Oct 14, 2018 - Cultural notes

I started to notice Dollar General a couple three states ago. They are usually on the edge of town, perhaps just over the city limits. I suspect they are located on the cheapest available building lot to keep costs down. They seem to function like a mini Wal Mart: low prices and convenient hours with plenty of free parking. I was disappointed to find that most items cost more than a dollar. My only Coke and snack combination this trip came from a Dollar General on US 19 southbound from Crystal River. I plan fewer Dollar General stops from...

Jan 9, 2018 - Dale Chihuly Glass Gallery

The Chihuly Collection at the Morean Arts Center is a permanent gallery featuring 18 installations spanning several of the artist’s most popular series. This exhibition is the first time Chihuly’s artwork has been displayed in a facility designed specifically to complement the artist’s installations. Dale Chihuly, born in Tacoma in 1941, is now world famous with innovative blown glass installations from Venice to Jerusalem to Las Vegas. In 1976 an automobile accident left Chihuly blind in one eye, and thereafter he was dependent on...

Jun 30, 2017 - Returning - NC, GA, FL

Thursday, 6/29/17 We got up with plans to leave by 8:30am. That was easy as Shannon had no coffee at the B&B, so we had to go out to find some. We decided not to return by the ‘fastest route’ which meant I-95 through Savannah and Jacksonville on the east coast. The alternate route was shorter, but would take about an hour longer due to the slower speed limit. It was a long, long ride day but the roads were pretty and we went through some cute towns. No stops along the way other than gas and bathroom breaks. We pulled into Old Town, Florida...

May 11, 2017 - Trip to New York and how it all Started

Diana turned me on to workaway.com and I found a place in New York where I can work on a resort ranch in return for room and board, meals, and horses for a few weeks. I plan to work out some side trips to visit family & friends in Michigan and snow birds (Cindi, Gary, and Sadie) in Ohio. Marty and I will be leaving St. Pete on Monday, May 22 and plan on staying through the month of June. https://www.workaway.info/9745689714b4-en.html Workaway Link R&R Dude Ranch 8940 Lange Road Otto, NY 14766 Recreation Ranch Site

Aug 22, 2016 - Athens

After a long flight, we made it to Athens. We walked around a lot and ended up at the Acropolis museum. We both felt dizzy and worn out. Went back to hotel and took a nap. The next morning we had coffee and croissant at Mikel's. We were at the Acropolis entrance at 8:00. It was a long way up. Very glad we went early. As we were leaving it got crowded.

Apr 24, 2016 - Triathlon!

Up at 5:30 so that I could be in St. Petersburg before 7 AM to join Gette in cheering for Rosemary as she competes in a major triathlon! She was at the start about an hour before her start time of 7:36 AM and anxious to start. She had to swim for a mile in open salt water, then bike for 25 miles around St. Petersburg, and then run for 6 miles on the streets near the bay! She completed all that in under 3 hours and was happy with her time. I was very impressed but then found out she did it in the same amount of time as a friend of hers that...

Mar 25, 2016 - In St. Petersburg

I have done several short little postings just to let you know we had moved on to different locations but they didn’t have any descriptions of the places we have been. Since we left Ft. Myers Beach on March 14, we spent two night in Pelican Bay at Cayo Costa and I wrote about that in the last posting. Then we moved a little south on the ICW to an anchorage at Useppa Island which gave us a short dinghy ride to Cabbage Key. All of our friends in Ft. Myers told us we needed to stop there. Along with J&B, we rode our dinghies across to Cabbage...

Feb 18, 2016 - ST. Petersburg, FL.

We took a drive to St. Petersburg via the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The 2nd exit off the bridge takes you to the islands along the coast. The first one is Mullet Key, which is the location of old Fort Desoto. If you have been following us on our trips you know that Larry likes old forts. Most of the old buildings are gone, but the layout is still there, as well as the Battery's. After the fort, we continued up the islands/keys. We have never seen that many hotels, motels and condos in a row with 3 restaurants for every one of...

Jan 15, 2016 - Day 1 Fri - Magic of the Mexican Highlands

I have been wanting to have a horseback riding vacation for several years. Originally the plan was to take a cross country riding trip in Ireland but never made it. When I met my Cozumel friend Desiree in Safety Harbor a couple years ago she shared the wonders of Rancho Las Cascada with me and it sounded wonderful. Flights to Mexico aren't near as expensive (or long) as to Ireland. Another bonus of Mexico is that I should be able to practice speaking spanish. So thanks to Paul Morgan and his bequeathment I am at an all inclusive ranch...

Jan 8, 2016 - Christmas Day On The Beach @ 85 Degrees

We're a little behind on our posts due to our work schedule and just being busy at holiday time like everyone else. We spent Christmas Eve & Christmas day at Nancy's brother's house. On Christmas day, Scott & Deb like to go to the beach. This time we journeyed down to Pass-a-Grille, which is the southern end of St. Pete Beach. There had been a heat wave the past 2 weeks and it was 85 degrees on the sand! The temperature in many of the cities in Central Florida broke records; we aren't sure if a record was broken here but it was hot! There...

Jun 22, 2015 - Preparations

So there are roughly 3 days left to takeoff and I'm almost ready to go. Packed my suitcase on Saturday in order to see how much room I would have left in my carry on. It looks like a lot, but I still need to add the liquid lotions, shampoo, toothpaste, and creams, my bible, a notepad for spanish class, and tennis shoes. Between now (Monday evening) and Thursday evening I need to find some gifts for my Antigua friends at the Calvary hacienda. I found some good ideas for what to get - fig newtons to name one - and some Florida momentos like...

Dec 5, 2014 - St. Petersburg, Florida to Navarre, Florida

Sunday, November 30, 2014 – Lakeland, FL to St. Petersburg, FL We spent the night at Cracker Barrel. Went to bed at the first sign of dark as we are pooped. We had such a good time with Ginny and her family. We just kept going but now we are taking it easy. Wonderful time spent with family. Had a nice breakfast this morning, Lowell and I split a big breakfast. We stopped for a magazine rack at Camping World and ended up with a “Tailgater” and a few other things. And no magazine rack. Then on to St. Petersburg to meet our friends, Stana and...
