Dec 19, 2017 - Florida is flat

Here I am in Florida! My first impression is wow, is this place flat!!! And the road from the Jacksonville airport to Saint Augustine is so straight...about an hour of straight, really straight driving—not a whole lot of anything for the road to have to go around, up or over! Lots of water! But not like our water. This is like swamps, right alongside the road. Holding ponds everywhere. I kept my eyes peeled, but no signs of any reptiles so far, except for an alligator farm billboard (I’ll be passing on that). I’m in the old part of St...

Oct 20, 2017 - Southern Hospitality

Nice quiet night. Except for the acorns dropping in the roof! We cooked some sausage and pancakes and headed off for Charleston. Well Monck Corner, close enough. My friend Judy and Sam are going to host us for a day. It is so great to have friends along the way. Their back yard is a nice pond with many turtles and huge carp all dodging the alligators. Judy feeds the turtles cat fish food. They hear her voice and all come swimming. The carp were put in many years ago to maintain the weeds and have grown to huge things. Not sure how many...

Our trip east.

Jul 16, 2017 - St Augustine

Up early and back over to Amelia Island for a cruise to Cumberland Island. We have plenty of time to have breakfast sitting on the verandah of one of those old wooden houses turned into a cafe. Even the coffee is good. We board the river boat at 10am and pass by Fort Clinch built in 1847 during the Civil War and was again used as a fort during in WW2. We then head towards Cumberland Island which is now mostly owned by the National Parks. However, in the 1860's Andrew and Lucy Carnegie owned 90% of the island and built a 59 room mansion...

The Americas

Jul 6, 2016 - St Augustine

A day filled with everything from a funky restaurant for breakfast to a fort in the oldest city in the U.S. to the Fountain of Youth....yes, really....but let's start from the beginning. We left our RV early to drive to St. Augustine, the oldest city that has been continually inhabited in the U.S. since 1565. Instead of our usual breakfast in the RV, Wayne said we should find a local funky restaurant (his description). Unfortunately, the drive along a 4 lane highway lined with gorgeous greenery and mowed lawns didn't produce funk until...

To Maine and back

May 19, 2016 - Lake Worth to St. Augustine

Woke to lovely sunshine this morning & took our time getting ready to roll - didn't want to hit the rush hour traffic. So it was about 9:20 when we got on the freeway & immediately ran into stop & go traffic. Ugh! The first hour was v e r y s l o w but after we passed the bottleneck it was great for the rest of the trip. We were impressed with how well-kept I-95 was. There was a lot of construction on the road - improvements - & the sides of the road are beautifully green. (Being from the West we're not used to green along the roads!) We...

Mar 9, 2016 - St. Augustine, FL.

Spent the day driving to the beach and then to Old Town St Augustine. We did not take pictures of the beach. You have probably seen more than you care to. Old Town however was a different story. We were here some 20 years ago. We loved it here before and still do. It is a lot more commercialized than it was. We spent some time touring the Fort again. The old homes and history is everywhere since St. Augustine is the oldest develop city in the U.S. It was a lot of fun to see it again. If we were ever to move to Florida, I believe somewhere...

Dec 25, 2015 - Day 47 - Merry Christmas from St Augustine

Merry Christmas We prepared our turkey on the BBQ, a turkey breast for me and 2 turkey thighs for Garry. It cooked faster than I expected so we had our supper early, about 4:30. After stuffing ourselves, we had a fire. Garry says to tell you it was romantic but I would say it was just too quiet, so we went inside to play cards. Our bus was not the only one decorated in the park. Some had quite elaborate displays with inflatables, lights and decorations.

Dec 24, 2015 - Day 46 - in St Augustine, Florida

Christmas Eve. During the afternoon we took a drive to check the beaches but was windy and high waves. We wanted to do something that was not possible to do on Christmas Eve at home, so we got stuff and had tacos for supper, then had a campfire then nachos while we played cards. I had a winning night for a change, my Christmas present he says.

Dec 21, 2015 - Day 43 - in St Augustine, Florida

Today we saw the new STAR WARS movie in the afternoon, more people than we usually see, but still not full. An excellent movie, a must see for Star Wars fans. We headed out as suggested to go on the tour of Christmas lights. The tours started at 6:00 pm so we were at the Old Trolley parking area at 5:30 and took a trolley over to starting point and got in the very, very long line about 5:50. Garry took a walk to see how long the line was and it was about three blocks long, winding around the square and starting over again where we were in...

Dec 20, 2015 - Day 42 - in St Augustine, Florida

It was nicer today, still a little cool, as you will see in the photos, long pants and long sleeved t-shirt. We headed out to do our tours of Old Town Jail and Museum, and Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth. The jail is painted a shade of pink and built in a style to match the homes of the day. It was in operation until the 1950's then turned into a tourist attraction. The tour guides are dressed as prisoner trustees and tell us what life was like for the prisoners of the day. The punishment cage outside was demonstrated with the children...
