Jun 10, 2011 - Another Trip to Defuniak Springs

David and Susie left this afternoon for Birmingham after their son Zeb called to tell them that his wife Christy was in a maternity unit and MDs had told them that their baby boy would probably be born this week end. He will be several weeks early. They are well educated on the situation and in the very best of hands and we are hopeful for positive results. Son Sam drove in from Gainesville to join them as well. We drove back to Defuniak Springs today and obtained a handicap parking permit for our car. Then we found a little hole in the...

Jun 9, 2011 - Regrets

Yesterday when JoAnn was letting Fillmore outside on his leash, he took off after one of the yard cats and squished her hand severely in it. She was hurting pretty badly for a while, but we drug out our Nikken Palm Mag (a magnet spun by a little electric motor) and alternated ice and the machine on her hand. She was fine a a short time. It is still horribly hot here in the Florida Panhandle and we are in a drought. One expects a rain squall late in the afternoon in this area but they haven't been coming around so we pretty much just sit...

Jun 6, 2011 - Cabin Fever and Some Musings

Today we got to get out of the trailer, whoopee. We saw cars and woods and trees, oh boy. We rode all the way into Defuniak Springs and ate lunch. Hooray. More reading stuff at the library. Ahh Haa, We went to Wally World. Ahh Gee. Doug ran into an end cap with an electric scooter. Ooh. Ooh. We drove to Alabama for JoAnn's car to get. Oh cabin fever, hot as you is, you haven't got us yet. Years ago Doug in high school became acquainted with a poem by T S Eliot called The Love-Song of J Alfred Prufrock. Periodically since then he has...

Jun 5, 2011 - Heat Wave

The heat index has been over a hundred here for the last week and we are laying pretty low. Fillmore only makes "necessary" trips outdoors and Doug doesn't go out at all if he can help it. JoAnn runs back and forth to the big house to do laundry and cook, play the piano, sort through family treasures etc. We don't have satellite TV out in the rig, so we have both read at least a book a day. And yes, we've had bouts of cabin fever. JoAnn's little car is somewhere in Lower Alabama out in the country getting a going over by a local mechanic...

Jun 1, 2011 - Acceptance

Over the years Doug has come to learn to unlearn most of what he learned in his formal education as well as in his social and coping mechanisms. Rules, concepts and practices have changed over the years. Divorce is acceptable where it once wasn't . Women don't have to wear white gloves outside in the summer and so on. He was taught as nausem to use the scientific principle to think and reason with; that intuition and gut feeling was just not acceptable in life planning. Some twenty plus years ago when he was driven to his knees in terror...

May 31, 2011 - Oncologist Apppointment

We drove into Lynn Haven early this afternoon for a scheduled visit with the oncologist. We were a little put off by his attitude when he found out we were signed up under Hospice and even though his body language turned off, he was able to answer our most of our questions. We wanted to know if there was another round of chemo that could be used, and if so, what could we expect of it. The answer is yes, an older chemo that isn't used much any more and no specific answer to its side effects. He understood that we are looking for quality of...

May 29, 2011 - More Revelations

And the beat goes on. We got a call this morning from Susanne that further continued our Revelation Days visit just ended. She was asking more questions about Doug's feelings and events long past and revealed that she had spent some time on the phone with her mother and her brother on the same topics. We have been able to talk freely if not emotionally because we are not ignoring the elephant in the living room. Hopefully our long dissolved family can find some healing and much needed peace!! Of course the subject of God arose. Doug...

May 28, 2011 - Susanne's Visit

We just finished a delightful two and and half day visit with Doug's daughter Susanne. She is leaving next week for a month IN Portugal and was able to fly down from Raleigh for a quick visit. She arrived late Wednesday night after missing a flight in Atlanta but obliged to drive us home afterwards. She was amazed to drive for a hour and a half out in the country without seeing any oncoming traffic. She finally understood that we really meant we were out in the middle of nowhere. Sus is an athlete and arose early for a mile or so run out in...

May 25, 2011 - Profundities and Observerties

Doug has always wanted a forum to share his obsertities and profundities and hence from time to time he will do such in this blog. Hospice continues to make periodic visits and pain management is being effective. We continue on moderating and changing dosage in order to allow for a clearer mind. David and Susie are off on a camping trip until the weekend and we will drive to PC this evening to pick up Susanne at the airport. She just called and said she might have a bad connection out of Raleigh to Atlanta. If so we will have a wait in...

May 22, 2011 - Baby Shower Weekend

Yellow fly time in the Florida Panhandle. Any one not knowing of yellowflies is indeed fortunate. They are big yellow assertive territorial critter about the size of a horsefly who hatch at this time of year and visciously attack anything around them. Once bitten the victim suffers severe swelling and a long agonizing itch. Sprays and bug bombs are like salad dressing to them. The best weapons seem to be saw-off shot guns at close range. Its yellow fly time in the panhandle. One day last week we drove out to 2 Cousins, a local unadvertised...

May 17, 2011 - Fillmore's Big Day Out

Over the weekend, the new meds that Doug is on kicked in and he responded quickly and positively to them. Monday however was a different story; he was pretty miserable. Come to find out the clear plastic pain patch he had on his arm had disappeared and he was not being automatically dosed anymore. Shortly after putting on another patch, he started to revive and had a good day today. Hospice is still dickering with dosages and so this is still a work in progress but improving. JoAnn took Fillmore to the vet in Defuniak Springs this afternoon...

May 15, 2011 - JoAnn's Travels to PC

Saturday morning we received our first routine visit from the Hospice nurse and she made a list of things that we needed or may want. Our permanent nurse will check in Monday with some new meds and hopefully items from that wish list. After she left JoAnn and Susie washed the year plus grime off her little Honda and JoAnn drove herself into Panama City for an afternoon of retail therapy. She had a grand time being by herself and reveling in the change of environment and atmosphere. Doug and Fillmore remained in the rig under Susie's...
