Feb 14, 2019 - Tropical Point Park on Pine Island

I haven't been playing since the start of Winter Games! They took all our time all week, but then I had a job dogsitting 2 medium-sized dogs and got a big head cold that still lingers! Yesterday was rainy and today is sunny but cool, so off we went. Others went kayaking in the same general area in the afternoon. It was breezy to start but windy at the end! After battling the waves at the beginning of the trip, we turned into the channel with mangrove islands and was greeted with calm water and a flock of brown pelicans. A few were spooked...

Apr 19, 2018 - kayaking from Tropical Point

On the way to St. James City, is a road that leads to Tropical Point which a very small park with hardly any parking. Joan & Barb came along, but didn't stay with us. We were very surprised to find a wooden structure ahead and Sara Fleming deemed it a good lunch spot. Sarah Valentine was able to get her kayak in the spot, but Nancy & I had to go into the inlet to find a spot to dock. It was alongside a path on the other side of the boardwalk in St. Jame's Creek Preserve (didn't even know it was there!)! After a satisfying and restful...

Jan 30, 2013 - Tour of Franklin Lock Park

From WP Franklin Lock COE Park in Alva, FL ... Wednesday, January 30, 2013 We are still here enjoying our time at Franklin Lock Park in Alva. The January weather has been "summer like." Not that we are complaining, of course. But tomorrow it is supposed to cool off a bit to the mid 70s for a couple days. That suits me just fine. On Tuesday we drove to Pine Island for the afternoon. I did a little shopping in Cape Coral at Bealls. Tuesday is Senior Discount Day, and yes, that includes me. :) Then onto Pine Island where we had an incredible...

On the Road Again

Jan 24, 2013 - Pine Island Sound

It's Thursday, so it's time to kayak! Today, 9 of us went to Pine Island and went into the Sound between Pine Island and Cape Coral. It was open water most of the time, but the day was sunny, mild, and calm, so it wasn't so bad. Besides I have a new kayak that doesn't make me work so hard. We got a late start only because the morning started out quite cool. We got out on the water after 11 AM, so we had lunch early on at a small private beach. When we went into a lane of water, we saw a dolphin in front of us and marveled how it was there...

Jan 25, 2011 - Lunch on Pine Island

From WP Franklin COE Park, Alva, FL … Tuesday, January 25, 2011 It was warm when we got up around 8:00 this morning. How does 67 degrees sound? And although it was quite breezy all day, our temperatures got up to 80 today. We had some coffee outside on the patio and then took our two mile walk through the park. After breakfast, I took a shower and got cleaned up. Then we drove to Walgreen’s in Fort Myers where I finally got my flu shot. I kept putting it off, and Charlie kept insisting that I needed to get that done. So now I can check...

On the Road Again

Apr 9, 2010 - Exploring Pine Is./Ft. Myers, Fl.

Today we took a drive to both ends of the Island and did a little touring of Ft. Myers... It was a interesting day. We found that Ft. Myers was once Winter home to Henry Ford and there is a Museum here that holds many items that are historic in remembering the life and accomplishments of Thomas Edison. ( Edison & Ford Winter Estates ). We met with an Ex-Shipmate from the Iwo Jima (Chuck Hobus), after he drove down from the Tampa area for some conversation a couple of beers and some good local seafood @ "Woodys" Tiki Bar. We hadn't seen...

Apr 8, 2010 - Across Mississippi, Alabama and FINALLY into FLORIDA

After we left Baton Rouge and traveled across Mississippi, Alabama and FINALLY entered into the Florida Panhandle we crossed over into the Eastern Time Zone. We drove South on I-75 as far as Lake City, Florida, spent last nite at a VERY RUSTIC RV park (a grass pasture that wasn't even close to level, it had power and water {sign by the water warned that it needed to be BOILED before consumption})... we didn't hook up to the water.... just stayed the nite and hit the road this morning. Traveled South on I-75 to St. James City, Florida (about...

Feb 8, 2010 - Off to the Fort Meyers area - and Pine Island

SUNDAY, February 7 -- We loaded up this morning (including Aunt Jean), said our good-byes to Aunt Ann, and headed southwest. Our campground for the next three days is the 371 site Ft Meyers/Pine Island KOA. Nice place, plenty of room between sites and plenty of room in the neighborhood as much or the surrounding area is wildlife preserve. The three of us had a late lunch at Woody's Cafe & Grill -- complete with pre Super Bowl entertainment - two guys, two guitars and a harmonica. Back at the campground, Tom watched the football game while...

Jun 1, 2009 - Weekend in Pine Island

We spent the weekend in St. James City, FL visiting our close friends, Terri and Rob. We parked the RV in their driveway, under the palm trees. It was such a tight fit into the space that we had palm fronds caught in the RV door, making for a tropical look inside the RV! Not sure where the hours went as they sped by so quickly, but we had a blast. Seems like there was enough good food, drinks, shopping and pool sitting to satisfy everyone. We are hoping that everything will work out for Terri and Rob to visit us in Montana later this Summer.

Where's Mama ???

Mar 29, 2009 - Matlacha Island, FL

Matlacha is a small island just outside of Fort Myers, Florida. About 3 years ago, Art traveled all around the Fort Myers area, looking for a place where we might want to live when we retired. Lo and behold, he took a left out of Fort Myers and ran into Matlacha - one of the oldest fishing villages in Florida. We describe it as "funky". The majority of residents are artists, musicians and authors. Most love the water and fishing. In 2007, we bought a house on one of the canals, just a few blocks from the downtown area and currently rent the...

Where's Mama ???

Mar 20, 2009 - Pine Island, FL

We arrived in Pine Island today - 80 degrees, sunshine and beautiful. Pine Island is where we have a rental home in Matlacha, one of the last authentic Florida fishing places left in Florida. We are staying in the driveway of our dear friends, Terri and Rob James. Terri sold us the home in Matlacha and she and her husband Rob have become wonderful friends. We will be here until the end of March when we head for Cudjoe Island in the FL Keys. Next week we plan to become Florida residents - so strange after many, many years as North Carolina...

Where's Mama ???

Mar 11, 2009 - Pine Island

Even though only a narrow cut separates Pine Island and Sanibel Island, they seem to be worlds apart. Sanibel, with beautiful sandy beaches and lush vegetation, is a popular tourist destination; on the other hand, Pine Island is low-key with more permanent residents and fewer tourists. Because of its orientation, Pine Island has few beaches and is home to mostly serious fishermen. On Monday, Ted and Barbara went for an early morning bicycle ride to the southern tip of the island, St. James City. In the afternoon we drove to Bokeelia, at...
