Apr 29, 2014 - Last few days at Rainbow Springs

I attached a few photos of the beauty of Rainbow Springs. We will be breaking camp this week and leaving either Friday or saturday depending on the weather. We have met some good people while working here but its time to go. We are ready to see a new place and get out of the Florida heat and humidity. My birthday was last week and coincidentally we enjoyed a low country shrimp boil. Our new volunteer neighbors, Jeb and Jada cooked it up. I ate so much that I hurt myself. And of course, my sweetie, Karen had a cake for me. Nice surprise....

Apr 11, 2014 - Good week

Sunday, April 5th...finally got to shoot at a cowboy action match at Hernando Sportsmans Club, south of Homosassa. Very nice range. With several ranges designated for different shooting disicplines. The cowboy action range has 6 shooting bays with western town fascades. I shot pretty well considering I had not shot a match for 8 months. As they say, its a perishable skill. Wednesday we drove to Cedar Key to visit our friend, Nancy Heuman, that we worked with at Highlands Hammock. We toured a clam farm called Southern Cross. They raise...

Apr 4, 2014 - Enjoying the spring

Thursday I decided it was time to take a dip in the spring. It is 72 degrees, year round. But I didnt want to get in until the air temp was higher than the water temp. It was cold. It was a shock for the first three minutes. I swam out to the edge of the swim area to warm up and got used to the water temp. It is quite "refreshing", of course. But the swim area is 15ft deep and I was quite ready to get out of the water after swimming out about 200 yds and back to shore. Karen says that I should do it every day. Yeah, right! She did not get...

Apr 1, 2014 - Surprise visit from the Arnolds and Mitchells.

Its been about a week since our wifi provider shut us off because we went over our monthly data cap of 20G. Glad to have it back. We dont miss cable TV near as much as we missed having our wifi. So we are back on line and being careful to avoid going over the cap again. I still cant see how we used 32G last month in three weeks. I did notice that there were two unknown devices connected to our Jetpack. I think someone hacked our hotspot. Anyway I have now block them and hidden our Hotspot connection and changed the password....

Mar 22, 2014 - We have visited 6 Florida State Parks

We have visited six Florida parks as of today. Highlands Hammock, Myakka River, Homosassa Springs, Crystal River, Rainbow Springs and O'Leno since November, when we started. A few weeks ago, we traveled to Homosassa Springs. It is a refuge for animals that cannot live in the wild on their own. Some have been injured and are being rehabed. Some have been domesticated and do not have the skills to survive on their own. Some are eventually released. Some have become permanent residents. There were Manatees, a Red Wolf, a grey fox, a red fox, a...

Mar 1, 2014 - Rainbow Springs State Park

We arrived yesterday after a long drive up I-75. Construction and heavy traffic made it longer than it should have been. But we got in, set up camp, met our new boss. We meet with a ranger tomorrow for four days of training and orientation. Most of our work will be in the headsprings area shown in the photo. We also met the other volunteers staying in the volunteer village at a community campfire. Nice people. This is gonna be a beautiful place to volunteer.

Sep 21, 2012 - You Can Smell Our Butts For Miles!

9/21/12.  Friday.    You Can Smell Our Butts For Miles! A leisurely start this morning about 10:30 am took us on a truck hike to Brasstown Bald- the tallest mountain in Georgia at over 4,000 ft.  As Kenny pulled into the parking area,at once we were presented with a conundrum;  there was a hiking path of 0.6 mile up to the observation tower or a shuttle van that would take us up for $3.00 per head.   All four heads opted for the van especially since Jenny and Kenny, the power rowers the day before, we're aching.  Thank goodness for that, I...

Sep 20, 2012 - Stop Taking Pictures!

9/20/12. Thursday.    Stop Taking Pictures! The brave rafters awoke this morning at 5:00am to get ready for their big trip down the Chatooga River ( parts of the movie Deliverance was filmed here).  Anita was decked out in her Columbia outdoor ware and Jenny and Kenny had donned their river proof outfits.  Bill, on the other hand, after making breakfast for Anita Donned his casual camp ware in preparation of a day of reading and movie watching.  The three rafters had to be at the outfitters office by 7: 30 and that means they had to leave...

Sep 18, 2012 - Where's My Table?

9/18/12.  Where's My Table? It rained all night and when we awoke this morning it was still coming down pretty hard.  Since our milk was frozen solid, Anita made us toast and hot tea for breakfast.  We we waded our way over to Jenny and Kenny's camper around 10:00am and found them buried face down in the banana nut bread they purchased at the German bakery yesterday.  It seems their camper has a leak in the roof and is dripping water onto the floor near the bathroom.  I think they are going to tough it out until they get home.  Kenny asked...

Sep 17, 2012 - What's Up Clyde?

9/17/12.   What's Up Clyde? Tired after our long day of driving,  the Crackers opted for a leisurely day of exploring our surroundings and just taking it easy.  We set out around 11:00am and drove down the road a ways when the Lady Crackers saw a produce stand and demanded that Kenny pull in.  Anita and Jenny purchased some freshly made cheddar cheese, a few Georgia apples, tomatoes and an apple pie turnover.  Man, that cheese was good- nice and soft with a just a hint of sharpness.  We all piled into Kenny's truck and hit the winding road...

Sep 16, 2012 - Did Komatose Kenny Eat A $108 Lunch?

9/15/12 Sunday. Did Komatose Kenny Eat A $108 Lunch? The Cracker's trip to Vogel State Park in the Peach State began with much enthusiasm and anticipation as they headed out. Komatose Kenny and Type "A" Jenny (TAJ)decided to take I-75 while Backroad Billy and the Navigator elected to travel the scenic HWY 441 to avoid Atlanta at all costs. The Navigator got a call from TAJ telling her that Komatose Kenny had decided to take 441 after all. The Navigator told her that we're exiting I-75 in Lake City to hook up with 441. We determined that...

Sep 15, 2012 - Seal Herding Chickens!?

9/15/12. Saturday. A Seal Herding Chickens? A beautiful Saturday morning found the full naval cadre planning their next river excursion. Anita now has an inflatable boat to cruise the river not unlike Cleopatra sailing her barge down the Nile. BT, Amber and the Memmoli Tykes plus Abby (Jay Bird's friend) had their assault ships ready to battle the river's unpredictable hazards. Soon after launch it became obvious to Seal Team 0 (BT) that he had an impossible mission: He must keep all ships in formation. This was proving almost superhuman as...
