Feb 17, 2019 - another view

Last week we spent a delightful three days camped at Jetty Park watching the cruise ships sail by in Port Canaveral. Nearby we investigated the Port Canaveral lock and saw that you could take a boat tour that came through the lock and sailed into the harbor amidst the cruise ships. It looked like fun and on a hot, winter day we boarded the Blue Dolphin on Merritt Island and took the trip. Geography is a bit tricky here. You feel like you are on the ocean, even when you're not. Our sail began on the Banana River, which is not a river at all,...

Feb 6, 2019 - Jetty Park

Whenever we are on a cruise, the sails in and out of ports are especially thrilling. Often locals gather to watch and wave. And we watch and wave right back. When we sailed into Port Canaveral last fall, we looked down on a campground from our balcony. We've known about Jetty Park and tried to get a site here a number of times over the years to no avail. The campground is not large and sitting on your lawn chair watching the cruise ships sail in and out appeals to many. In the past we looked for site vacancies where we could get water and...

Nov 8, 2018 - so near and yet so far

Originally this cruise was scheduled to head right to Miami. Now we are docked about 45 minutes drive away from where our motor home has been waiting for us in Titusville. We considered just getting off here, but RCL makes you pay extra to get off the cruise a day early; they really don’t want you to do that. RCL has just opened a new cruise port in Miami and they have opening day jitters. With a ship this size a little glitch can cause passengers to miss their flights home. Therefore, we went through immigration here, which will make...

This journal will document the trip Shirley and I are taking. We are embarking from Port Canaveral on the Norwegian Epic on April 7, 2018. We sail 15 days to Barcelona Spain. At that time we will stay on the ship for a B2B (back-to-back) 7 day Mediterranean cruise. I'm setting this up to allow friends and family to follow our journey and communicate with us while we are gone. I'll be able to add photos when we have wifi.

Apr 23, 2017 - Mickey Mouse

Finally Disney Day arrives. We are to leave the QV at 8.30 on a coach to Disney World. We board the coach which we are told will take around 90 minutes to get there. The traffic flows well until we get to Disney where everyone in America has decided this is the day to visit Disney so as Ian said we joined Gridlock World! We had pre purchased our tickets as recommended by our concierge to save time. The instructions say we need to collect them from a different area and will need to get a taxi when we are dropped off. Our guide on the coach...

Jan 15, 2017 - Space Centre

We set off for our next Port. We found out just before left that our itinerary had been changed and instead of having 2 days in Fort Lauderdale we were to have one and we would moor at Port Canaveral first. We were told this was due to immigration issues. We were pleased because we could now visit the space centre. The weather has been gorgeous and the sea really smooth. The temperature is 26 degrees and the sea is a warm 25 degrees! Lots of sunbathing and relaxing in the sun. Sorry to all you people back home in the snow and rain! Port...

Jan 13, 2017 - what to preserve

We took a tour of the lighthouse of the Cape Canaveral today. At least that's what we thought we were doing. We ended up doing that and much more. It used to be easy to visit the lighthouse. You drove out there and there it was. Now because it is located inside the naval air station and the world has become such a dangerous place, you have to submit your ID info a few days prior to your visit so that some bureaucrat can verify that you are not a terrorist and you are allowed to enter the base. Generally, you think about a lighthouse as a...

Nov 12, 2016 - Homeward Bound, almost there

Our last days at sea found us trying to do any thing on the ship we hadn't yet managed to do, trying different drinks (Mike actually does like Mojitos, just not the ones in Cuba), seeing shows we had missed, eating at restaurants we hadn't been to, and even bowling at sea. That was interesting, once in a while the boat moved, of course in the middle of a shot. At least we could blame the ship movement for our scores! Every night we had a different towel sculpture on the bed, we always looked forward to coming back to the cabin in the...

Portugal Cruise

Oct 11, 2015 - Sunday Port Canaveral

This is the big day, we set sail today for our family cruise. Chip got up this morning and attended on of the local Lutheran Church’s while the rest of us sinners stayed back at the motorhome to get around. The girls hit the bathhouse here in the campground while Candy and I watched the fishermen launch their boats at the beautiful boat launch next to the campground. We saw guys with kayak’s go out and probably some of the biggest boats that can be pulled with a pickup put in. They were lined up waiting to get to the ramps, there were 6...

2015 Family Cruise

Oct 10, 2015 - Saturday Port Canaveral

Something I didn’t think about was getting all 6 of us into the truck to go anywhere, oops. So Chip and I went down to the local car rental place and got a car for one day so we all could get around. After that we loaded everyone up and head for Christmas Florida. We were going to the Airboat ride at Midway for an hour trip into the marsh area. This place was way out in the marsh land and they had all kinds of animals in the building you checked in at. Had Pork Chop the pig laying around, he never did move, just grunted at people. They had...

2015 Family Cruise

Oct 9, 2015 - Friday Port Canaveral

It is always a great day when you wake up for one, but to look out the window and see the sun shining. Here we are parked in the Jetty Park and Campground located in the Port Canaveral complex. This is interesting because the Port owns and operates all the businesses here including the campground. They also have a picnic area on the channel a person can get a day pass to picnic, fish, or watch the ships go in and out the channel. Our day started out with us going to the park, which is right behind where we are parked. We walked down to...

2015 Family Cruise

Oct 8, 2015 - Thursday Port Canaveral

We did get an early start at 8:30 am for the final leg of this journey. We will be in Jetty Park Cape Canaveral this afternoon. It is another great day for a drive, sun is shining, which we sure can tell driving east into it. I heard this morning that I-95 is open the entire way now. That is good because we may take that route home, maybe. Our trip was very uneventful to Port Canaveral. We did take the direct route thru Jacksonville which was probably the best way. It was a good run, even with the construction, didn’t need to slow down. We...
