I went to Myakka with others from Carefree. Karen Symmes headed north afterward, Nels was only there one night while Sue was there for two nights. Cynthia & Julie headed to their summer home in Taos, NM afterwards, but Lynda & Gill, Deb & Betty, Pauline, Joan & Barb, and I went back to Carefree on Thursday. We got to camp on Sunday (except Joan & Barb who rented a cabin from Monday through Thursday) and I hosted dinner because I had leftover macaroni salad, baked beans, sausages, and hot dogs from the fundraiser held in Carefree...

Dec 28, 2017 - Pirates In My Life

There has always been a life-size pirate in the guest room at Debbie Downs's house. She bought it from the Buccaneer Restaurant on Longboat Key when it closed. On more than one occasion it has scared me to death when I've forgotten that he's in the room with me. This week Debbie was asked to make a treasure chest for a scavenger hunt for a friend's grandchildren. Of course she got in the spirit. She found the perfect trunk at the Goodwill store and went to work. You can see the results in the photos. After watching Debbie create the...

Dec 17, 2017 - Seasons 52 Christmas Dinner

Almost as soon as I arrived in Sarasota for my Christmas visit, I was spirited off to Seasons 52 for dinner with Debbie and Carolyn at University Town Center Mall. I know it sounds strange, but I lacked proper shoes for the Christmas outfits Debbie had planned for us. I borrowed a pair from Joan Verizzo and you can see the result. They fell apart all over the interior of the car and in the restaurant. What a night.

May 4, 2017 - Letterboxing days

After getting a new passenger airbag (a recall item that finally came in for my car), I spent the rest of Wednesday and all of Thursday looking for letterboxes in many of the parks between Venice and Sarasota. The temperature both days got up to the low 90s and it was humid, but I just had to pursue my hobby. I visited the rookery behind the police station in Venice and found that the Audobon Society now has a building there. We can now walk all around the lake that has a little island in the middle of it that many wading birds come to have...

Nov 12, 2016 - Now To Spend Time in Sarasota

Back to home base until my December departure for Ecuador. Debbie picked me up at the airport and as we ate breakfast in downtown Sarasota, we watched a demonstration at Five Points. It's been only a few days since the election returns are in: Donald Trump was elected President of the United States.

Oct 25, 2016 - As Seen on Alligator Alley

I stopped for gas while driving from Ft. Lauderdale to Sarasota on I-75. This section of the interstate goes west across the state through the Everglades and is called Alligator Alley. The convenience stores and tourist attractions are owned by the Seminole Nation. There were some quirky souvenirs for sale. I saw both airboat attractions and "Panther Crossing" signs along the way.

Aug 17, 2016 - Home Sweet Home

The drive home was uneventful except for the fact that when we went to a gas station to fill up, the pump didn't work. We went to another station and our two Visa cards, which just happen to be from the same bank, were locked. We came up with enough cash to pay our $140 gas bill and then Jerry called to find out what happened. Apparently their efforts to guard against fraud work maybe just a little bit too well. The station attendant tried running the card Jerry gave him and it didn't work. Both cards were blocked! Everything is fine now...

May 2, 2016 - Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar

Here's what I do to pass the time when visiting Florida. I shop at Goodwill, Salvation Army, The Women's Exchange and other thrift shops to see what I can buy to bring back to Ecuador. Shoes are my number one priority. This time I also found a painting, sequined dress, and clock. One of my favorite places to dine in Sarasota is Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar. Debbie and I enjoyed peel and eat shrimp and gallons of iced tea.

Apr 30, 2016 - Dyeing Eggs with Silk Neckties

Never afraid of a kitchen experiment, tonight Debbie, Carolyn, and I decided to try this crafty method for dyeing eggs. We bought patterned silk neckties at Goodwill and wrapped each egg with a different piece of a silk tie. Then we also wrapped each egg in white fabric and tied them tight. Finally, we boiled them for 30 minutes in a pan of water to which a quarter cup of white vinegar had been added. After the eggs cooled and we unwrapped them, the results were amazing. It's not the Easter season but maybe you can file this away and use it...

From the art exhibit brochure: ALAIN J.L. Huin A Day at the Beach: Nothing to Hide Educated in France, Alain Huin has been at the forefront of international design for over 40 years.
